By my count 19 MLB teams have now committed more total $$ in a contract than the Cubs ($184m) Not that this is the end all be all or that the Cubs wouldn't offer a larger contract especially to a young player like Witt Jr. It's just interesting.

No I was responding to the initial post about looking to trade Nico if Morel hits well. Nico is 26 and had a 5.1 bWAR/4.7 fWAR last year and has a very reasonable contract for the next 3 years.

lol I believe I proposed a NE trade a few pages ago where the Bears were giving up more and was told it was not enough. That’s way more than not enough. Based on the Jimmy Johnson calculator the difference between 1.03 and 1.09 is roughly equal to 1.20. This trade is saying that Fields is worth more than 1.20 (given that NE is also giving up a 4th and 2025 3rd and 5th for a Bears 6th). Lmao

So far we've gotten a starter with an elevated HR rate, a 1B who has never hit in the majors and a reliever with a sky high walk rate and a velo drop last year. I'd say our WS contender is just about built.

Id be interested in knowing how many of those games were blown in late August - October specifically since it seemed like the Cubs had a pretty lock down pen for a good 3 months but were heavily relying on Fulmer, Leiter, Merryweather, Alzolay, then Fulmer went down, Alzolay went down, Leiter completely tanked and the last 3 weeks of the season we had no horsefeathers idea who was going to get the outs needed to finish off a game (other that we knew Cuas was going to pitch almost every game). Was it because of overwork? Not sure but the pen was super thin beyond those 3 guys (and Ross's reluctance to try guys like Little down the stretch). If the numbers are as I suspect (but could be wrong) this is still a problem that needs to be addressed. It's great that you can identify 3ish lockdown relievers from scraps but I imagine the lack of bullpen depth beyond those guys was a big factor in the late season slide and finishing 1 game out of a playoff spot. Would seem foolish to not make at least one decent investment in a reliever. Edit: Just did some research: 7 of the 30 blown lead losses (23.3%) came in the final 22 games of the season (13.5% of the season). This doesn't include blown leads that we still managed to win of which there were a few in that stretch as well.

2019 - The only major league contract we signed was Descalso and we spent the entire offseason deluded into believing the Cubs were a player for Bryce Harper even though zero reports linked us to him and several local guys reported we weren’t in contact with him at all. -

Yeah I think I get it for guys like Bellinger. Boras is basically waiting for a team to blink but if the Cubs are supposedly still 3-4 transactions away from completing their offseason I'm not sure why there's no movement on relievers or other areas of need.

Will Wade could turn the program around in 2 years but DePaul has virtually zero NIL program and almost no willing donors so I don't think he'd come here. There is a report that DePaul is going to spend big on the next coach but again the same problems exist in that there is no enthusiasm for the program at all and without enthusiasm there is no NIL and with no NIL, no one is going to want to play here. In this current era its going to be tough. No NIL makes it tough to recruit and retain players. If you hire a coach that is great at developing players, most likely those players just bolt when they get interest from blue bloods.
