I've heard Lakers rumors as well. At the end of of the day, if the Bulls offer him the max the minute FA opens, I'm certain he'll resign. If the Bulls try to mess around and lowball him, he'll go exploring FA even if the Bulls ultimately offer him the max. If you want to be sure to keep Zach, don't mess around.... he has made it clear that he's looking for the respect of a max level contract.

Is there any other rumors that should have us concerned about him leaving other than the vague Blazers may offer him a contract rumor?

The Cubs last rebuild felt like it took forever but it only took 3 years after Theo took over to build a contender. If you consider this year 1 - equivalent to 2012, lets look at what the Cubs had in assets by this point in the rebuild: -On the major league team they had 1 cornerstone piece in Anthony Rizzo and a 2015 bullpen arm in Travis Wood. -In the minors, only 2 of their top 40 prospects actually contributed to the 2015-2016 Cubs - Javy and Matt Szczur -They had the pieces that would eventually be traded for Arrieta, Strop, Fowler, 1/2 of Addison Russell, Hendricks, Carl Edwards, Grimm and Neil Ramirez (probably missing some) -Farm system was ranked around 15-20 in baseball Curious to see how we compare with what we have right now. Obviously a bit hard to say because we don't know how guys like Davis will ultimately look in the majors and we have no idea what we can get for a lot of the veterans on the staff but it seems like we're in a similar position, maybe slightly better now. Definitely seems like another 2-3 years to get to the point of contention on the surface. You said yourself that that team had the pieces to trade for Arrieta, Strop, Fowler, Hendricks, Russell, Edwards, Grimm, etc. Where are the tradable pieces on this team? We are miles behind the situation in 2012 and we don't have Theo's competence to save us. Pieces traded for these players were Scott Feldman, Steve Clevenger, Luis Valbuena, Jeff Samardzija, Jason Hammel (not on 2012 Cubs), and Ryan Dempster. This years Cubs team could theoretically trade Hendricks, Smyly, Miley, Robertson, Givens, Coldplay dude, Contreras, Happ, Villar and Frazier. Not saying they would trade all of them or that they would all get as much value as they got from the guys mentioned in 2012 (FO had a ridiculously high hit rate on trades), but they definitely have enough tradeable pieces on the team.

All actual spending that happens is explained as farming for trades until they meet that marker, regardless of how little sense that might actually make compared to more sensible explanations. It's just Ricketts anger all the way down regardless of topic or circumstance, your worldview has been made clear. There were clear opportunities to upgrade in free agency. The schedule has been fairly difficult so there's a possibility the team is better than the 54-108 pace they are currently on. But at the same time this team is clearly going to be dismantled at the deadline so it might even get worse, though I find it hard to believe it can get worse.

Opposing starters the last 8 games Kyle Wright - 1.74 ERA Adrian Houser - 3.42 ERA Eric Lauer - 1.82 ERA Corbin Burnes - 1.86 ERA Michael Kopech - 1.17 ERA Lucas Giolito - 3.20 ERA Clayton Kershaw - 1.80 ERA Tyler Anderson - 2.78 ERA Burnes, Giolito, and Kershaw are legit stars. Wright and Lauer are the breakouts of the year, and the other three are all solid while just kind of on a heater right now. The Braves, Brewers, Sox, and Dodgers also rank 3rd, 2nd, 6th, and 5th in bullpen WAR, so things didn't exactly get easier in the late innings. I’d buy that more if they didn’t get completely shut down by every pitcher they’ve faced in that stretch. They can’t be anything but a bad offense if they can only hit bad pitching.

Do we just not know how to teach offense? I know our players are garbage but it seems like no matter what we do a Cubs offense can’t help but fail with RISP. At least our strikeout numbers are (slightly) down? Good stuff Jed

Dodgers started two lefties yesterday. Rivas has generally taken Ortega's PA's since he came back up. I get that Ross is still managing like the Cubs are competing but with the way things are trending he needs to shake up things up. 3 runs or less in 13 of 15 games, you’d think you want to try to give extra ABs to one of the few players hitting well instead of giving them to AAAA players who had 2 good months last year and turned back into pumpkins
