This is completely speculative because obviously a million things would have changed if teams were playing for 7 playoff spots a conference vs. 6, but just for fun, how much different does the lovie era look with the new playoff format. As it stands, they made the playoffs 3 times in 9 seasons, twice getting a 2 seed, once getting a 1 seed. If we kept the standings the same (meaning no butterfly effect), the Bears make the playoffs 3 additional times during Lovie's tenure, including the final 3 years before he was left go. Those years are 2008, 2011 and 2012. 2012 they definitely were a legit playoff team as they finished 6th in DVOA and could have made a playoff run. 2011 is a little harder to say because Jay Cutler missed the final 6 games of the season at a point where the Bears were rolling at 7-3 (they finished 1-5 without him). IIRC, Jay potentially could have played week 17 if the Bears were still in the playoff hunt, so we have reason to believe he would have been back for the playoffs. In 2008 I remember them being pretty mediocre led by Kyle Orton. They had a rather easy schedule and blew a game against a crappy Texans team in week 17 to miss the playoffs. Not sure they deserved to be there. Also changing...the 2010 team was fairly average by DVOA (15th). They earned a bye with a pretty low record for a bye team at 11-5. They then had the fortune of playing possibly the worst playoff team in a long time (the 7-9 Seahawks) at home to advance to the NFC championship game where they lost to GB. I believe in the new playoff format the 7 seed would have been the 10-6 Giants which could have easily been a loss. Long rambling post about hypotheticals from a decade ago. I'm stuck in a quarantine and work is slow today, I have to do something. And regarding the playoff format, I hate the idea of a 7th team added, but I really like the idea of getting rid of one of the byes. It just seems so much of an advantage, though I guess guaranteeing that 1 conference championship team will be playing their 3rd playoff game in a row is a gigantic advantage for the 1 seed.
