  1. One other thing about the Jason Lane thing... I get the feeling that the Reds aren't seeking a specific player so much as they're looking to pick the top prospects/young players from each organization as opposed to acquiring a need player. Although, I never knew Jason Lane was 29 years old. That kinda surprised me. In other words, they might be asking for the following packages from each team... LA Dodgers: Chad Billingsley, Cesar Izturis, and James Loney Cubs: Jerome Williams, Felix Pie, and Sean Marshall Boston: Hanley Ramirez, Bronson Arroyo, and Anibal Sanchez Baltimore: Erik Bedard, Hayden Penn, and Nick Markarkis etc...
  2. It'd make sense if his splits weren't so extreme. His OPS against lefties this year is .197.
  3. Doesn't Freel have a foot injury that has the word "degenerative" thrown around when describing it?
  4. Here's a thought: What if the Cubs did this because they're going to trade Hollandsworth?
  5. If Cincy desired Gerut in a trade, Cleveland likely would have shipped him off to Cincy by now for Joe Randa, who they are rumored to be ga-ga for.
  6. Dubois given our current roster. However, if Gerut manages to be spun into some big deal for an OF bat, I like it. Right now, I dislike it.
  7. Greenberg's on the 15 day DL. I'm guessing that means he goes to AAA or AA upon his healing. I'm still confused.
  8. I'm in agreement with everyone on this deal. We already have two left handed LFs on this team in Grieve and Hollandsworth. Gerut can't hit lefties worth a lick, so it's not like he can platoon with Hollandsworth or Grieve. He's not much of an upgrade over either, so platooning him with Murton makes no sense. Toss Adam Greenberg into the equation and you got a head-scratcher. If we're releasing Grieve and using Gerut as a 5th OF, I could kinda see the point of this deal, but giving up Dubois does not make it a worthwhile deal. All right, this only makes sense with a trade. What team would want Ben Grieve, Todd Hollandsworth, or Jody Gerut as a left handed LF?
  9. Wait a second, Jody Gerut's a lefty. How exactly is a guy who posts a .208/.302/.311/.613 line against lefties and a .289/.349/.507/.856 against righties supposed to platoon with Hollandsworth, who plays primarily against righties? I'm confused. Are we trading for a right handed LF next or something?
  10. Dubois wasn't going to get any PT with Dusty at the helm, unfortunately. Gerut has experience in the majors and should at least see regular time on this team. I'm guessing Murton gets shipped to AAA after this?
  11. Len Kasper just made a reference to A Mighty Wind! "WHA HAPPEN!?"
  12. WHOA! WALKER! Quit robbing DLee of RBIs!
  13. Some responses to a few things posted around here... 1) Eric Patterson is doing quite a good job in Peoria this season, don't get me wrong. However, there are a few knocks I have against him. As it already has been mentioned, he's playing in a league that's at or slightly below the level of talent he faced in college. I'd like to see him at Daytona by season's end to see how he's doing there. Secondly, if he were a SS and projected to play there effectively in the majors, I'd be MUCH higher on him. But as a 2B? Ehhhhhhh...it's a bit easier to be a crappy defensive player with a good bat (see: Kent, Jeff). My understanding is that Eric's defense at second is only above average, but I might be mistaken. He's a top 20 guy for me and he could shoot into the Top 10 if the Cubs move him up to Daytona and he keeps up his performance. 2) Angel Guzman has such a special and incredible upside...but come on, this entire season he's been "7-10 days away" from returning. I'd love to see him pitching this season, but until that happens, he's been passed by a good number of pitching prospects on my list. 3) I loved that episode, too. :D
  14. I'm back from my trip. I'll be taking my job back tonight. :D
  15. Wasn't he one of the candidates to take the Cubs' open manager's spot back in the '02/'03 offseason?
  16. He has spent some amount of time at DH. That always helps.
  17. Managers and coaches are the ones who decide the awards. It's kind of like being named an NFL All Pro, where typically a person is given the honor based on reputation more than actual play. There are no qualifications for the amount of time played at the position (as evidenced by when Raffy won one for 1B despite playing 28 games there), although it usually helps to hit at least .260 or better.
  18. Hmmmmmmmm...Pie wasn't bolded when I posted that... :-k
  19. Backe's not exactly established and valuable either. That career 5+ ERA would look reeeeeeeeeeeeal good at the GABP. Patton's the one that bothers me in this deal, though. How a team evaluates him is a big part of the deal, but basically speaking, he's a young and mature lefty who has terrific and advanced stuff and might move fast through any system. He is in Low A right now, so he's a ways away from contributing. He also is a bit undersized (6'1, 180 lbs), so durability might be an issue. My problem is whether or not the Cubs have a prospect like him that would interest the Reds. Hill or Marshall, maybe. It all depends on how the Reds see the Cubs' prospects. My honest opinion is that the Cubs could (and should) trump this deal and still not overpay. Patterson + Mitre + Marshall + cash or a PTBNL for Dunn might not be the worst of ideas, imo.
