  1. Split a series we needed to win. Now have the Yankees and Red Sox for 6.
  2. How is Yelich decent again? Very frustrating development as it was fun making fun of the Brewers for that contract
  3. I want something more urgent. I'm down with Mervis long term but the time to be aggressive is now. I have no idea who is out there but if we can grab someone that has a track record of production and doesn't crap all over themselves defensively at 1B, I'm all for it.
  4. Jed should suck it up and find a 1B or 3B in the trade market like today. You can still be a seller if it doesn't pan out, but if Jed really does want to be a buyer as badly as he's implied, be aggressive and help your team get over the hump so that you can be a full buyer at the end of the month. Wouldn't be the first time a team bought and then ended up selling.
  5. Have to think the blister is still bothering him. I mean its also possible that he's not a 2.28 ERA pitcher based on his long track record of pitching and its a regression, but the fact that the slide started the game he had the blister and he didn't even miss his turn in the rotation makes me believe that its at least some of the blame. Hope the Cubs win this one but tough to beat a decent team 4 times in a road on the road. They had their 3rd win that they needed in the series on Monday and pissed it away.
  6. It does help that, per Tankathon the Cubs have the easiest remaining schedule in the National League and it's not even particularly close. 10 of the 11 easiest remaining schedules are AL teams, the Cubs being the one NL team
  7. Yes and no...with the rate the Reds are winning right now they are catching up to teams like the the DBacks for the 2nd best division leader (2 GB) and are right in line with 2 of the 3 WC teams right now. But if you consider the fact that they have still been outscored for the season and the Cubs are the only team with a positive RD, then yes we should be in first by 3-4 games. Really hoping the Reds upcoming stretch slows them down. 3 at MIL, 3 vs MIL, 4 vs SF, 3 vs ARI, 3 at MIL, 3 at CHC.
  8. Everyone said the Cubs needed to win 3 of 4 in this series to keep their season going. Maybe the calculus has changed a bit since the Reds are refusing to lose again, but they are in a position to do that. Either they win 3 of 4 or they lament the blown 6 run lead on Monday. Current positioning: 6.0 GB the Giants/Phillies in the WC (also behind Milwaukee and tied with San Diego) 7.0 GB the Reds in the NL Central. The Reds have 6 straight against the Brewers after this series (wrapped around the All-Star break), so they can gain ground on both teams. Though unfortunately the Cubs are playing the Yankees next who they are 4-23 all time against and have never won at either Yankee Stadium (0-12/0-8 in interleague play). Not that what happened in 1932 has anything to do with this year, I just like to point out the absurdity of this record.
  9. Iron Will (this is the Fremd football team's slogan of which Tauchman was a member)
  10. Kind of strange to see Yelich ease up on Tauchman's hit. Feels like he could have caught it.
  11. I havent checked the standings in awhile because the Cubs have been bad so I was starting to celebrate being 5 games out of first with a chance to make it 4 GB tomorrow. Then I realized the Reds have been winning a lot and we're actually 7 GB
  12. Cubs win! Do the last 2 games make up for the blown 6-0 lead? If we win tomorrow definitely
  13. Agreed. I get that the FO doesn't want to tank, but I'd like to see them at least shop DeRozan to some contenders. DeRozan seems like a heavy usage guy on the Bulls put he's proven before he can still be successful in a lower usage role. There has to be at least a couple of contenders that see DeRozan as a piece to put them over the top and are willing to overlook things like age and remainder on contract because they want to win now. There's really not a huge benefit to the Bulls hanging onto DeRozan and letting his contract expire, nor is there a huge benefit to an extension. Perhaps AKME is looking at the deadline as a better time to move him, but I'd like to break up the Zach/DeMar/Vuc big three and try to reinvent this team as a team with more shooters and tough defenders.
  14. Nico with a better line drive rate would be freaking scary. But to get to that point you probably end up messing with his contact rate or other areas that he is currently strong at (I think?). Castro's hitting profile with better defense and baserunning seems fair.
  15. Ahh yes, RE24 is something I've come across before but haven't looked into very deeply. Definitely seems like, similar to WPA, is not really predictive of future results as there is still a widespread belief that "clutch hitting" is not really a skill. But it does seem to show Nico in a very positive light this year.
  16. Have to win both of these games so its a good thing Steele and Stroman are on the hill. Hopefully they can each give 6-7 solid innings because I think our bullpen is a bit taxed and already not that good to begin with.
  17. Question for the stats guys: How do you quantify Nico Hoerner's value from an offensive standpoint? Meaning, I heard a lot of buzz about Nico being a borderline All-Star this year and to be honest when I saw Nico come up in the 11th inning yesterday with a man on 3rd, I felt good about it on a team that lacks a ton of options that you want to see up there in a high leverage situation. Obviously a large amount of his value comes on the defensive side, but I also think that more often that not Nico has good at bats, doesn't seem to press in high leverage spots and has good contact skills. But when you look at traditional baseball stats, or basic "advanced stats" or even some of the legit advanced stats out there, he looks like a slightly below average offensive player, despite both FG and BR showing him as a net positive (I think). His wOBA is slightly below average at .318, his OPS+ is 98, his wRC+ is 99. Maybe my premise is faulty and he's really just an average offensive player with elite defensive skills, but for some reason I cant shake the fact that his relatively high BA and low K rate make him more valuable than advanced stats can show. Am I off here?
  18. Of course, imitators and variations are showing up. If anyone is interested in a football version: https://dynasty-daddy.com/gridiron Note: apparently, the player data pool is only guys who have played in the 1999-2022 seasons Personally, I'm not sure how good I can be at a football version. Baseball and maybe basketball are the 2 sports I can do this and have a shot to get 9/9
  19. It's a good thing we ended up winning the group to avoid Guatemala (FIFA rank 116) and instead get to feast on Canada (rank 45). I know I know, this is a depthless Canada's B team and they've looked pretty weak this tournament but still funny how it works out.
  20. I know there are only 30 teams, meaning there are only (I think) 435 combinations of 2 teams you can choose so repeats will happen, but I'm surprised that there are 2 repeats today that were both in the June 21st edition. And all 3 teams involved (Cubs, Orioles, Mariners) are in the same exact spot on the board as they were June 21st. When I first saw it today I thought for a second I accidentally got the old one showing up.
  21. Pre-Manfred Man it would have to be something where a pitcher comes into the game with a bases loaded, 0 out situation, gets a triple play (or a double play and a caught stealing/pickoff) and then retires the side the next inning. Seems pretty unlikely its happened before but not impossible.
