    So I see Mr. Spezio has been activated for tonight's game. Well, I have to ask the question to Cardinal fans (basically to piss them off. After all, what's a rivalry for?), why have many players over the years had so much trouble remaining sober/ off illegal drugs while playing in St. Louis? Let's see.... Darrell Porter, Lonnie Smith, Keith Hernandez, David Green, Scott Spezio, Garry Templeton (strongly suspected but never proven)......

    The state of Florida should only have one MLB team. I think the Devil Rays and Marlins should become one team. There is a point to be made that Dolphin Stadium itself is a big reason for the poor attendance. You have to remember a few years ago when the Dolphins made the playoffs, the game was blacked out in South Florida because they didn't sell out. I think in order for baseball to work in South Florida a baseball only stadium would have to be built in downtown Miami.

    Kendall is one of the few hit and run candidates we have. I would've liked to see him in a hit and run situation since he goes to right field pretty well.

    The sad thing is, if Jacque Jones hit 60 HRs and was given nightly curtain calls he would still never like the Cubs. For some reason, the Cubs fans just hated him like no other Cubs. Think about all of our bad FAs signings, none were ever hated as much as Jacque. The man hit a career high in HRs and was still hated by the Cubs. Not fair, and I feel really bad for the guy because you have to believe that he thinks racism is the reason. Todd Hundley. Put away the race card. He flipped off the fans. He brought that all on himself. Whatever the reason, Hundley was more hated than JJ. Think about the crap white guys who catch a pass though. Augie, Koyie Hill, Paul Baco. None of them caught what our black guys did. That wasn't what was being discussed. I was contesting the comment that JJ was the most hated Cubs player. I've never understood why Jones seemed to be hated more than Hendry for the signing. Jones was a mediocre player who was smart enough to sign with a team whose GM was dumb enough to offer a contract that the market wasn't calling for. Unlike LaTroy Hawkins who was a good relief pitcher who came to us and flat out stunk.

    Why do you hate saying it? We all wanted him gone and saw no purpose he could positively serve on this team. He has been huge for us and as a long time critic, I'm glad he's picking up DLee, who has been pretty awful over the last fifteen games. Remember the old cliche, some of the best trades are those you don't make.

    I wish DLee hadn't swung at the first pitch. I thought Jacque deserved a curtain call. He has been my goat for a long time, but today, thus far, other than Hill, he's been the player of the game.

    Just out of curiosity, do we have several of the same scouts as we did years ago or have we had some turnover. I'm asking because I'm wondering if we have the same scouts that swore guys like Dubois, Kelton, Montanez, et al would be very good major leaguers or if many are gone now.

    Games out don't matter as much as games out on the loss side. We're still just two out on the loss side. It would have been nice if our leadoff man actually found a way to get on base at least once tonight.

    Okay, a lot of people state that the Cardinals are the luckiest team in all of major sports (and I tend to agree). That's why I think they have a chance of winning the wild card. Let's not forget how we thought they were buried in 2001 when they were 8 1/2 games behind us then. They played in the playoffs and we didn't.

    I think some of you are being way too hard on Baylor. Was he a great manager? No. But how do we know how good he is when with the Cubs he had crap teams? Sosa and Grace offensively is pretty much all we had. The 2001 team was a surprise and could've won the division had Wood and Farnsworth had not gotten hurt late in the season. Think about what Lynch and MacPhail gave him and I don't know any manager who could've done well.

    If Lee drops the appeal he has to sit out five games. With the appeal, he may have it reduced to four or three. I know the Nats/Pirates have been bad and teams we should beat, but I wouldn't go automatically marking a bunch of "W's" with our without Lee.

    My opinion of Ed Lynch just went way up. I think he and Hendry were pretty equally bad as GMs. They both hired idiot former players to manage (Baker and Baylor). They both built the same piecemeal teams hoping over-the-hill vets would return to their glory days. They both got lucky once, and each time it was mainly due to the offensive production of a single player, Sosa, a tremendous contribution from a rookie pitcher, and some overachieving veterans. The 98 team had a lot better offense and the 03 team had better pitching, but neither were, in my opinion a particularly well put together team. The 03 team was better because at the end of the day, great pitching wins more games than great hitting. And it also helps when you have a miracle weekend where the awful, awful Brewers beat the Astros. But I get your point.

    As people on here know, I have no love at all for Hendry. To the point where I said after last season, he and Baker should go or they both should stay. Keeping one and not the other is just like keeping them both. Wish I had been wrong, but to this point, it looks as if I'm not. I still think Ed Lynch was worse than Jim Hendry, but I respected him after learning he had offered two resignations to MacPhail before MacPhail accepted it. At least Lynch figured out he wasn't doing a good job. I actually think Hendry believes he's doing a pretty good job.

    Just when I think we are over the Dusty Baker era.... unless you're calling the Dusty Baker the Jim Hendry era. Look, Dusty Baker had nothing to do with the pick-offs and dropped balls this year. I don't know too many athletes in any sport who were fundamentally sound for all of their careers then suddenly forgot. Maddux still was a gold glove caliber pitcher even when playing for Dusty Baker. I think the "stink" you're talking about is the "stink" of valuing "tools" and not really caring about fundamentals.

    I am one of the few who has really never liked Barrett. But you have to look at it from the standpoint of there's no way he would be re-signed next year to a similar contract that he's received over the past four years. Also, as much as I dislike Hendry, maybe some players expressed some dislike for Barrett. I don't know. Having said that, if you were another MLB team would you have given up a lot for Barrett? I sure wouldn't. I still think it's funny that seven years ago Felipe Alou said that Barrett would never be a good MLB catcher (from a defensive standpoint). Seven years later I think Barrett is closer to being a bad defensive catcher than a good one. And yet, he could actually hit. I would have rather gotten the supplemental pick and Barrett for the rest of the year than a backup catcher and a awful prospect. You wouldn't need an offensive catcher if you had a GM smart enough to get offensive players at other positions. The Astros and Cardinals have done quite well over the past ten years without offensive catchers.

    This is just a hunch but I think he'll have his hearing in NY while the Cubs are in DC the first week in July and he'll likely miss the four game Nationals series or miss three of the Nationals game and one Pirates game. I'm guessing he'll have his five game suspension reduced to four.

    Why do so many on here hate the Yankees? They're not in our division and we will rarely play them. They have an owner who wants to win. They sign/trade for players who end up producing like they should. They have developed good players through their farm system. These are just three things I wish the Cubs could do consistently.

    :shock: I agree that Biggio should be elected to the HOF, but could you explain why the Astrodome is a small park? http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/limajo01.shtml Not the only thing! But seriously it was consistently one of the best pitchers parks in baseball when he played in it. Gotcha. I thought you were calling the Astrodome a small park from a hitter's standpoint. I remember back in the day fly balls went to die out in the outfield with the power alleys being 396' before they brought the fences in. Even then it wasn't easy to hit balls out.

    I sort of already think its the Hall of Very Good. Biggio was an average player for a large chunk of his career. When he played CF he was one of the worst defensive center fielders in the game...and he played it for a couple of seasons. Someone said he was one of the top 50 players of all time...I could probably name 50 players who's career I would rather have from people that are playing right now. It is the Hall of the Very Good. The Hall of Fame should be for the greatest of the great, and not for those who were just very good or great. Basically, if there's debate then they shouldn't get in. But since it's the Hall of the Very Good a lot of players in the Hall have been elected. I think it should be a bigger deal when people are selected into the Hall than what it is now when it's a big deal when no one is selected. Why is it now considered showing disrespect to players if they don't get selected to the Hall of Fame but are still considered very good?

    Just a thought. But do the Cubs teach their minor leaguers that when a pitcher is in a jam the first pitch to a batter will generally be a pitcher's pitch and not a hitter's pitch? Both Fontenot and Hill swung at the first pitch and hit them weakly, although Fontenot's went foul.
