Huh, I always thought deflections negated offsides calls.
-
He tried to kick the ball so he's certainly involved in the play. He was more involved than the Paraguay guy who went up for the header against Spain and was rightly called offside. I don't think that was clearly offside either. His leg was past the last defender but the rest of his body was even when the ball was kicked. The ref could have called offside but I don't think Uruguay got screwed. On the replay, the ball first deflected off of a Uruguay defender; I don't think there was an offside there.

I was kind of wondering what the heck was going on with the Iowa game since the box score was updating really erratically. Link (complete with fun picture!) -

That's been Jackson's MO lately. He'll be really good for the first few innings, and then implode. I really have to wonder how much his temporary move to the bullpen played into this. -

I could see rating him as high as the #2 prospect in this system. Frankie Piliere mentioned that his defense is currently good enough for the big leagues. He regularly makes stellar plays at SS, plus his arm and range are stellar. His speed is a definite plus, as is his ability to take a walk. If he develops any useful power, he could be one of the best prospects in baseball. He still has a bit of work to do, but nevertheless, he's doing a good job of living up to his potential. -

I think he's a decent prospect. It's easy to write him off b/c he's Bob's son and was drafted in the late rounds, but he's shown he can play at every level he's been at. IMO his main problem is his age. I wouldn't worry so much about his age; catchers usually take longer to develop and tend to be a tad on the older side relative to their leagues. Brenly is a decent enough prospect that he could be a good backup some day. He grades out reasonably well defensively and won't be a slouch at the plate. -
Should Hednry get another chance?
Outshined_One replied to Little Slide Rooter's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
BR lists Cherry and Moore in the Trachsel deal, but the Cubs also gave up RHP Jake Renshaw, a potentially intriguing prospect down in Peoria back in 2007 (who fell off the face of the planet in 2009). What ticked me off the most about that deal was the fact that the Cubs even gave up anything of value for Trachsel, who honestly was not any better than any of the AAA filler in the Cubs' system at the time. Hendry's had some good trades, but one of his nasty tendencies is selling low on players. Felix Pie, Corey Patterson, Sammy Sosa, Rich Hill, Jacque Jones, Kyle Farnsworth, and Juan Cruz all come to mind. Also, a number of his bad deals tend to be ones that are easily forgotten or glossed over. Bill Mueller, Mark Bellhorn, and Michael Wuertz are some guys Hendry sold off for pennies. He also traded for such illustrious names as Tony Womack, Jose Macias, Aaron Heilman, and Neal Cotts. I'm not saying Hendry sucks at trades, but I think some people on this board overrate him because of three really good deals (Nomar, Harden, and A-Ram). In reality, he's had plenty of bad trades. -
I agree with this somewhat. Most people though hadn't really seen Colvin before this year. He hit 16 home runs in under 500 AB's in 07. He hit only 14 in over 500 AB's in 08 but it was uncertain how much of that was slowed by the problems that led to the TJS. He then only hit 1 home run in Daytona in 114 AB's but 13 in Tennessee in just over 300 AB's. And then of course he added all that muscle over the offseason. It's also worth pointing out that he had one of the most horrific injuries in the minors while with Daytona in 2009, when he and Tony Campana had a head-on collision when both made full-speed dives for a ball at the same time. Colvin didn't fully recover from it until late May or so, not too long before he was promoted from Daytona to Tennessee. I think part of the backlash against Tyler Colvin stems from the fact that it seems like he's far exceeded any expectations we had for him coming into this season. Colvin was never an elite level prospect with the Cubs, but I have to wonder how his numbers would have looked if he had a clean bill of health throughout his tenure in the minors. Frankly, I'm of the opinion that he should get as much playing time this season as possible. This team isn't going anywhere, so we might as well see if Colvin can elevate his value to the point of using him as a valuable trade chip in the offseason. If he falls on his face, oh well.

I'm back and forth on keeping Wilken. He's done a pretty good job of targeting relative unknowns and sleepers. Plus, he hasn't had a whole lot of money to spend on the draft. Assuming the Ricketts family starts spending more on the draft, he should do a better job. However, I have issues with how it doesn't seem like he values players relative to how other teams value those players. It seems like his record with the Cubs has more reaches than steals.

Outshined_One replied to Little Slide Rooter's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
The problem is, while he's very good at coordinating trades and working the phones, the returns he gets in a number of his trades have me concerned. Sure, he's pulled off some good ones (Gorzelanny, Harden, Nomar), but he's also pulled off some really horrific ones (Trachsel, Juan Pierre, Izturis). -

2010 BA Hot Sheet / BP Monday Ten Pack

Brett Jackson got honorable mention for CF in BA's midseason All Stars list. -
Marmol I can kind of buy since this system has a glut of pitching prospects who could potentially fill his shoes, but catchers of Soto's quality are a rarity...despite what our bonehead manager thinks. There's no one available in the system who can provide the overall value at catcher that Soto can provide. The free agent market doesn't look particularly good for catchers, which would make that even worse. Moreover, this team needs all the offense it can get. To me, there's no harm in keeping Soto at least through the deadline, unless a team makes some insane offer that blows away the Cubs. However, I don't see that happening.
