  1. I've heard a few positive bits. Not on individual players, which is probably whats important, but after killing the Bears for the performance against Denver and the first day of the co-practices with New England, the beat guys went out of their way to point out that the Bears "won" day 2 and maybe day 3. After the actual game, most of the reaction was how well the 1st team played against the Pats with the cavet that we don't know how good the Pats backup QB is (although good enough to torch the Bears 2nd team defense) But you are definitely right, more negative than positive and there really hasn't been anything compelling about this team. There does seem to be a lot of guys banged up as well. All that said, although my initial optimism for the season has dampened with how training camp has gone, I'm not letting anything that I see/hear before week 1 influence me too much. I still think Pace projected this as another rebuilding year, but one that with an easier schedule and some luck could be a playoff team (although you can probably say that about like 28 teams).
  2. Clemens has made 7 starts this year, in those 7 starts he hasn't lasted more than 5 innings in any of them (actually in 6 of the starts he pitched exactly 5 inning, and in the other one he went 4.1 IP) He faced the Cubs back in June with the Marlins and went 5 IP giving up 4 runs on 4 hits and 5 BB. Addy homered off of him but Lackey was a little bitch that day and got lit up and the Cubs lost.
  3. Is there another free site besides FanGraphs that has team stats like BB% and Contact %? There was a question asked by someone in a FG chat asking how teams with high BB% and low Contact % perform against better pitching in the postseason, and I was trying to put that together on my own but they don't have splits for only postseason statistics (that I can see). FWIW I used a BB% over 9% and Contact % under 79% as my parameters. The Cubs (10.4% and 76.8%) would be outliers in both but there are really no teams over the last 8 years that have a walk rate that high with a contact level that low that make the playoffs. If anyone cares, the teams that qualify for this are: 2015 Cubs (9.1%, 74.7%) 2015 Dodgers (9.2%, 78.0%) 2013 Reds (9.3%, 78.1%) 2012 Braves (9.3%, 78.0%) 2010 Rays (10.7%, 78.7%) 2009 Rockies (10.6%, 78.5%)
  4. Dave Cameron answered a question about the NL Cy Young race in a chat today. One person's perspective but its from an actual voter to take it FWIW.
  5. it was explained to me yesterday that the difference between living in California and living in North Dakota is a lot less time to spend on a message board because there is actually stuff to do in CA.
  6. If the Cubs went 10-10 in that stretch instead of 5-15, and they played up to their current pythag (shitty streak still included in RD), we'd be at 90-35 right now, on pace for 117 wins. Of course that's a lot of if's and but's but its fun to discuss anyways.
  7. I'm like super glad you joined our message board
  8. I think they only have to be something like 5 games over .500 the rest of the way to get 102 wins. Yep, 22-17 I really want 100 wins, but beyond that I would love to finish 103-59 or better. 103-59 looks disproportionately more awesome than 102-60
  9. Stupid question but since the Cardinals lead for the 2nd WC spot, that means our magic number for clinching the playoffs would be even lower than 25 right? Obviously the real celebration is winning the division but it would also be nice to know when we officially clinch our spot in the postseason for a smaller celebration. Edit: Just figured it out, our magic number for clinching at least a Wild Card spot is 23.
  10. The recent reports for Kershaw are encouraging (which sucks from a playoff perspective but that's a different story). I'm guessing if he comes back before September and is anywhere near as dominant as he was before he got hurt he will be the overwhelming Cy Young choice for writers.
  11. Winning run at the plate. Come the horsefeathers on
  12. And then there's Heyward the offensive killjoy
  13. God I really don't know which one I love the most. I guess it depends on the inning
  14. Walking the first batter coming off his last game is an on ominous sign
  15. Not very often Len gets that fooled on a HR call
  16. That was freaking awesome. Best non-Cubs moment of baseball watching for me. Mostly with the Rays and Red Sox. On the NL side I still blame Marmol for that Cardinals World Series
  17. According to the data in this article, Chapman is the Jorge Soler of relief pitchers with regards to cold weather performance: https://theathletic.com/17794/2016/08/23/can-aroldis-chapman-thrive-in-hostile-climes-of-fall-baseball/
  18. So we have the MLB ERA leader, NL Home run leader, NL doubles leader, NL WAR leader and reigning MOY, ROY and Cy Young winner on this team.
  19. that wouldn't make any sense is what i was saying every nlds game (in either series) is on FS1/MLBN. they aren't all going to be day games. Last year's AL Series on FOX: Royals - Astros: N D D D D Jays - Rangers: D D N D D Royals-Jays: N D N D D N Last year's NL Series on TBS: Cubs - Cardinals: N D N D Mets - Dodgers: N N N N N Cubs - Mets: N N N N So that's 5 AL Night games vs. 11 day games and 11 NL Night games vs. 2 Day games I'm not sure what the network agreements are, but it certainly seems like they do not have any control over night and day. Last year was unique because the only team in the playoffs that played in the western 2 time zones was the Dodgers and thus they are a perfect fit for the late game time slots . That plus the fact that they were playing a team from the largest media market meant that they got all night games. In the other NL series you had the Cubs so of course they will get night games too. Meanwhile in the AL you had a bunch of teams that were rather 'meh' in terms of National popularity. In addition, in 2 of the 3 series you had a team from Canada, which really doesn't do anything in the US outside of baseball diehards. So I would guess that this year the proportion of day and night games by network is more even.
  20. It's not like he was wrong that it was a concern. Bryant just fixed it. kyle doesn't post here anymore so you dont need to suck his dick every time someone makes fun of him now Wait where did he go?
  21. how about they wrap it up early and the parade is on our birthday? Ahh yes my birthday twin. That's a great idea.
