  1. I don't see what Arroyo would provide except an awkward and unbalanced leg kick. He's basically a #5 starter and the Cubs have that with Rusch, Williams, and a potential decline from Maddux. I get the sense that Hendry doesn't believe Rusch or Williams could give him 180 IP with 32 starts. Arroyo probably could. I've never understood this concept, you're (not you Hoops) worried about the durability of a starter making 30+ starts and have a manager who puts his pitchers thru an increased workload. It's as if he would be looking for the most rubber-armed pitcher to compromise or to mend original flawed logic w/more flawed logic. You want to increase the chances of having your starters make 30 starts? Monitor their fatigue better, skip a start if the fatigue seems to be carrying over from the previous start. Improve their pre-hab, look for improvements in their diet as well as their recovery time and off-season workout programs. But, overspending for mediocrity simply for durability would makes no sense. FTR, Rusch avg'd 193 innings for 3 starights years between '00 and '02 I believe and Williams had 188IP in '03 as well as 177.2 IP in 20 starts and 2 appear. out of the pen last year.
  2. I've never been a big fan of Maroth and Robertson, Detroit would get the big advantage in the that one, especially with Bedard included.

  4. Lee, he's the better hitter. Clutch hitting is just that, hitting in an important situation, if you produce in that situation, it was a clutch hit. The GS by Konerko in the WS as well as the HR by Pujols in the NLCS were 2 clutch hits that had determined the outcome of that game and in the case of Konerko, the season. It just happens that both are very good hitters (Pujols is elite) at any given offensive situation.
  5. If Balt. could get Guillen, Bonderman, and a prospect for Tejada, they'd have to do the deal. They improve the team and save money at the same time. I can't imagine Detroit trading Bonderman, though. Hendry's Socrates is smarter than that.
  6. Luckily, there are now rumored to be 6 teams in the mix interested in Tejada. Detroit being the latest (which makes no sense at all) which gives Baltimore the luxury of being patient, something the Cubs appear to be running out of. At the Cubs conventions... Have the GM/audience sessions been anything more than typical fluff sessions?
  7. Sure, as a Cubs' fans I would love that deal, anything not including Prior or Z would work as far as acq'g Miggy. As an O's fan, those better be some damn good prospects, b/c they're getting fleeced. Defensively, Lopez is a downgrade compared to Barrett. Similar to Walker, Barrett might not have as much value around MLB as I would hope.
  8. Each off-season, they proven to be able to only do a couple of upgrades per off-season. This year, they've upgraded the bullpen & CF/Leadoff (I excluded Jones). If C is the area they need to upgrade most, then, they have a great team. I have no problem with them putting off improving the C position while trying to address more important areas of need.
  9. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06005/632897.stm Of course, Littlefield is giving GM speak for trying to build up his value by stating they're not looking to trade him, despite a team with a minimal payroll having a potential 4 million dollar player on the bench except against LH'ers. If he stays in Pitt. he'll be an expensive insurance policy, if Duffy fails in CF.
  10. It couldn't have been too effective, it certainly wasn't a case of them being able to steal a sign and react accordingly during all of those cases. IIRC, most were likely 1st pitch of the AB situations or possibly the pitcher was ahead 0-2, 1-2 in the count and Baker could have assumed the runner was going on an expected breaking ball.
  11. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/not-so-sweet-surrender/ Bottom 5 teams that were least successful at successful sacrifices...
  12. If forced to pick, I'd rather keep Deng as well, and I think he's a better player than Ben right now. But I'd rather keep both of them and I hope both remain in the Bulls' long term plans. Like Morrison, I don't think either one is particularly suited to play the 2 in the NBA, which is why I hope the Bulls draft Ronnie Brewer with their likely high lottery pick. Brewer is almost as big as Morrison, he's much quicker, and he has the handle to play some point. Adding a 6-7 player at the 1 would make it much easier for the Bulls to play Gordon or Hinrich at the 2. I think both Gay and Morrison are solid talents, but neither one is head and shoulders better than the other top five talents in this draft, and I don't see small forward as a need for the Bulls with Deng and Noch on the roster. I'd like to see more of a shooter out of the 2 than Brewer, this team needs someone to extend the defense for Deng to slash and post up as well as the much needed inside presence. Earlier I mentioned Davis as the best C prospect in the draft, there's O'Bryant out of Bradley I forgot to mention.
  13. I should add that he values the ability of drawing walks. Just that I would classify it as "hitters that are selective". You can be selective and instead of letting a 3-1 pitch go by, that hitters swings at a pitch that he should be swinging at (get me over FB). It might not show up in the stat sheet as a BB or even a P/AB, but rather as a selective AB thru subjective scouting. Of course, Bonds is the most selective hitter in the game as well as the most aggressive at the same time.
  14. He does, not as much as some (including myself) would like. I think he values it more through a batter's ability/tools to get a hit rather than to draw a walk.
  15. Orlando Hernandez? That's one of the very few, never said it didn't exist, just that the you'll have to search to find them.
  16. Sure, but they were dominant in the regular season. Gibson dominated the Tigers in '68 and the Sox in '67, but he was an amazing pitcher in almost any situation. It is very rare to find a player who was avg. during his career during the season and then be significantly better in the post-season/WS, especially as the sample grows larger. The same traits that made Gibson, Ford, and Koufax great post-season pitchers are the same traits that made them great reg. season pitchers. But... Gibson, Ford, and Koufax had great mental makeups.
  17. He could be the ultimate situational pitcher; Furcal is on 1B, late in a close ballgame and have Mulholland keep him from running. Just have to worry about the AB. :)
  18. Exactly, I can watch Telemundo all day (espec. on weekends) and not learn Spanish, simply b/c I don't know what to look for. You don't learn about proper pitching mechanics, hitting mechanics, defensive positioning by watching TV. Can't find it in a baseball Prospectus Handbook either. Quick example... If you're on 1B and a RH'ed pitcher is on the mound, there are 8 ways to try and tell if the pitcher is going to home or 1B and 10 ways to tell if a LH'er is going to home or 1B. TV doesn't teach you that, TV teaches that a runner has a small to large lead and whether it's an ideal count to run on.
  19. They sacrificed offense for defense with picking Walker over Grudz. You can flip a coin and get the same scenario as far as heads or tails as which will have the better overall year. I'd prefer Walker, but they're both role players. Walker took a nose defensively in a similar manner as to why Boston didn't bring him back aftre '03 and Grudzielanek took a nose dive offensively last year compared to '03 and '04.
  20. I think he's a better fit as a 3 as well, but if he's the BPA and the Bulls are on the clock. I hope the draft him and then it becomes an issure between Deng/Gordon, and I'd rather have Deng over Gordon in the long-term. Gordon is a better player now, but I don't think he's going to get much better than where he's at. Deng willl improve over the duration of his career.
  21. Sure, unless he spends his spare time as Stretch Armstrong. Knees don't that bend that way and Walker was not out of position when he rec'd the feed at 2B. Plus, I vividly remember Grudzielanek having two injury plagued seasons with the Cubs in similar flukish type manners. Doesn't equate to the fact he's injury prone or what not, just bad luck that can reverse as Mark was healthy last year.
  22. Clutch is something that is there, players have had the ability to play better in those situations than regular situations. I don't why it exists, I know it does, though. I wouldn't base much off of it, though. If I was looking at a player and clutch was mentioned in a positive or negative manner, I'd file it under part of his mental make-up (baseball maturity).
  23. I think Morrison can play the 2G, of course, he'll struggle with the shorter quicker guards, but he's a much better team defender than a 1 on 1 guy. If Rudy Gay is out there and the Bulls are drafting, they should draft him. He's the best out there. If you're looking for the best C, you're looking at Davis from MSU. :x
  24. If you want to compare him to Dubois than Kelton, you're better off. He's better defensively but not great at all in the OF, not as much raw power as Dubois and struggles to hit off-speed pitches. I have no problem with the signing, it's not blocking anyone and they need a RH bat off the bench w/pop. He's a project on a team that has shown a lack of patience.
  25. Not really a stat, but a scouting report from 7/30/58 on Satchel Paige when he was pitching in AAA. A pitcher that they assume is older than the age that is listed which is already at 50yo., avg. curve and change, plus slider, and great control at that age is truly amazing.
