It's not shocking that the Cards have fallen well off their 2015 pace, given that they had an historic outlier pitching wise, and being that they lost their best position player (by WAR) and pitcher from last year. Mozeliak gambled on guys like Grichuk, Wong, etc., and that gamble has failed. Of course Aledmys Diaz has been pretty great, but he's the exception. Their defense is horrific, and that has impacted their pitching staff. And Rosenthal turned into a pumpkin. And I think that the Cards FO greatly underestimated the effect age would have on guys like Wainwright and Holliday (he's healthy and not hitting, I was assured that was something that did not happen). The Cardinals are getting old, and just aren't all that talented. Oh, and Mike Matheny is a dunce. Pittsburgh is a more curious case to me, and a huge part of their disappointing season stems from Andrew McCutchen suddenly and inexplicably turning into a near replacement level player. And Liriano turning into Mr. Hyde. That team should be better than it is.
