  1. I don't think its a complaint as much as it is mocking the fact that the MLB supposedly made these rules partially so that players were drafted in order of talent and not signability. Everyone knew that wasn't going to happen going in, so there's no surprise that it didnt happen this way at all.
  2. Are your number projections based on the 5% overage that's allowed before penalties?
  3. There is nothing ideal about that timeline. Nothing at all. lol I deleted ideally but then couldnt think of another way to start that sentence so i put it back in there. How about "The most likely scenario to compete in 2015, we'll finish 62-100...."
  4. At this point I think Cubs fans should just accept 2015 as the year to look forward to. If we somehow start competing in 2014 then that's just a bonus. Plus although this year is terrible and next year will probably be more of the same without much improvement, even if we don't compete in 2014, we should see some clear improvement during that season, as I don't believe the FO is going to open up the check book to fill any holes we might have going into 2015 if the team finishes last in the MLB in 2014. Ideally this year we finish 62-100, next year 65-97, 2014 79-83 and then compete in 2015.
  5. Weird thing about Wiseman from that fan graphs article. Not sure if its true but in the article it says: As one of the commentors then points out, Vandy doesn't have an undergraduate business school. They have a department of economics which is pretty good, but their only business school is their MBA program. Could it all be a bluff? Not that it matters because even if it was a bluff, I don't think he'll settle for 150K.
  6. Really sorry if this was already posted: http://chicago.sbnation.com/chicago-cubs/2012/6/5/3065418/2012-mlb-draft-chicago-cubs-mark-appel-new-rules Sounds like the Cubs brass loathes the new draft rules as much as everyone else.
  7. Has anyone really given a good breakdown of how teams have stratagized for this draft with the new rules? I was listening to a podcast with Kevin Goldstein and he called this draft an absolute complete failure and said the general strategy was to take top talent in rounds 1-5 and pay overslot if needed, and then draft a bunch of guys who should be going in rounds 11-15 in rounds 6-10 so that they can play them all 500k to ensure they remain within their draft budget. Is that really going to be the best draft strategy in this new draft? That said, I don't think the Cubs went this way. I admit I know almost nothing about the draft compared to a lot of you so I could definitely be wrong, but it seems like for the most part the Cubs drafted guys in the first 10 rounds that were expected to sign at slot, save one of two picks like Almora.
  8. Definitely what SSR said. How can you not root for Prior? The guy was our future and in his very short time gave us so many awesome moments. Standing up to Bonds alone is worth rooting for him a decade later. I'll admit I wasn't really rooting for him much the first year or two after he left the Cubs because I didn't want him to resume being a Cy Young caliber ace immediately after leaving the Cubs and making us wonder what if. But its been so long that he can randomly become the most dominant pitcher in baseball for the next decade and I would love it.
  9. If anyone wants a good laugh, check out this thread...the whole thing is a bit ridiculous but the first couple of posts are dumbfounding, even in the timeframe it was written. http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=964905 This from December of 2009 during Roses 2nd season when he started off a little slow coming off an ankle injury that kept him out of the entire preseason.
  10. That really sucks man. Glad you have something like this to cheer you up a little bit.
  11. Wanted to see the Kings take it on their home ice, but I am perfectly fine with another hockey game this year.
  12. I...don't agree. Yeah, he was probably being a little conservative there. Congrats on the finals berth, though. It is impressive that the Celtics are doing so well against the Heat - Bosh or no Bosh - but they've had a very fortunate setup to the playoffs. Mediocre Atlanta team trying to work Horford back into the rotation with months off, mediocre Philly team that is only there because Rose died, and then a Heat team without Bosh. As far as getting to the Finals, it was either going to be Boston, Atlanta, Philly or a Rose and Noah-less Bulls team. Surviving from that group of teams is not exactly something to brag about. I will say that I am stunned they won game 5 and that opened my eyes a bit. And I know they are dealing with quite a few injuries too. But since we'll never know for sure and because I'm a bitter, depressed Bulls fan, I'm putting my homer cap on and saying the Bulls would have won in 5, maybe 6. I love you SSR
  13. I would say "Typical Cubs. Win 10-0 one day and lose 8-0 the next" but scoring 10 runs in a game is anything but typical for the Cubs.
  14. I do not think that much will happen until the draft. Right and free agency doesn't start until July 1 anyways. I love when free agency starts. Unlike the other sports, there is a huge flurry of signings the first couple days. Edit: come to think of it, the NFL is like that too but the other 2 sports are spread out more.
  15. lmao. Sucks to be Houston. They lose his slot amount if he doesnt sign right? That's really rough. Pirates drafted him... Not Houston. I know I just changed it. Had Astros on the brain from the post I was quoting.
  16. lmao. Sucks to be Pittsburgh. They lose his slot amount if he doesnt sign right? That's really rough.
  17. it's Castro's fault the Cubs are 18-36 this year.
  18. Gotta marvel at this Kings run. 15-2 so far and their only 2 losses have come when they were already up 3-0 in the series. They have not lost a single pressure game the entire playoffs do far.
  19. Not sure how credible Mike Rosenbaum is, but he is writing for Bleacher Report so that's a strike against him. Maybe you guys know him better than I do, as he writes for thegoldensombrero.com and prepbaseballreport.com. He's also a White Sox fan. Anyways, he gave grades for every pick tonight. The Almora pick was given an A, the Johnson pick a B+ and the Blackburn pick a B- (mostly due to signability which you guys have partially refuted). Also, B- was the lowest grade he gave out so I'm not sure what that means. He also has a video up where he gives Almora a Carlos Beltran comp. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1208052-2012-mlb-draft-results-pick-by-pick-grades-and-results
  20. So for the gurus here, in your estimate where are the Cubs at currently in terms of spending? I guess based on the conversation here it looks like Almora is probably coming in at slot or slightly under. Johnson seems like an underslot pick and Blackman who knows...if they actually sign him it seems like he'll be a good deal overslot. Depending on what happens with Blackman, the Cubs might be in a good position to take an overslot player. Who is still available that would fit that description? The Blackman pick confuses me a bit. He is supposedly going to be a really tough sign as he's very committed to college, but at the same time from what I'm reading it doesn't seem like he has a high enough ceiling to go way overslot for him. If we were going to save on the 1st 2 picks and go wild with the 3rd I would have hoped for a higher ceiling player. Maybe Theo knows something we don't or has evaluated him as having a higher upside than many/most expect.
  21. Yeah. Who exactly does this system benefit? The teams with a lot of money can't spend it, the teams without a lot of money can't invest in their minor league system, and the players don't get paid. It's a lose, lose, lose. It sucks and its bad for small market teams. It's been proven that small market teams can spend in the draft and build up their farm system, which was probably the best way they could build a contender. Now they have to invest in a great front office and scouting staff and hit on a high percentage of their picks to build a good team. If a big market team misses on picks, they have the option to fill spots via FA. Teams like the Royals and Rays do not. It's too bad, as Selig has been whining about small market inequality for years and then he does something like this right when small market teams were starting to take advantage of the draft.
  22. Or they are gambling that Appel won't refuse to sign and sit out a year? It will be very interesting to see who wins battles like this in the new draft environment, the agent or the team. Previously, the team had nothing but their own budget stopping them from caving to get the kid signed.
  23. Ugh, of course he finds his way to an NL Central team
