  1. I don't think any of the other candidates (Dejesus, Nate, Russell) are likely to pass through waivers. It's possible they get claimed and the Cubs work out a trade though I guess.
  2. I'm assuming this is just Sullivan trolling us a bit, but its at least worth discussion. Do we really expect the Cubs payroll to be under $75 million next year? I'm assuming that $75 million figure doesn't include paying Soriano though, so it would be a little higher. $75 million seems way too low for a team that fans are expecting to take the step to respectability next year. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0801-2014-cubs-chicago-20130801,0,5504726.story
  3. That doesn't sound like a guy that plans on letting the franchise QB go anywhere to me. http://mmqb.si.com/2013/07/31/phil-emery-3q/ So basically, Mike Tice was getting fired no matter what, and Lovie and Jay didn't have a great relationship.
  4. The offense was so streaky that year, and it seemed to go dry the last week of the season. Other than that, I have no [expletive] clue. We were up 1.5 games with 9 games left, playing 2 against the hapless Mets, 4 against the hapless Reds, and 3 against the Braves who were resting for the playoffs. Against the Mets it was LaTroy Hawkins blowing it, then the offense not showing up that sunday. Against the Reds, the Cubs just stopped scoring and lost 3 of 4 despite great pitching performances. In one game Sosa came up with the bases loaded and missed a grand slam by inches, in another Prior struck out 16 guys and Hawkins blew the save. Also Austin Kearns. Also the Astros finished by winning 31 of their last 39 games and finished 3 games ahead of us.
  5. It was reported as being worked on all day and officially announced an hour after the deadline. Who reported that it was being worked on with the Cubs? It came out of nowhere. Nomar wasn't even informed until 3:45pm that he was traded. Bruce Levine was talking about Nomar to the Cubs in early July and it was being talked about plenty on message boards (mostly dismissively). It didn't come out of nowhere. Yeah it was definitely discussed here, and you are right, most people dismissed the rumors and thought there was no chance it was happening, mostly because people didn't think the Red Sox would ever deal Nomar.
  6. Yeah I remember listening to the radio at 3:00 and hearing nothing was happening, then accepting that the Cubs didnt do anything, and then getting a text from a friend of mine who is a Red Sox fan saying "Wow, enjoy Nomar" like 30-45 mins later. Sad that the Nomar trade didnt work out because that was one of the greatest moments that I've had as a Cubs fan.
  7. why? There's no point in midnight. At least later in the day than 3pm. I remember sitting in the drive-thru at a Steak-n-Shake when the Nomar deal happened. Now, I'm just stuck in my office, pretending to work, while watching twitter/nsbb. The deadline was exactly the same during the Nomar deal. It was on a Saturday in 2004, so thats why he remembers being out of work.
  8. The Central should be pretty interesting this year. It will probably be a battle between the Pacers and the Bulls (if the Bulls can stay healthy), with the Cavs as a darkhorse. The Pistons will be....interesting at least, and the Bucks are much less interesting but whatever.
  9. When he comes on the radio I change channels. What a miserable guy. At least he has a reason to be miserable lately with PFT shutting down.
  10. Three weeks ago, they finished a road sweep of the White Sox. Wow, I'm an idiot. I don't blame you for not counting/remembering a 2 game series whose games were played over a month apart from each other. Anyways, last road sweep of 3 or more games was last September vs. Pittsburgh.
  11. I forgot about CC until just now
  12. He's also a shortstop who may hit 40HR. The rarity of that is just ridiculous. Unfortunately he's a SS who may not get on base 30% of the time. The rarity of that, unfortunately is not ridiculous. A lot of very good hitters start getting pitched around eventually, and that's where the walks come from. Alfonso Soriano says Hi. Strangely enough, when Soriano had his best season (by far) his walk rate exploded
  13. Shades of Pat Kane taping in a goal that was already going in. Sorry I'm still in hockey mode :)
  14. Pitchers today: 3-3 Rest of the teams: 1-27
  15. Soriano was 4-5 with a HR and 3 RBI today, including a walkoff single. Good to see him still on the tail end of his hot streak.
  16. Not used to seeing Soldier Field grass so green
  17. Cubs are 35-35 in their last 70 games (Since May 5)
  18. Waddle and Silvy feel betrayed
  19. So in retrospect, should we have gotten better players in the Feldman and Marmol trades, as opposed to international pool money? I get that it saves us quite a bit in penalty money, but the Cubs don't seem to be concerned with what they are spending this year in the international market.
  20. Just for fun, every player's (except Stewart) best season between 2005-2008. Hafner - .308/.439/.659/1.097 5.9 (MVP-8) Jeter - .343/.417/.493/.900 5.5 (AS MVP-2) Ichiro - .351/.396/.431/.827 5.8 (AS MVP-8) ARod - .314/.422/.645/1.067 9.4 (AS, MVP-1) Cano - .306/.353/.488/.841 6.7 (AS MVP-22) Soriano - .277/.351/.560/.911 6.1 (AS MVP-6) Granderson - .302/.361/.552/.913 7.6 (MVP-10) Teixeira - .306/.400/.563/.963 4.6 Wells - .303/.357/.542/.899 6.2 (AS MVP-22) Youkilis - .312/.390/.569/.958 6.3 (AS MVP-3) Overbay - .312/.372/.508/.880 3.2 Sabathia 6.3 (AS CY-1 MVP-14) Pettitte 6.8 (CY-5 MVP-24) Kuroda 2.7 Rivera 4.3 (AS CY-3 MVP-9)
  21. Stat of the day: Since June 28th, Alfonso Soriano has hit 10 HRs. The Yankees have hit 8.
  22. Yeah this will be terrible for our playoff push
