  1. We've had a lot of interesting times rooting for heart attack inducing closers in the past...but rooting for Gregg is about the worst thing I've ever done. You know he's going to throw at least a couple of meatballs in each appearance, and he's gonna be horribly wild to at least 1-2 batters, you just have to basically brace and hope the hitter screws up on the meatballs, and the hitters become undisciplined on the wild abs. Seriously, you have to root for the other team to screw up, not for our guy to get outs.
  2. I hesitate to criticise someone that is protecting his head from a baseball coming at them at 100+ MPH, but couldn't he have stuck a glove up?
  3. Because of some fishing trip Dusty Baker went on in the 70's or something.
  4. In case Gregg coughs it up, lets preemptively assign the biggest blame of the game (I know, I'm feeling mighty positive tonight...for a game we are winning, I am seeing a lot of negatives) A) Marmol B) Gregg (presumably in the 9th) C) The offense as a whole D) Soriano (offensively and defensively) E) The offenses situational hitting F) The Reds are just better.
  5. That's a silly reason to not like it. What don't you get? The Pirates season was thrown away the minute it started. Seriously they weren't going to do anything. And McClouth wasn't the guy who was going to determine if they ever returned to contender status. The Pirates season ended the moment Bonds and Bonilla left town. Too bad the Pirates dont have any money. Imagine them with Aramis Ramirez, Bay, Nady, McClouth, Freddy Sanchez, LaRoche, and Ryan Doumit. The NL Central could have spent a lot of years looking up at them Yeah umm... have you ever seen that Ashton Kutcher movie called "Butterfly Effect"?
  6. I'd be a bit worried if the Cardinals got Holliday.
  7. Seriously. Actually no offense, I can't believe a die hard Hawks fan would be cheering for the Wings. I'm sure you understand what I'm saying. As an example from another sport, you could have threatened my life and I still would have cheered against the Packers in the 2007 NFC Championship game. There was nothing that would get me to root for the Packers.
  8. Really crappy outcome for Orlando tonight, but it doesn't kill their chances of winning the series. If they shoot even decently they have a very close game. I'll be willing to bet Game 2 is very close.
  9. Did anyone else see that Comcast report tonight that Havlat might be willing to take a hometown discount to stay with the Hawks, and that they have already started talking and a deal could be reached as soon as next week? If that's true, it's good news I think. I just hope he doesn't turn into the Havlat before this year.
  10. Blech, gonna have to burn an off day later this month and come all the way to Atlanta to play a game. The Braves must hate this. They have a span where they play 3 @ Boston, 1 vs. Cubs, 3 vs. NYY, 3 vs. Boston, 3 vs. Philly
  11. I've been seeing people call him fat all year, but personally I didn't see much weight gain at all. I kept quiet though figuring people were seeing things I wasn't.
  12. I personally think that unless the sale gets done before mid-July the Cubs will have 0 financial assets to improve the team with.
  13. If we signed Plax, I'd feel really good about our chances next year (assuming Plax isn't suspended any games). We improved the QB position, we made the RB's life much easier, we'd have signed a legitimate pro bowl caliber WR pushing Hester in a role he can excel. We most likely greatly improved the offensive line (I am never 100% confident when there are several new additions to the line). Defensively, we signed a pretty good LB to compliment Briggs and Urlacher, speaking of Urlacher, reports are that he is looking as healthy as he's been in the last few years. We added some depth at S and should have enough options to have 2 solid players to start, but this is one of the areas that still worries me. The other area is the Dline and while we did improve, I am not sure how much. Put that altogether, and the team's goal should be more than just make the playoffs. And I don't think the national media is going to see all this until its too late, although if they sign Plax they could jump on the bandwagon pretty quickly. Now someone bring me down to earth...why shouldn't I be this optimistic about next season's Bears team?
  14. We're in America. Innocent until proven guilty? I agree, I'm 99% sure Sosa did steroids, but is it fair to penalize him and lump him with confirmed steroid users when there is absolutely no proof that suggests he ever touched steroids.
  15. Jurrjens is a stud this year. Let's hope Z is on his game.
  16. i am not going to pretend to know diddly squat about the pirates minor league system, but i honestly hope you are exaggerating for the team's sake... that is a bloody long time to not put a decent product on the field, surely they can't be but about 5-7 years away at the most, no? I dunno, the Pirates farm system is probably like middle of the road, but the point is, unless a bunch of their prospects happen to hit at the same time, none of the players they develop are going to be around long enough to help the Pirates get to .500 for a season. So its really just waiting for the year that the perfect storm hits and they get lucky. But who knows, the Pirates GM is still relatively new enough to be implementing his plan for the team.
  17. McClouth is a bit overrated. Good hitter, below average fielder. A nice complimentary player for a contender, but no star. His value will probably never be as high as it is right now. The only thing that bothers me is that he has several years until he's arb-eligable, so why trade him now when he is a building block if the Pirates ever improve. I know their farm system isn't there yet, but at some point, you need to let your players develop through good and bad and hopefully reap the benefits of it down the road. If I was a Pirates fan, I'd be worried that they'd finally get a bunch of superb prospects to develop, and the team trades a few pieces to the puzzle a year too early, and the Pirates stay in mediocrity forever. Honestly when do you see the Pirates being at least a .500 team again? 2020? longer? They are so far away even after 16+ years of losing seasons.
  18. Bad teams would rather invest playing time on a prospect that makes $400k than spend $10 million on a stopgap 42 year old player or however old he is. Especially in this economy. That's why players like Sosa, Bonds, Edmonds, etc. have had trouble getting jobs in the last 2 years, although in Bonds' case there were other reasons as well.
  19. He did say it while laughing.
  20. He has had few at bats and was given quick runs against premiere SP. He had a .474 OPS since May 20th but that's over a very sporatic 28 ABs. I am not worried, he seem to be a solid .775/.825 hitter which people should be ecstatic that we could pull a player like that off the scrap heap of the Cubs farm system. Then again, an AB from Hoff is a AB taken away from Fox for the most part.
  21. Tough matchup vs. Jurjens, but if Z steps it up we can win it. Z hasn't really had any of his dominant stretches this year like he tends to.
  22. Gregg actually tends to wait until there's 2 outs to blow it. I'm calling a Prado walk followed by a 600 foot Francoer homerun on a fastball that he shouldn't see. I don't even think Francoeur was even still in the game at that point.
  23. Cubs win! We had it all along. First 1-2-3 save of the year for Gregg?
  24. Ouch...a bit harsh dontcha think? Where I come from, calling someone worse than Miles is askin for a beating.
