  1. It'd be pretty damn funny (and terrifying) if the Phillies signed him.

  5. Yeesh, how many late inning leads has Peoria blown this season?
  6. This team is on pace to be the worst Cubs team of my lifetime. They're older than the average MLB team. There were players on this team who clearly attracted attention from contenders. Yet...all that happened was Fukudome got traded and Wood vetoed a trade. That's it. Maybe someone gets shipped out on waivers, but if the Cubs were shooing away teams before the non-waiver deadline, why would they change their attitudes for the waiver deadline? This team keeps reaching new lows. I'm impressed.
  7. Wasn't the idea that the Cubs needed to keep Hendry through the trade deadline so that he could do what he does best... make trades? Now that the deadline has come and gone with only one rather insubstantial move, is there any reason whatsoever to keep him any longer? Unless the guy Ricketts wants as his next GM is already under contract, there is no more benefit to allowing Hendry to finish the season. There's still the September 1st waiver wire deadline...but I get the feeling we won't even see Pena et al. moved by then, either.
  8. I would be furious if your buddy was talking about Christian Villanueva and Justin Grimm. I would be too. But he didnt give him any specific names. He didn't, in fairness. Regardless, it's annoying to see the trade deadline go with the Cubs only trading away Fukudome and attempting to trade Wood, but getting vetoed.
  9. I would be furious if your buddy was talking about Christian Villanueva and Justin Grimm.
  10. Gotta be honest, I'd be okay, but not thrilled, if the Cubs had received that package from Atlanta in exchange for Byrd. The Braves made out really nicely on that trade.

  12. Late as hell. He was already on top of the bag Also wasn't within reach of the bag. And he went in with spikes high. I can't believe nobody hbp'd him later in the game. Quade probably thought it was good for Castro to get some intensity and see how a team plays the game the way it's supposed to be played.
  13. This is pretty much the low point in the season, isn't it?
  14. Any time Samardzija pitches is an adventure. Whenever he's on the mound, he's either perfect or walking everyone on the other team.
  15. I think their perception can be broken into two parts. The first part is that the Cubs system has taken a step back this year due to injuries and slumps. The only real breakouts we had this year were Robert Whitenack and Matt Szczur. Even those prospects who've showed improvement have only marginally improved their stock. The Astros system hasn't had as much success, but their struggles have not been as noteworthy or newsworthy. That brings me to the second point: name recognition. The lower levels of the Cubs' system is made up of a lot of unknowns. As exciting and intriguing Peralta/Liria/Cruz/Wang/et al. are, I don't think most people who follow the minors know who they are, much less how much potential they have. Wells gets some attention for his signing bonus, but that's about it. Folty and DeShields were high profile draft picks. Altuve and Martinez have been in the minors for awhile. While Baez got some attention in the draft, Springer got a ton since he was on TV and people were discussing him as a potential Top 5 pick prior to this season. I don't agree with them, but I see where they're coming from on that. Since we're here, how would you rank Peralta, Cruz, Wang, and Liria?
  16. Heh. Knobler. Fister's a really underrated pickup for the Tigers. His underlying numbers are solid.

  18. yeah, that stuff with Scott sounds sketchy for sure It happens more frequently than you think. A friend of mine works for a scouting group. One of their clients was picked in the supplemental first round a year or two ago and had a prearranged deal with the team that drafted him. After the draft, someone got in dear old dad's ear that his son was worth even more money and that he could be signed to a bigger deal. Dad informed the team that his son would not be signing unless the team added another $500k to the signing bonus. When the team threatened to walk away altogether, everyone shaped up and signed on the original deal's dotted line.
  19. AND playing RF! I feel kind of schadenfreudey. Is this how Cardinals fans felt when the Cubs were playing Aaron Miles regularly?
  20. He tends to hit a wall around the 5th or 6th inning. It may just be a conditioning issue for him.
  21. The bottom line for me is that I agree with you 99%. Garza is having an excellent year and, even if his production declines in the next two seasons, he still would be valuable to the team as a 2-3 WAR pitcher. He is most certainly worth keeping around even if he drops to that level. However... The remaining 1% is based off the feeling I get that Garza's value may never be higher. As I mentioned, my skepticism is based on the fact that he's having a career year, namely as far as FIP, xFIP, and WAR go. I'll admit it, my basis for having that skepticism is somewhat flimsy, but so be it. If I were running a team that was effectively punting 2012 in favor of competing in 2013 and beyond, Garza would be a really difficult case for me. On the one hand, he's young, he's pitching really well, and he'll still be with the team come 2013. On the other hand, if a team were to offer a package of prospects/young players equivalent to his value (say, the Rangers offering a package built around Martin Perez and Jurickson Profar)...I'd really have to think about it. I don't think Garza should be actively shopped around. But, if someone came along with a serious offer for Garza and I didn't think this team was capable of contending in 2012, I'd be tempted.

  23. I strongly considered putting Garza in that group, but he's not on the same level as Soto or Castro are for me. Garza's on pace for the best year of his career by a longshot and I'm skeptical about whether or not he'd be able to keep that up over the next two years. Putting it bluntly, he's a fantastic sell high candidate. He should be worth a ton in the trade market and I don't think he should be untouchable. Even in his down years, Soto is still an above average catcher compared to the rest of MLB. I'm doubtful the Cubs could get Soto's 2011 production from Castillo/Clevenger going forward. Unless you think some team will grossly overpay to get him, Soto should not be traded.
