I've gotta see his power and walk totals increase, as well as error totals decrease, before I put Castro ahead of Cashner. Granted a 19 year old Shortstop with an OPS over 700 in high-A ball is fairly impressive. But I can't rank him over a pitcher with an ideal frame, clean mechanics, plus mid 90's fastball, potential for a plus slider, and an ever improving changeup. Essentially with Andrew Cashner I see someone who with more polishing of his secondary pitches could be a top of the rotation pitcher. We really don't have any idea what Starlin Castro's upside is. Cashner seems like a safer bet to become an impact big league player. I understand the sentiment, but the one thing holding me back from ranking Cashner over Castro is that Cashner needs to prove he can start over the course of a full season, stay healthy, and maintain his stuff throughout. I think he has a chance of doing that, don't get me wrong. However, considering there is still a distinct likelihood he will end up as a reliever in the majors, I think that hurts his stock a decent amount.

It seems like they're going based on prospect status rather than draft position. Matt Bush never had a very good prospect status. However, in terms of where he was drafted and the train wreck that followed, you could make an argument that he's one of the greatest busts of all time.

I'm guessing part of the reason this trade was made was that Ryan topped out at 87 when he made his Iowa debut.

Can't say this was a bad trade. Hart's value has never been higher and I've always been suspicious of his control. Ascanio flashed some good stuff and had some upside, but he's always been inconsistent. Harrison is an eh prospect who'll probably be a utilityman down the line. Grabow and Gorzelanny are not a great haul, but honestly, the Cubs didn't give up much.

No prob! A lot of people have been pitching in lately, which is awesome considering I spent the past two and a half months studying for one of the most horrific experiences in my life. I don't think you can sacrifice a bad player to the baseball Gods. I believe, actually, that it was late in Spring Training when Lou sacrificed Milton for a late July surge. He temporarily drained Dempster and Ramirez for August, Harden and Soto for September, and now Lilly to advance to the NLCS. I'm also pretty sure that he sacrificed Miles, but all that gave the Cubs was extra batting practice over the All-Star break. I'm pretty sure they're just going to give Aaron Miles away to a good family who lives out on a farm if he keeps up his production down in AAA.

Compared to last season, this season has been a breath of fresh air. It's nice being excited about guys in the minors once more.

Wells/Ascanio/etc. don't have an impact on how the system is ranked. If you wanted to evaluate the Cubs based on the talent the system has churned out, they'd rate pretty well on the pitching side of things and fairly poorly on the hitting side of things. BA ranked us 27th mostly because the system lacked depth and was very thin at the top, with Josh Vitters pretty much being the only Top 100 prospect we had along with a number of guys who were question marks. Right now, with the way the season has progressed, the Cubs are likely closer to the bottom third than the bottom 5. The system has four, possibly five guys (Vitters, Castro, Jackson, Cashner; maaaaaaaaaaaaybe Lee) who could make a strong case for Top 100 consideration if they produce up to their expectations. The 2008 draft yielded some excellent results and the surge of international players (particularly from the Pac Rim) have helped a lot. There's more talent in the system and some intriguing depth in the lower levels. What is going to matter a lot in the offseason is how the 2009 draft pans out. The Cubs have signed some interesting names, but the quality of talent has been somewhat lacking thus far. Signing Raley and a few of the HS guys would go a long way towards helping that.

Maybe Zambrano can give Pierre to Milton Bradley.

i wouldn't call 27 BB in 89 games "excellent" in low A for a guy who played three years at vandy. a walk rate of 8.2% isn't bad but it really isn't good either. For our system, it's good. Excellent was a bit of hyperbole, yeah. I'm not saying Flaherty is a Top 100 prospect or whatever, but he's better than a lot of people think.
