I'm not sure if you noticed, but the Cubs teams from 2010-2014 were quite bad. They play a disproportionate number of games at 4 ballparks (besides Wrigley) but let's freak out about the ballpark that they've lost at the 2nd most out of those 4 parks. -

are you for serious? For one, Zach Miller had a couple good games. He's a middling TE. Kevin White has to be fantastic to make this an above average offense. There is no running game, the line remains a huge question. The offensive coordinator is a pud. The head coach is the most conservative coach in the league. I mean, they've had offenses with Forte, Jeffery, Bennett and Marshall struggle to achieve mediocrity. Miller had 4 good games. He can be a pretty good receiving TE. That being said, there's almost 0 chance he stays healthy. Last year, he played 15 games after playing 0 in the previous 3 years. He missed most of camp. He's not playing anywhere near 16 games. White probably won't be fantastic, but hopefully he takes some steps in that direction. The run game should be interesting. I think the Bears will definitely give the run game a college try. I think they'll make sure it doesn't work on a game-by-game basis before they abandon it each week. And I think they'll run all 3 backs and in a variety of ways to try to make it work. But yeah, I'm hoping for average. Average offense and slightly above average defense would make this an 8-8 team. Wouldn't an average offense + slightly above average defense + bottom 5 schedule give you better than 8-8 assuming average luck?

Seriously am I so spoiled by good pitching that I gave to hate Hammel so much when his surface numbers show a #3 starter for most teams?

hammel can see innings...just not as a starter He gave up a homer on the first pitch. I have no faith in him as a reliever either. Do you think a starters potential ability as a reliever is related to how they do in the first inning of starts?

This talk made me think about the 2003 Braves, who won 101 games and got bounced by the 88-win Cubs. Which made me try to remember Game 5 of that series, of which I could really only remember Borowski closing it out. So I looked it up on B-R and of course Dusty Baker sent Wood out there for the 8th with 106 pitches already thrown and a three-run lead. So basically now I'm just remembering how much I hate Dusty Baker and how much I love how our pitching is being managed this year. I might be crucified for this but in a winner take all game and a very shaky pen, I'm not necessarily opposed to Wood pitching the 8th in that situation.

And also our two best relievers other than Chapman have been injured for the majority of that time. Grimm's last 24 appearances: 20.2 IP, 1 ER, 10 H, 6 BB, 28 K, 3 XBH, 0.44 ERA, .425 OPS against This is our 6th inning guy in the playoffs... you know the 6th inning we won't even need a reliever to pitch in.

Yep, I can totally see the "How were we so wrong about the Bears?" articles being written in mid-November. It doesn't mean I think it will necessarily happen, but I definitely think your scenario above is a realistic one.
