  1. If the 4-5% thing happens, it happens. There's not much you can do to move the needle on what can be projected to happen with 2 months to go. Obviously, next season is in play. That also puts Lucroy a year older (and he's still one season removed from being not good - only to illustrate that he's not some sort of 4 WAR lock being a year older). If you're going to keep bringing up that Lucroy wasn't good last year, it's also worth mentioning that he's been pretty darned good every other season since 2012. I like the chances of him being a 3-5 WAR player next year better than the chances of him being a 1 WAR player again. But like TT, I don't think the acquisition cost is worth the improvement. If we're going to give up the players it'd take, I'd prefer they be spent on areas of greater need.
  2. Rich Hill/Josh Reddick maybe, if the rumors are accurate.
  3. I'd say 70/30 Montero/Chapman Yeah, it was pretty much right at his five hole and he tried to backhand it instead of smothering it.
  4. Montero is just comprehensively awful right now.
  5. Man, this strike zone is all over the place.
  6. this is the best defense of a (perceived) overpay i've seen, even though it probably assigns too much credit I don't know that Theo intended to throw off other teams, but I think he definitely saw value in being the first to jump into the market, given so many top-tier relievers are out there. I'm not saying I fully buy into it (or agree with it even if true), but I definitely think it's plausible. I was listening to Olney's podcast, and he and Keith Law were discussing it, and Law implied that Epstein had talked in the past about the value of disrupting a market this way.
  7. Apparently those making inquiries about Davis have been told that acquiring him would require more than it cost the Cubs to get Chapman. Not going to argue if that is fair or not, but the reliever market really changed with the Chapman deal. Related to what UMF posted, there has been growing speculation that this was a byproduct that Theo intended, to either drive the reliever acquisition cost for Washington, San Francisco and St. Louis way up and/or to force them to back out of the market altogether.
  8. I suppose one fringe benefit from this deal is that it will drive the cost for quality relievers up pretty significantly, and the Cards are in the market for one (or two).
  9. mckinney is literal garbage so of course id rather have cease than him but jesus christ the wailing and gnashing of teeth over these children in LOW A BALL is really amazing. Prospect-hoarding gone mad. You knew it was bound to happen. To be fair, I don't think people wanted to hold on to Torres so much as they would like to have seen him used as part of a deal for a player with more years of control.
  10. I really feel like the extension is still in play. So many things would make more sense, including why this isn't done yet.
  11. Or somebody gets Davis or Miller and we are all like, why the [expletive] did we pay that much when all we had to add was Candy Man to get Miller? If the Yankees go back on their decision to keep Miller, the cost is going to be eye watering after this.
  12. At this point I'm just thankful that the Yanks chose Torres over Jimenez (if that choice was in fact presented to them, as was reported).
  13. I understand the criticisms of the trade but i think there's a bit of hyperbole being used in this thread. I mean, Chapman is really [expletive] good. There may be some hyperbole, but there's a lot of justification as well. People talking themselves into being ok with paying too much. There's a difference with tolerating something and being "okay" with it. It was said a day or two ago that the fans of the team that acquired Chapman were not going to be happy with the cost, and boy were they right. But I can live with it, even if I don't like it.
