  1. Terrance Metcalf was suspended 4 games for violating the leagues anabolic steroids policy. Not much depth at LG now.
  2. That HR reminded me of Ward's HR versus the Marlins. :( I'm still not ready to remember individual season moments.
  3. Cubs started out 1-3 and the Brewers 3-1 and we turned out ok. Different sports, different season lengths, different spread between good and bad teams. I'm just saying, if the fans go away because of 3 bad games, then whatever. 3 games is nothing. If they went 0-2-1 in the middle of the season no one would blink an eye. They don't *have* the fans though. They are trying to get them. There is a buzz about this team right now, and a bad start can take that away. I hear ya. They'll come back if they start winning though. I kinda had a feeling this is the kinda start we would get. Typical Chicago sports team that can't live up to any sort of hype.
  4. That reminds me of just about every Matt Stairs AB vs. the Cubs. He killed that.

  7. I don't know tons about hockey, but his approach to the penalty shots looked horrible. He wasn't set in time. On the other hand, the Kane and Havlat seemed to be trying to be too creative.
  8. Hawks lose 3-2. At least we got a point?
  9. This is the first time I've been able to watch any sort of NL baseball since the Cubs got eliminated. I think I finally am able to enjoy baseball to a certain degree again.
  10. At least he's not having 8-13 132 yard 0 TD games. This is slightly more exciting.
  11. Yes. It is not just my estimation though. I guess that's the debate. It's a meta-debate. Why would people not think Santo is worthy for the HOF. There are the arguments I've heard: 1. No WS victories 2. O_O's one 3. People didn't like him 4. Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, and Ernie Banks are already in. That's it. If one goes by the standards by which players are judged, he's in. He's not border line. And the arguments/numbers posted in the article from the original post have no value? I am not saying you are wrong, I just want to hear your thoughts since you have a decided opinion on the topic
  12. See now that makes sense why stupid writers wouldn't vote for him if he got that reputation.
  13. Why not? I love playing devil's advocate. It causes you to step out of your bias and look at things from a different perspective. Sometimes there are two sides and sometimes there are not two sides. The only debate would be is if Santo was the best 3rd baseman of his era or the 2nd best. Either way, he deserves to be in the HOF. So in your estimation, there is 0 room for debate? The other 60% of the people that didn't vote for him in previous HOF votes (pre-veterans committee) didn't vote for him soley because he was a jerk?

  15. Michigan 24 Penn State 21 10 years in a row! Haha, actually any excitement that I had about Michigan possibly pulling off another upset went away when Michigan lost to Toledo (TOLEDO) and Penn State completely annihilated our biggest win of the season.
  16. I've never heard of Santo being a jerk when he played. That's interesting, can you enlighten me? If you read the whole article, he brings up the point of win shares of the 1960s. This is what he said about the win shares: I'm just playing devil's advocate here though. That article is probably the most convincing I've read as to why he shouldn't be in the HOF, but not nearly enough to change my mind.
  17. As long as we frontload it. I'd prefer to pay him this way: Year 1: $50 million Year 2: $60 million Year 3: $1.25 million Year 4: $1.25 million Year 5: $1.25 million Year 6: $1.25 million
  18. I just read 2 pretty good articles regarding Ron Santo's HOF candidacy. One was for Santo in the HOF and one was against it. I figure with the postseason failures still causing bitterness, we'll switch topics and discuss something that will come up before the next Cubs game. For Santo: http://www.dugoutcentral.com/blog/?p=1919 Excerpt: Against Santo: http://www.dugoutcentral.com/blog/?p=1933 Excerpt: I'm guessing 99% of posters here (myself included) support Santo in the HOF, but lets try to have a balanced discussion, with some playing devil's advocate and making points for both arguments.
  19. Just read that Tony Romo broke his pinkie and will be out for 4 weeks. Brad Johnson is their backup. What a blow for the Cowboys.
  20. Playing on wild card weekend might be their only chance of actually winning a playoff game. The Bears still play New Orleans at home in December, have 5 games left vs their own division, and a game with STL. They can still go 9-3 against the NFC with wins against two playoff contenders in New Orleans and Philly (plus GB/MIN). I won't believe we can't win a game until we get blown out of one. Obviously we are far from the most talented team in the conference, but since we've been in every game, against some good teams its hard to say we can't win a divisional playoff game. We've played a pretty tough schedule. 4/6 on the road against teams with a combined record of 18-16 (18-11 if you throw out the Detroit game..which you can't, but they really kill that record with their ineptitude)
  21. People say that Hester isn't the same because he's focusing of offense...yadda yadda. I think Hester isn't the same because he's not getting the same gaps to run through. I think Ayanbedjo was a much bigger loss than anyone realizes. This ST is just not the same...I don't know if one player makes that much of a difference, but so far, it appears it does. There was a reason he was called the human wedge and made multiple pro bowls as a Special Teamer. Only 1 Special Teams player from each conference makes the Pro Bowl, and Ayanbadejo was named the last 2 years. Thats 1 player out of maybe 200 dedicated Special Teams players from each conference. He was good, and he was so good he was able to stand out amongst 200 people, so he clearly made a difference. He was also one of the Bears captains last year, meaning he obviously had a role on the team beyond his play on the field. Anyway you slice it he was a huge loss.
  22. The other thing that sucks about this loss is that it makes it a lot harder to get a first round bye if somehow we got it together and were in contention for one. Assuming the NFC West won't have a bye and assuming the winner of the NFC East will get a bye, that leaves the North and South battling for a bye. The Bears have already lost to 3 of the 4 NFC South teams, ensuring if we tie any of them for a bye, we won't get it.
  23. Hopefully you aren't a Blackhawks fan so far, then. And hopefully you're not a Bulls fan for the next few months... Chicago sucks this winter :( And last winter. The last Chicago sports playoff win was in May of 07 by the Bulls (I don't count the White Sox since none of us care about them)
  24. That's a good call. We need to have a serious discussion about our special teams. The past 3 years we had the best Special Teams unit in the league. According to Football Outsiders, I think the 2006 squad had the 2nd best special teams unit in the past 15 years based on their ratings. Now, its still somehow in the top half of the league, but its not the same at all. For a team that can't make many errors like the Bears, good special teams play is a must. What is it about the special teams that has made it worse? Is it because Ayanbadejo left? Is it because Hester is running around on offense and returning kicks? Is it just natural because Special Teams is made up of your backup players, and not enough thought is put into choosing personnel that can maximize special teams play? Dave Toub was highly regarded as the best ST coach in the league, its time for him to prove it.
