Just finished a stretch where we had 24 home games and 8 road games (5 of them being in Milwaukee or the Cell). Went 24-8. That's what I call taking advantage of the schedule. Now we finish the season with 25 of our last 38 on the road.
Byproduct of having such predictable pitch selection? I was thinking that, could be it. Either way, for the most part they are still always late on it, its not like they are putting them in play or even necessarily timing him better.
For someone who has this ridiculous 101-105 MPH heater, Chapman seems to get into a lot of ABs where it takes him forever to put the guy away with a lot of foul offs. Not necessarily complaining, its just something that has surprised me.
I guess its possible. But my guess is Joe was trying to save everyone for Coors Field next. Yep, especially with another spot start game on Saturday with Montgomery/Cahill.
To go along with his multiple Kris Bryant games last year (the two I'm thinking of are the July 4th game against the Marlins where he hit a 2 run bomb and grand slam in the first 2 innings of the game and the GW HR against the Rockies game that is the single tipping point for 12 months of Cubs dominance)
You have to view these games through the lens of 'trying to figure things out before the playoffs' , so he probably will put unproven pitchers in big spots to see how they fare. Right now Joe probably has about 33 guys that he is evaluating to make the postseason roster. Obviously about 22 of those spots are filled, so these 6 weeks will be big in determining who the other 3 guys are.
Definitely not freaking out but if there's anything to be concerned about its the 6 walks. He has struggled with his command for large parts of the year despite still being an ace quality pitcher. I kind of thought he had turned the corner since the ASB so its a little concerning to see him have no command of his FB again. Could just be a blip, and Jake is too talented of a pitcher to struggle with his command for long, but we are in a 6 week coast to the finish line so a natural worrier like me starts looking for areas that need to be shored up before October. I think its more likely than not that I am silly for even bringing it up when he's dominating through October.
With a big lead, I would almost consider just pulling him after 80 pitches and letting him rest that arm. Yeah it might tax the pen before a series in Colorado but, i think our starter being rested and pitching well in October is more important.
