    :shock: I agree that Biggio should be elected to the HOF, but could you explain why the Astrodome is a small park?

    The RF problem was created last year when for some stupid reason Hendry felt Jones was worth $5 million a year when the market was saying otherwise. I no longer hate Jones simply because he's just doing what many of us thought he'd do when Hendry decided he saw a superstar when the rest of us saw Jones as just mediocre. I would suck at the major league level but I'd sign a $15 million contract too if Hendry offered it to me. So I blame the managers and Hendry more for playing him than Jones for sucking which is what we knew he would do when signed. Murton should be sent down since he seems to be pressing when at Wrigley, and it's not due to lack of playing time because his numbers should be more similar whether on the road or at home if it were due to lack of playing time. He is really not any better this year than last year and I think has regressed in some areas. Hopefully, he'll go to Des Moines and work on what he needs to work on and come back to help the Cubs.

    Okay, I'm watching the Royals/Cards game and the Cards have Eckstein at third with one-out and Pujols is up, with Encarnacion on deck. Instead of pitching around Pujols they pitch to him and he singles home Eckstein. There is absolutely no one in that lineup who would concern me other than Pujols. So why do teams still pitch to him? Last year, same thing. He was really there only stick in the lineup and teams pitched to him. I don't get it. Help me understand.

    What has Theriot done to earn himself a reputation of baseball smartness? I was referring to his patience at the plate.

    It is the Hendry era. When different players are doing the same thing even after Baker is gone, it should solidify the point that Hendry is responsible for getting players who are not necessarily baseball smart. How Theriot is on this team I'll never know because he is not a Hendry type of player.

    Who cares trade him for a top prospect package or Texiera You'd give up a top prospect for Z knowing he's a free-agent at the end of the year? At this point, we're not going to get as much for Z now as what we would've during the off-season or last season.

I like Murton, but I think he's below average in base running, defense and average offensively. That's why I call him below average. Why is the font so big?

    I don't understand how you can think very many people on here wanted Hendry around for this season. A lot of people wanted both gone, not just Baker. You must not have been around a lot last year. Trust me, there were many on here who said they'd give Hendry another year and then fire him.

    Uh, I'd like to be one of the first to say that the last three years was not just Baker's fault. It looks as if Piniella doesn't have control over this team, either. Nice work, Hendry. I don't understand why many on here thought it would be okay to fire Baker and keep Hendry another year.

    I don't understand the love for Barrett. If Hendry had been smart enough to make one or two more offensive moves, Barrett would be expendable. You don't need an offensive catcher if you are getting offense elsewhere -- ask the Astros and Cardinals. Have some of you forgotten how streaky Barrett is offensively? Even if he were hitting this year, I think we'd have maybe one or two more wins. Then again maybe we'd have the same record. Barrett is not a smart baseball player. Remember Felipe Alou said he would never be an everyday big league catcher. Yeah, well, he is one, but if somebody had asked me after that quote was made what team would Barrett likely be on I would have said the Cubs.

    I think it's more accurate to say that later in his career, he was overrated defensively. A big reason is because he was previously an excellent defender. That's not just something that happens to Jim Edmonds; players commonly undeserved Gold Gloves and are selected to the All-Star game based on reputation and historical performance. Bingo. I would agree and also add offensive performance at predominately defensive positions to that list . . . Ryne Sandberg made a living making the routine plays, hitting 30 dingers and taking the gold glove. The biggest difference here is that there aren't many Cub fans who call Sandberg "a great defensive second baseman". Over his career he was very good but not great defensively. I call Edmonds very good but not great because it's not as if he got to balls that other CFs couldn't get to. Ozzie Smith I consider a great defensive player because he did get to balls that no other SS would get to. I also call Willie McGee a great defensive CF because he got to balls not many CF could get to --- including Edmonds. It's too bad that McGee played for the Cards in an era when the Cardinals didn't televise home games and ESPN wasn't what it is today or people would recognize McGee for his defensive skills. And he played at a time when there were several above average defensive OFs like Murphy, Maddox and Dawson just to name a few.

The only reason why there is any hope for this season is because we're in the NL Central. I think you're right. The teams organizational philosophy really is the issue. There are so many faults in this team's construction it is almost mind blowing. Even if we can get hot and make a push for the NL Central title (unlikely, but possible) it will only encourage Hendry to make another potentially damaging move at the deadline. It's like the team has taken 10 steps back since catching fire in 2003. The regression has been utterly depressing. I think Hendry gets too much credit for 2003. The Ramirez and Lofton deal was a good one, but honestly Houston lost the NL Central more than we won it so I can't really give Hendry props for the 2003 season.

    Okay, after 1/4 of the season without Baker I'm still seeing the same stupid crap that I hated last year, 2005 and 2006. I'm glad Baker isn't here but it's clear not every bad thing was his fault. After the last three seasons I think Hendry needs to change his philosophy on "toolsy" players.

    Normally I'd be excited about the Cardinals demise, but they're World Champs. So no material there. Stupid Mets bullpen.
