Phillies lost, Cubs back to WC1 Padres up 7-1 over Giants so looking like they will stay 2.5 games behind the Cubs (3 in loss column) Diamondbacks and Rangers tied at 1 midway through the game. In unrelated results, the White Sox swoon is continuing with a loss to the Cardinals. They are now just 1 game ahead of the Guardians for 1st place in the Central, and 1 game ahead of the Astros for a bye to the ALDS. If they fall out of 1st they are still in decent shape for the playoffs as they’re 3 games ahead of Toronto for what would be WC3. But going from a bye into the ALDS to a road WC series against the Yankees would certainly be a change in fortunes for them.

Nah, maybe officially since they haven’t been played yet but the point of a magic number is to track the number of wins and losses needed to ensure the playoffs are clinched. The games will be played and a winner and lose will be determined. Even if the games get rained out they will be played if necessary to decide the playoffs. It’s not like the Cubs win the 4th to last game of the season to get their magic number to 2 and say “woah now the Padres and Diamondbacks are tied for WC3. We can’t celebrate yet because they haven’t officially lost the games they’re guaranteed to lose. “

I guess 9 technically. The 10th was blowing out the Blue Jays in the first game of a series, then losing the next followed by a rain out. The make up game was won by the Cubs, but obviously was played at a different time of the season. WAS TEX CWS STL COL TOR DET SEA ARI CIN

I know its ultimately inconsequential but it annoys the horsefeathers out of me that Shota, and the Cubs in general, couldn't go through 1 game without giving up a HR.

Because I'm weird I just looked it up, the Cubs have had 10 series this year where they won 1 of the games by 5+ runs and lost all of the other games in the series.

If they lose the next 2 games by 1 run each, I'm peacing out on baseball for the season.

The more the Cubs score, the more this feels like its turning from "nice get right game" to "oh god they're gonna win by 15 and lose the next 2 arent they?"

Honestly, I'm glad he caught it. I was worried Conforto would strike out and then Ramirez GIDP (which almost happened if the pitcher covered 1st)

Nice heads up base running Bregman. That would have been tough to score on if he didnt have to reach into the stands to catch it

Man I know Bregman is slow and there's 0 outs but I really think he could have scored. Maybe I'm wrong, Cruz has a gun. These situations just scare me due to our approach in these situations.

Pirates are on fire having won 4 in a row and 9-2 in their last 11 games. They are over .500 for the season. Also since Shota is on the bump, it luckily it seems like more of a crosswind today.

Thanks to old friend Cam Smith's HR, the Astros beat the Phillies today, meaning the Cubs will be 1 GB Philly with 15 to play while holding the tiebreaker over the Phillies. If you are an optimistic fan, still a chance to have WC Round hosted at Wrigely If you are a pessimistic fan, one more potential "out" the Cubs have to avoid missing the playoffs as the Phillies would just have to play 1 game worse than the Cubs the rest of the season for the Cubs to finish ahead of them. Edit: Though for whatever reason the results of the day have caused the Cubs playoff odds to go down 0.2%. I wonder if its because the Braves won over a strong Rays team, making their upcoming 3 game series seem more difficult for the Cubs.

Tonight’s results dropped the Cubs to 96.7% odds of making the playoffs, down 3.1% from their peak of 99.8% last Saturday. At their highest point in 2023 their playoff odds were at 95.4%.

Diamondbacks lose! cubs only lose 0.5 games off their lead and remain 3 up in the loss column with 15 to play and hold the tiebreaker. So essentially still 4 up Yes the cubs play is depressing but I’ll take whatever good news we can get…
