  1. Game is in a rain delay, expected to start at 12:45 ct
  2. Jordan Wicks scratched from today's start, reportedly non-injury related PCA also not in Iowa's lineup but is still with the team so probably not a call up. Wicks might be.
  3. i wish there was a reaction button for 'wtf are you on about now tom?'
  4. I mean Ross heavily implied postgame that he's starting again on Sunday. That doesn't mean he ultimately will but your article speaks of certainty that Smyly is done starting and I'm not convinced that's the case yet.
  5. Now 5 teams within 1 game of each other for 2 playoff spots.
  6. Actually that's pretty brilliant of Ross. Gonna lose anyways, might as well throw Smyly out there.
  7. I mentioned earlier that Ross in the PG presser all but confirmed he’s starting on Sunday. He said something about giving him some grace.
  8. So instead of trading Alonso to the Cubs, they kept him and he single-handedly won the Mets 2 games against the Cubs. Good stuff. I'm not a huge Alonso fan at least relative to others, I like him and would happily take him but he'd be below Ohtani and Bellinger on my offseason priority list, especially knowing it would take prospect capital to acquire him.
  9. For this one, they finally get rid of Brent Seabrook's (yes seriously) LTIR hold of $6.875m after this season. Hagel's extension starts after this year so it fits right in.
  10. Meh you are probably right but 5-2 is reasonable to me when 5 of those games are against teams a combined 60 games under .500 and the Cubs have been facing nothing but starters with ERAs over 5 for the last 5 games
  11. Maybe...he's only really affected 1 start so far, tonight right? Not that the Cubs should have expected to go 7-0 in this stretch but 4-3 is probably below expectations. They haven't been playing well lately, but have been fortunate enough to bank wins. They may have banked this one too if the Cubs had another option at SP. The true frustrating part is the Diamondbacks went from one of the worst teams in baseball to unbeatable overnight. And the Rangers have probably cost the Cubs 10% in playoff odds over the last week.
  12. Ross basically confirmed that Smyly would make his next start
  13. Rangers losing yet again to Arizona 3-0 Reds down 2-1 to the Angels Marlins lead the Padres 1-0 Brewers beating Twins 7-3 Other than SF losing and maybe Cincinnati its a nearly a worst case scenario night. Was really hoping we'd put some distance between us and the WC race during this stretch of games against bad teams while our competition is mostly playing good teams instead we're going to be right where we started, tied for WC3 and 2 games farther back in the division
  14. I know he still pitched ok for a bit after that but I'm going to pretend Yan Gomes ruined him.
  15. Tom you’re being ridiculous. Of course literally anyone else the Cubs could have pitched tonight would have pitched a perfect game.
  16. Depends, does Not Smyly have a 9.41 ERA in his previous 8 starts and already allowed 4 runs and 9 baserunners in the first 3.1 IP? You act like no starting pitcher in the history of ever has had a short leash due to a very poor stretch of pitching or was pulled early in a game where they are getting hit hard and often. The fact that both applied to Smyly doesn't cancel them out.
  17. Yeah that honestly irks me more than starting Smyly. I have no idea when pitchers started getting warm that inning but after watching him the first 3 innings, I would have had a really short leash. I get it...Ross needs him to eat innings. But Smyly had nothing tonight and the Cubs still managed to lead the game. I get that it sounds reactionary, maybe in another timeline Smyly gets a ground ball there. Or Bellinger scoops up Candelario's throw before that. Either way, by that point Smyly seemed like a blowup waiting to happen and it happened.
  18. Any idea if it was contact or non contact?
  19. I think that guarantees that the Cubs will remain in a playoff spot tonight. Even if Arizona and Miami win and tie up the Cubs, the Cubs will be percentage points ahead of Arizona, though Miami will win the H2H tiebreaker thus jump into WC2
  20. You pick one tiny tidbit to correct and then fold your arms and say "there argument won!" OK fine, but people have still been talking for a week about hating the decision to start Smyly. Now you'll probably come back triumphantly and point out that Smyly wasn't even announced as the starter until Sunday so the entire argument I made is wrong
  21. Burning through the heart of our pen during Royals series may not have cost us yesterday's game or today's game but it certainly made things a lot more dicier both nights. At the very least everyone important has had at least 1 day off coming into tomorrow. Guessing they'll prefer to avoid Leiter if they can given that he pitched 3 straight days before this but everyone else should be good to go.
  22. Considering Smyly was able to last 5 innings in just 2 of his last 9 starts, its not impossible but not very likely either. You are talking about reactionary comments when people have been openly questioning the decision to start Smyly on this board since it was announced. There was even an article written about it.
