Game 7 was on my birthday and my wife insisted on throwing a small party when I got home from work, so I couldn't immediately drive down to the city. I decided I'd watch the start of the game at home (in Wheaton) and if the score was anything other than an Indians blowout, I'd drive down mid-game to the city to be there for the end. I was going to stay until the end of the 5th inning but with 2 outs in the 4th, Kyle got squeezed on a pitch and ended up walking the guy and Lester was coming in. Finally got downtown after all the mid-game drama and looked everywhere in Wrigleyville for parking. Ended up parking super far away at Damen and School. Turned off the car as the Cubs made the last out in the top of the 8th. Started walking towards Wrigley, I am passing by bars and I see the first out, and then the 2nd out, and then the hit and Lester pulled. I get to Southport and School as Chapman gives up the hit to make it 6-4. Friends walking around Southport/Addison so we agree to meet at D'agostinos. I can barely see the TV as I'm walking up but can hear the group of ~100 people huddled around make a loud audible groan. I can finally see the TV and see Indians players celebrating. They didn't just....? It took me a few seconds to realize what happened. Strangely, half the people there couldnt grasp what had happened, many of them were just there for the party and didn't understand that the game was now tied. I remained positive thinking the Cubs would score in the 9th and all would be good but when Fowler grounded out, I turned into a dejected ninny and decided I was too upset and would just go home. If they ended up winning so be it. So I slowly walked back toward my car and tried really hard to not hear any noises from the crowd. I didn't know how I wanted to find out about a walkoff World Series loss so I just tried to block everything out and occasionally refresh this board, but it was too bogged down to load often. I did hear about the rain delay and thought maybe I could make it home before the game resumed. But it was a super short rain delay obviously, so I literally sat down in my car right before Schwarber singled to lead off the 10th. I just sat in my car and watched the game on my phone until I saw the Zobrist double. Now all the sudden I HAD to get back to Wrigleyville so I basically power walked/jogged back and caught what was going on from the bars I passed. Got back to Dags right as Carl got the 2nd out and watched the rest there. When the Cubs won, the entire growing crowd just instinctively sprinted down Addison towards the park. somewhere between Lakewood and Racine the crowd was large enough that you couldn't walk without having to push through people. I ended up getting to somewhere close to the Cubby Bear before I turned around and found some random bar to meet up with my friends. Anyways GREAT story I know, I just felt like typing all of it out and remembering it.
