  1. Wuertz??? I'd use him along with Marmol in the 7th. Definitely think Gallagher should be back at AAA. I can't believe I forgot about Wuertz, I'd def. put him ahead of Eyre as well if it's close and there's between the two.
  2. Let the usage play itself out and if the bullpen is taxed, see who can go and who can't. As far as assuming everyone in the pen is rested, this is how I'd assemble the pen. Dempster-Closer Howry-Set-up (been the best as of late) Marmol (7th) Eyre-situational Ohman-situational/early relief Gallagher-long relief (best suited starting at AAA though)
  3. I loved Sosa in his early to mid 20s right when he started getting into the 30/30 club. Sure, he'd have as many BBs and steals but he was amazing to watch despite being so raw.
  4. If I was to guess what to expect from Soto the remainder of the year offensively... .255/.325/.375 would be fair and cautious for a rookie who may taken the next step as a hitter.
  5. If I was a team that needed an LH'ed hitting OF'er and knew that Jones was avail. and the Cubs were willing to eat a % of that contract and doubtful much would be needed in return, I'd be interested.
  6. That Al Reyes has been a bust w/the Rays.
  7. Congrats to Sosa, he has done more good than harm for the Cubs during his tenure.
  8. W/out having seen him, I'm still optimistic that long-term he'll be better than what he has shown over his 1st year of pro-ball. Bowen is a better back-up C than Hill, prob. will be DFA'd after the year and becomes the one year rental at C. This trade all depends on Soto for me and whether or not he gets a shot everyday.
  9. I am. Good. The Cubs are worse today. Barrett to Bowen is a big drop off. The Cubs are worse tomorrow. Two picks in the top 75 picks next year > Burke. It's not a hard thing to see. Barrett to Bowen, I agree. I'd rather see Soto over Barrett, Bowen, Hill, and Blanco. I'm not sure they'll call him up which they should but that's a separate issue. I don't see a team signing him before 12/1 and the Cubs likely would not offer arbitration given how this season has progressed so far.
  10. Hrm, it's working on Premium. Haha. PingHitter in there hanging out by himself. That's the best talks I have all day.
  11. I'm no draft expert, but I don't understand that at all. It seems to me that a team would want to go with BPA AND need. To me that was clearly Weiters. Now if the Cubs have concerns that he won't stick at catcher, I could see drafting someone else. I just seems that a team would want to at least think about the mid term future of their ball club when drafting. It'd be great if they worked together, but if the Cubs feel that Vitters is the BPA, the player they liked the most from the start, followed the most during his HS season, etc. should they pass that to the side b/c of a need on the 25 man roster? Btw, when Vitters gets to the majors the Cubs might be looking to trade Ramirez. You're playing the "what if" as far as trying to project what the roster will look 2-3 years down the road. Who's to say that Soto won't an everyday C and Ramirez is playing more like a 1B at 3B b/c of a career of leg injuries who can't stay healthy? Their biggest need is getting the best talent at any position.
  12. B/c Blanco is very close to being shut down for the year, cortisone shots have not lessened the pain and Hill is just a stop-gap option while Soto got healthy. I can't see the Cubs going the rest of the way with Hill/Bowen. Bowen will likely be safety net for Soto if he struggles and it is wise to have Bowen there compared to someone like Hill.
  13. It's either one but no team would sign him before 12/1. Plus, he'd be dumb not to except, unless you're assuming he changes how he has played so far this year and there's an expected demand for him. One more year of Barrett equals one more year of a likely declining C both defensively and offensively (from the '06 Barrett) and gives Soto his 3rd year at Iowa. I'm all for Soto, this hopefully cleared the way.
  14. I don't know if I would call myself indifferent, but I'm not really upset. I wish they would have drafted Weiters if they were going to deal Barrett. That's my gripe. Truffle, I'm just trying to look at Burke and see what the Cubs got. Frankly, I don't see the ceiling being all that high. He is young though. I'm definately not worked up about it. I'd have a huge problem if they drafted Weiters based on what they would w/Barrett, apples and oranges as far as drafting a player based on what is done on the 25 man roster. Burke probably has a very high ceiling, that of a very good ML regluar/All-star, he wouldn't be drafted in the top 40 if he didn't. At this point, questions have to arise if he could translate those tools into production which he hasn't and the further along he goes, the less likely that'll be.
  15. It shows his athletic ability, organizations use the SPARQ tests in baseball. Vertical leap is one aspect of it. It's just another tool of many to grade a prospect on. http://www.crossoveracademy.net/sparq.htm I'm still holding out for his Wonderlic tests to come back before I make any judgement on him ;-). They have mental evaluations as well as in-depth vision tests.

  17. I think that would be best for him as well.
  18. I should vote for Davhern just b/c I get tired of having the same opinion on every subject. group think? clique.

  20. Yet, they'll still compete in the NL Central unless something dramatic happens with the other 5 teams.
  21. If a player was drafted that high and signed for that amount, he's been worked out by many teams w/wood bats and been thru the showcase scene (he's been to many showcases, FWIW). He's been scouted w/wood. As far as why he is struggling, it could be many things (some that are correctable and some that might not be) as well as why they got rid of him, hopefully it's a numbers thing and he happened to be best one of the names that Towers likely gave to Hendry.
  22. As far as Bowen, I think he's likely destined as a career back-up type of C. Can switch-hit, never had great bat speed, decent C power from the L side. I hope he's not considered a better option than Soto (when healthy).
  23. You're assuming two things for the Cubs to get compensation from Barrett leaving FA. 1)Sign before 12/1. 2)The Cubs offer arbitration. I doubt these two things would've been possible.
