  1. Don't ask why I quoted you, b/c I didn't intend to. Don't insult the horny wagon.

  4. Btw, the Cubs won't sign Rivera. He was a token draftee as the Cubs didn't have a kid from the area selected. But, I did get my 1st draftee signed and has reported to TB. :D
  5. When Soto gets to the majors, I think he'll be a blend of both. He won't hit as good as Barrett has in the past but will hit better than Blanco and won't be as good defensively or as take charge as Blanco but will outplay Barrett defensively. Of course, he isn't an option right now which he should be.
  6. Look at the year Rick Helling won 20+ for Texas. (edit: my mind is shot, he wasn't bad at all).
  7. Agreed, any more effort would likely pop it espec. on the breaker but it would fun to see how hard he throws at max effort.
  8. He's prob. been pitching thru pain for quite some time, there's been that drop in velo for awhile w/out any DL time. Depending on the severity, he might be in line for a poor man's version of Livan Hernandez.
  9. For novelty purposes, I've always been curious as to what kind of velo Verlander could get if he pitched out of the pen. If he's pacing himself and hitting 96-99 as a starter, imagine him letting it go for an inning while fresh. I seriously think he could sit at just under 100 and top at 103 consistently.
  10. Agreed, I can't see other MLB owners wanting an owner like Cuban, I doubt it would be passed as well.
  11. His meltdowns are definitely part of the problem, if it takes catering to prevent it by going with the C less likely to add fuel to that fire, so be it. I think the team losing like it has combined with playing for a contract and Barrett playing worse defensively has made it worse. While Barrett has played poorly, most of it lies with Zambrano.
  12. There is probably a slight effect, but the fact that when you analyze the data there's almost no strand of validity to the argument that certain catchers get more out of their pitchers than other catchers. Like I said, there is probably an effect, but the magnitude of this effect is worthless. I do agree that giving a catcher an off day one time through the rotation is a good idea, especially during the summer when the Cubs play a lot of day games. Zambranos our best bat from the mound so it makes sense to have a personal catcher for him, even more so when factoring in the recent altercations between Z and Barrett. But still, MB's lack of success with Big Z this season is pretty meaningless IMO. While this more of a negative towards Z than Barrett in this example, but Zambrano's fragile state of mind isn't helped by a catcher with an unusually high # of defensive lapses so far this year. While I'm not a big fan of trying to conclude anything from CERA & it doesn't need to be applied here to add validity to keeping Barrett from catching Zambrano, it just makes sense to keep Blanco (who is more take charge) with someone like Zambrano every 5th day.
  13. Too much depends on the pitchers and which pitchers you catch. When Perez was catching Maddux in ATL, he prob. led baseball in CERA. Not b/c he was great at calling games, but b/c he was Maddux's personal C and sat for Javy Lopez the other 4 games. There's something as far as a C's ability to call games, some Cs have a better idea on what is working and what isn't for the P as well as having a better feel for the batter. Given what has happened, I see nothing wrong Blanco/Hill getting a start every 5th day, give Barrett some rest and appears to be helping Z out working w/someone not named Barrett. When I pitched (although only HS) I knew I usually had a bad C behind the plate and didn't like the pitch selection from the coach, I was just too dumb or stubborn to really care.
  14. This my fav. Punjabi MC song. http://youtube.com/watch?v=bSp5Ivmbwmw
  15. Sure, if he wasn't a C on the wrong side of 30 who has prob. allowed his defensive struggles and everything else to impact him at the plate.
  16. Hard for me to say b/c I hadn't seen anyone like I had of Bowden in '05, but for the more part the Cubs, Yankees (depending on Brackman), and Boston did not go after overslotted players. Yanks did nab Carpenter and Peavey in the middle of the draft. Even by overslotting standards, the 18th-24th rounds (or whichever rd. Peavey was drafted) makes it much less likely to sign compared to the 1st 10. In most cases, the 16th rd. (typically where more teams cut off their marginal picks) is where you'll see the end of the signable overslots. Most cases, that is before the 15th rd.

  18. '04 had a better offense, but '03 had the starters healthy and better bullpen. Despite 1 fewer win and a worse pythag. record than '04, I'd go with '03. Espec. after they got Ramirez and Lofton. No Cubs teams have been as good as the August-October Cubs team of '03.
  19. I'd add 5) More power. :) Although, I didn't include it in the list.
  20. Minus avg. Barrett's numbers dominate this month over DeRosa. Given the small sample of it compared to 2 months, I'd still trust DeRosa higher up in the order compared to Barrett.
  21. But, you can't ignore the possibility of having a good defensive OF'er next to a great defensive OF'er at a minimal price. He's not going to be much better than Murton at the plate (probably better avg. better power and worse approach/OBP) but he'll a chance to play over someone like Murton b/c of a few things, whether or not they are very valid depends on the person. 1)Better defense 2)LH'ed 3)More speed 4)1st rd. pick of the Cubs Of course, that assumes he has progressed to the point where he belongs on the 25 man roster.

  23. Derosa has been hitting better of late and better throughout the year compared to Barrett. I don't expect Jones to get the bulk of time when Floyd comes back and then it becomes a matter of how much contract to eat to unload him. At this point of the year, Barrett has to prove that he can hit better to be moved up (although, that can be said of Floyd/Murton/Jones as well so Iwouldn't have a problem if they got dropped). I like Theriot in the 7th spot b/c he does get on base at a good clip, with Derosa showing a good eye, he can get move a runner, and he can steal. The reason why I like someone who can get on and steal a base is (I'd want Theriot to be more aggressive on the bases hitting 7th) if he can get to 2nd, that 8th hitter will be walked or pitched around more and the quicker they get to the pitcher, the quicker they get to the top of the order and Soriano/heart of the order. (apologies for the run-on)
  24. Going by expected line-ups. Soriano Pie Lee Ramirez Floyd/Murton Derosa Theriot Barrett/Blanco SP
