  1. Which is why the pen and locking up this offense is key. Both Zambrano and Harden have shown enough to where if the Cubs face one of those 3 (they have the potential stuff to win against then), but it's more likely they'll win by hanging around and beating them in a battle of pens rather than counting on the SP going 8/9 giving up 2 or less regardless of who it is. The Cubs have as much rotation depth as anyone 1-4 but they can't compete in terms of matching up once the starter is done given how bad this pen is. Very valid point. The bullpen looks to be a much much bigger concern at this point. Who knows what our resources are for improving the team anyways.
  2. What about 2005 when they had complete game after complete game when it mattered most Huh? I started talking about the Cubs pitchers in the second paragraph. .
  3. You act like last year was a fluke year, yet he's had 3 seasons of over .900 OPS, and had a 1.004 OPS with the Padres of all teams in the 42 games he played there. Come on. You can't just say "he's had 3 season with an OPS over .900." In 2007 he had only 144 at-bats. In 2003 he had 377. Last year he had 414. That's not even 2 full seasons worth of at-bats, let alone 3. Bottom line is he has a career .823 OPS in like 3,000 at-bats. I just don't understand why everybody was so sure he'd be awesome. I though he'd be pretty good, but not some middle of the lineup force. Come on we're talking about Milton Vradley here. 300 ABs is a season for him. You can rip on some of his sub-.800 OPS seasons (which happened quite awhile ago) with the same arguments. He has put up better numbers than .823 more recently in his career. I don't think anyone thought we were getting Albert Pujols here or even Aramis Ramirez. Just a switch hitting bat who can hit .850+ from both sides of the plate.
  4. Kenny Williams is such a moron. And while starting pitching might not be a big problem this year, do you really trust any of our starters to hold their own against Santana, Hamels, Billinsley in a playoff series. None of our starters have shown shutdown ability this year or even consistantly over their careers.
  5. You are taking pleasure in Wood's struggles...why?
  6. With the loss today, the Brewers only have to go 92-30 to get to that illustrious 117 win mark.
  7. You act like last year was a fluke year, yet he's had 3 seasons of over .900 OPS, and had a 1.004 OPS with the Padres of all teams in the 42 games he played there. He's not completely a product of Ballpark in Arlington, he's a solid player. Yet I can't explain why he's been so bad this year. Also, I know I'm just cherry picking pitchers here, but these are solid pitchers: Pitcher....Career OPS....#PAs Brandon Webb - 1.493 (28 PA) Josh Beckett - .911 (18 PA) Roy Oswalt - 1.250 (10 PA) Jose Valverde - 1.786 (8 PA) Johan Santana - 3.500 (2 PA) CC Sabathia - .871 (11 PA) Erik Bedard - 1.815 (13 PA) Chris Carpenter (before tonight) - .900 (10 PA) So yeah..some of the sample sizes are quite small, but you get a good enough idea that Bradley doesn't just make a living hitting bad pitchers.
  8. That's cool, but I'm sick of movies about the Cubs futility and the eternal hope of Cubs fans being made. I would bet the fans are sick of it too. I saw Chasing October (documentary following the 2003 season) and I just wanted to punch everyone in the theater and myself thinking about what might have been. I suspect this movie will do the same. The only way I'll see this is during a 7+ game winning streak where my Cub angst is low.
  9. At least Derrek Lee is leaving the Axis of Evil (Bradley, Fontenot and Soto are still in it) with his 1.100 OPS over the last 7 games.
  10. Well despite the ~12 years of apathy here, we've been following this sport in Chicago for quite awhile. That knowledge doesn't just go away over the course of a decade.
  11. And the chances of all those players reaching their potential in the Cubs org is 0.00000001%. When we did the same thing in 2003 with Kelton, Hill, Choi, Prior, Beltran, Cruz, etc etc those prospects were much higher regarded than our current guys and look how they turned out.
  12. Reacquiring DeRosa would mean that Hendry admits that he shouldn't have traded him away, no matter the circumstances that bring him back here. I can't see Hendry sending that message.
  13. Dempster has allowed more than 4 ERs in exactly half of his starts this year including against the offensively challenged Dbacks and these same St. Louis Cardinals.
  14. It's not like he's never played in the AL before though.
  15. Team that scores first, Result: R1G1: Flames, L R1G2: Flames, L R1G3: Hawks, L R1G4: Hawks, L R1G5: Hawks, W R1G6: Hawks, W 2-4 R2G1: Canucks, W R2G2: Canucks, L R2G3: Canucks, W R2G4: Canucks, L R2G5: Hawks, W R2G6: Canucks, L 3-3 R3G1: Hawks, L R3G2: Hawks, L 0-2 5-9 Record for the team that scores first in a playoff game with the Hawks involved. It's probably a coincidence, but its a bizarre one.
  16. That's what happens when one team has only 28 PAs in the entire game.
  17. They are going to resign Hossa right?
  18. I'm still astounded that any Hawks fans actually wanted to face Detroit. Even ignoring the difference in quality between the the Ducks and the Red Wings, the Ducks' style of play is exactly what the Hawks are built to beat. We could have skated around their D and their offense isn't good enough to take advantage of our turnovers defensively. Exactly...who knows how the 08-09 Blackhawks season would have ended had Anaheim somehow pulled out that series. Would have probably been a Finals appearance and when you get that far against Pittsburgh or Carolina, who knows what would have happened.
  19. Anyone else wish that Anaheim had won Game 7? This series was doomed from the start. This series is starting to remind me of the 95 Conference Finals against Detroit. A bunch of close games that go to the Wings.
  20. I think we'll take game 3 and lose the rest. Of course that's what I said before the series. So far, so good unfortunately :(
  21. Anyone? I can't stand possibly missing the start of OT, and I have no way of knowing when it starts.
  22. There'd be days like this my mama said. Hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow. I expect a fake rally in the 9th.
  23. How long is the intermission between 3rd period and OT? I need to head back to the bar when the game restarts because I don't get VS at my house. In fact can someone consciously post here when OT is about to start so I know. Thanks
  24. Next year is our year! You can't get too upset. The Wings are just better. Sure I was hoping that I was dead wrong and somehow we could upset them, but even the most optimistic fan had to expect 2 Ls in Detroit (followed by 2 W's in Chicago). Remember that it's not a series until someone loses at home. 2-0 doesn't bother me.
