  1. Well, the fact of the matter is, if we can't win those games, we are not good enough to be a playoff team. It would make me feel better knowing that it wasn't because we blew a lot of winnable games, or that the schedules were unfair. Basically, the Cubs just came off an easy stretch where we won a ton of games and the Cardinals had a harder stretch where they played all good teams. In that stretch the Cubs gained around 3 games and took a slight lead in the division. Now the schedules have reversed and the Cubs are playing the tough teams while the Cardnials are playing cupcakes. Now theyve gotten those 3 games right back. It's the ups and downs of the season. The crappy part is, its hard to not get too excited when we have a run and took first place, and not to get down when we lose 3 games in 4 days.
  2. BTW, how come the Rockies pitchers know how to pitch with a big lead, when our guys struggle at times?
  3. This is totally the exact opposite of the Houston series at Wrigley. We just got stomped. The good news: It's 4 games. We ran into a hot team playing on the road at a park where they play very very well. The bad news: The Cardinals won all 4 of their games while we went 1-3. We now play the Phillies and if we don't snap out of this, we're in trouble because the Reds aren't going to help us, they suck. Now is time to see what this team is made of. In the previous 2 years when their backs are to the wall, they fall flat on their faces or run and hide (Florida series in '07, playoffs in '07, '08). Sure its possible for the Cubs to recover even if we don't play well, but the odds will significantly decline if we lose 2 of 3 or get swept by Philly. So while these aren't must wins, they are as close to that as you can get in August.
  4. Hopefully Lou is the one getting canned If the Cubs don't make the post-season, I think Lou will hang it up. Hendry is the one I want canned no matter what. I think he'll privately ask what sort of offseason plan jim has and what sort of resourses they have to achieve the plan and decide from there. Those that want Lou gone remember that the Cubs brass love Lou and that love and desire to stay might be the biggest motivation the Cubs have to make big changes otherwise they might stick with the injuries/few pieces away mantra (even tho the reason is they have tooany awful long term no trade contracts that were given out by Hendry.)
  5. Cubs starter goes down, Reds starter vs. Cards goes down...baseball gods you are making it too obvious
  6. LOL. in case you were wondering, yes that play and subsequent injury does signify the enterance into fun bad territory.
  7. Getting a little frustrates but when u think about it this is what happens when your best 2 starters are on the DL. It's absolutely amazing that we survived as long ad we did with 1-2 pitchers constantly on the DL sincr May.
  8. Jake foxs at bat in the first inning really pussed me off. De la Rosa could not find the zone in the first. Went 2-0 on Bradley who swung and missed on 3 straight balls to k, then Lee walks on 4 pitches. So it's been 10 pitches since the last pitch he has thrown in the zone. So how does Foc approach the AB? by swinging at the first 3 pitches in the AB. Then Soriano swings early in the count to end the inning after Geo walks. 5 base runners in 1 2/3 inning. Let's see how many we can get...
  9. dammit, he should have used the "c'mon we haven't won the world series in 101 and you've won 26" argument.
  10. Wow, I just read that the Cubs have only won 2 series this year against teams that are currently over .500...the Cardinals and Marlins, both back in April. We need to start beating good teams because we have some big series coming up.
  11. Like you said it's gonna be hard to do much but if this season doesn't end in making the playoffs the Cubs are going to raid the farm system to convince Lou to stay. I would thin Vitters and co won't be here to start next year. The tough part is wher to upgrade. I'll let someone else decide.
  12. On the plus side, those runs we got screwed on earlier won't come back to haunt us
  13. I think this series is punishment for me selling Rockies World Series tickets for $750 over face value in 2007.
  14. I'd like to know that, too. I can understand 4 and 3, but not 2 and 4. It's absolutely impossible to make an MLB schedule that makes any real sense. The math just doesn't add up. Sure you can. There are 81 home games, so that equates to 27 three-game series. Unless you had all the teams take off days on the same day, its not really that possible. And even then, your always going to have 1 team flying from the east coast to the west coast with no day of rest in between.
  15. Where are you seeing 4 cards losses there? The Cardinals aren't playing all that well right now so I think 4 losses in 14 games is pretty doable.
  16. Is it pessimistic of me to say that if we can survive this stretch within 4 games of a playoff spot, I'll think we have a decent shot at the playoffs. The stretch I'm referring to is until the end of the WC trip. Assuming today is a loss... 1@ COL (0-1) 3 v. PHI (1-2) 3 v. PIT (3-0) 3 @ SD (2-1) 4 @ LA (2-2) Cards have 3 v. CIN (2-1) Off day (their 3rd in 10 days) 3 v. SD (3-0) 3 @ LA (2-2) 4 @ SD (3-1) That's 14 games...if the Cubs go 8-6, and the Cardinals go 10-4 (entirely possible with the ease of their schedule), I'll consider us having a good shot at the playoffs with Z and Lilly back most likely, and maybe Reed back.
  17. It was entirely too predictable. Lou is just petrified of tiring the bullpen out because we don't have an offday for awhile and the Phillies aren't going to make our lives any easier for our starters. I think we need to call up a starter from Iowa to use as a long man for the next few days.
  18. I didn't know Hurricane Sally has decended over Denver ready to wreck having and get this game called in the 6th inning.
  19. I'm so glad we burned an out last inning to keep Wells in the game. Kid's got nothing today.
  20. more like VaGiants....amirite +1 We need an epic Cardinals/Cubs fight like that one and the ARod/Varitek fight a few years ago...preferablly without anyone being struck with bats.
  21. Almost another error there. Does the thin air make it hard to throw and catch as well?
  22. Sweet...Baker, Hill, Wells to lead off the 6th
  23. Hammel just threw 4 straight pitches in the dirt...Soriano swung at 2 of them. Amazingly he made contact with one of them.
  24. Soriano is just awful. I hate when he just guesses on every pitch.
