Now that the perfect game is over, lets appreciate what Smyly has done after a really rough first start. Last 3 starts, all against playoff teams from last year and this is what he's done:
18.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 20 K
Will Ross extend him enough to finish? 93 pitches so far. I'm assuming if he makes it through the 8th under like 110 pitches he'll get a shot to finish
Maybe Mancini at least is heating up. Definitely can't keep him down much longer though. Multiple news stories today suggest its not happening anytime soon though.
I didn't watch the first 2 innings due to work. Turned it on bottom 3rd ready to see some offense. Got a work call so turned off the stream when the first 2 batters got out. Turned it back on to see the replay of Mancini's HR.
I think I should keep the rest of the game off.
Everyone gave up on him, and many quite early on last year. He did suck and I didn't really care if he was phased out over the offseason, but this is more what we hoped for when the trade was made. I don't think he'll finish with a 131 wRC+ or anything close but he could definitely be a useful piece if used properly. The problem is he doesn't really have a position right now.
I didn't mind at all the idea of signing Fulmer and putting him a high leverage role. And I still think Fulmer will be fine. Just move him to a 7th inning role and let him get right. Just not sure who closes games for the Cubs/pitches in their highest leverage situations.
I think Jameson Williams is the only Lions player of note to be suspended. They already released 2 of the other guys who are suspended, and the other one they didnt release seems like a special teams guy and not one that played a ton last year.
But losing Williams will hurt...he only played a tiny bit at the end of the year, now will probably be out 6 games to start his 2nd year. Bad value on a player they traded up to draft in the 1st round.
