  1. Curveball of destruction? The Two Plane Bringer of Woe? The Eagle?
  2. Beltran was just an example....you're looking for skills/attributes that project long term...for position players it's things like athleticism (look at SB, SB%, 2Bs, BA, contact, then obviously the scouting side), the ability to handle all types of pitches, performance under pressure (Generalize of you're comfortable with then other numbers), ARL (Beltran was ROY at 20/21).....as much as you can...Same for pitchers....and size matters with pitchers....6' Santana with his short arm action was going to lose velocity quickly.... Pedro same thing... Not an exact science but again, FA is all about taking calculated risks and very piece of info. Personally, I'm excited to See if/when the Cubs put themselves in play for players like that. Hamels hasn't done anything crazy as far as IP, and that's an inexact science as well.
  3. He's not as good defensively (that isn't to say he can't play defense well at 2B or SS) but he can get on base a lot better than Barney and is more athletic/faster. I'd rather have Watkins than Barney as a backup middle infielder. Plus in today's run environment Barney might have some value as a starting SS, making him the more valuable trade piece to the organization.
  4. Not if it's the right guy. CC who came up at 20, hit FA in his 20's, been a top tier performer most of the time, gets Ks, limits base runners, possesses elite size, a top tier fastball from the left side, and two other pitches he can get K's with? Yep. Carlos Beltran hitting FA at 27 or whatever it was? Batting average, contact, elite base stealer, strong CF defense, good arm, stepped up in bigger scenes, not walk adverse, and so on? Hells yeah (still IMO a mistake to not chase him). A guy who's been injured, pops up for a couple of strong years, doesn't possess any top tier attributes otherwise or has major, obvious holes? Nope. Context...learn to apply it because it's everything in team building and FA. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but knowing as much as you can and finding value in it improves your odds. Cole Hamels, IMO, has the kind of combo of health, pedigree, skill, talent, and performance that lessens the fear. You're going to take the dive at some point....
  5. Two HRs against McNutt sucks, but awesome to see Lake turning it on. Tools laden is the way to be, but they need to help figure out his D! spittin rhymes. *clapclap*
  6. OTOH they were limited by vocalizing that he'd take less money to go to a SoCal team. Also, didn't call him unproven, just not as much as Hamels...Call it a shorter track record...lesser pedigree...whatever you want to call it, it wasn't there for the kind of contract Hamels might get or the kind of money CC and Teixeira got.
  7. I remember when CC was returning to Oakland and Baltimore had a leg up in chasing Teixeira. OTOH Wilson did take less money to play for the Angels...He's also not as good or proven as Hamels so he would see less money than any of those two above and Hamels.
  8. More of this please...May seems to be doing alright for the system.
  9. More fodder...The last time Hamels won the WS he was by far the best pitcher on the staff. The gap would close with Garza, but that just means a better rotation behind him.
  10. I think he has enough money to make it to Cali whenever he wants without having to spend all his time there. I also think Kershaw is a bigger factor than you make it. One because Kershaw has to be paid at some point himself as HE'S the guy over there and two because Hamels has spent the past two-three years in the shadow of a more popular ace or two. The thing about guys who are really, really great at what they do is that they tend to want people to know it. Cubs have a ton of ways to feed that ego what with cash and the chance to be the ace of a Cubs team that finally ends the drought.
  11. Dodgers already made a big splash by locking up Kemp for a similar price...their next one could be anything from dumping a ton of money on a player to firing their Hendry-esque GM. I will also say this...Hamels might not like playing second fiddle, yet again, to another elite arm (this one half a decade younger than him). I think he wants to lead his own staff, and it's an advantage to the Cubs that THEIR ace is a peer (another late 20's hothead) rather than an elder or a younger superstar. Just a guess...hypothesis...idea....theory....bs thing I just made up. Also think 7/161 is pushing it anyway. He'll get a lot but I'm more willing to guess on years than dollars. Don't think he gets 8, but not a number I'm afraid of either. Gotta pay to play in FA folks...have to understand that...elite players with top physical talent and stats are the ones to do it on. It's been said already but money is not likely to be the reason the Cubs will lose out on Hamels unless the bidding gets absolutely ridiculous.
  12. I like Junior Lake a lot actually relative to other guys in the system. He's got some young Soriano in him with the power/speed/K's thing and patience from him is some good stuff. Maybe he can hit a breaking ball better than Soriano one day as well, but he's definitely a mist watch guy in the system this year. A good year would really help legitimatize him.
  13. In dreaming of: Hamels Garza Dempster/Shark Shark/Maholm Wood/Fodder that somehow doesn't F it up and gives innings
  14. I'm rewatching Shark from yesterday...Anybody else who dug the pair of booobs in pink behind the plate? The dozen fat citizens around her probably did. Shark's got some CJ Wilson in his mechanics, which is funny because he's a fellow convert (and Shark is almost half a foot taller). Really like how he worked Braun in the first with just one fastball...inside at the knees at 95. Loving that he just blows two fastballs by Ramirez to open up the AB...Has he lost some bat speed? Nasty split to end it.
  15. I hope he's not. McLeod sounds like my kind of evaluator: Love the first part....There's also a part where he talks about actually building the relationship with people that was interesting. Sounds like a modern version of a Jim Hendry type of baseball guy, and by modern I mean naturally absorbed in the numbers world because he came up in it.
  16. Dallas Beeler needs more K's. Hell, all those pitchers need more K's. Rusin is pretty smooth so I have some hope for him as a 5th starter. I think you can throw him in the pool of arms next year who might get some starts in the 5 spot.
  17. I'm in this camp. The baseball world is littered with big, hard throwing HS pitchers who busted due to injury. No need to increase the odds by taking an already injured arm, even if I do believe in science and medicine.
  18. So better than a high end #3 on a contender? More like the stand alone ace on a WS winner, who probably wont be alone. OR just a slight notch (little sliver) over Anibal Sanchez.
  19. I'd try to get 6, wouldn't cry over 7. I'm a big Hamels fan, if you can't tell. Followed him since he was the kid who broke his arm before the draft somehow involving a jump and a pool. He and Kazmir were the big lefties in the draft, and that changeup was dirty even then. It's his out pitch being a changeup that makes me comfortable btw. I consider him an elite talent.
  20. Nobody regrets signing the best player in baseball. Oh noes he'll decline...surround him with talent and their franchise will probably stay afloat. If he wins a ring or two early on then that would be great for them.
  21. You're Chris Archering them. Who cares that they can become fringe role players? Are the Cubs REALLY missing Marwin Gonzalez right now?
  22. Man its awesome to see Andy Pettitte back.
  23. Only worried about three and rooting for Raley. Don't think most of these guys would get touched.
  24. Aramis isn't hitting very well either (though still better than Stewart) so I doubt that would have made much of a difference. Also, you mentioning Cashner prompted me to look up his stats. He's got a 3.68 ERA but a 1.705 WHIP. He's had no control as he's averaging 8 BB/9. Sure, but that's assuming that they would've gotten off to similar starts here. Once you change one thing, you change everything. That said, tis a hypothetical that has no meaning since it doesn't matter. Yeah. If Aramis is here, Ian Stewart isn't, which means we either still have Colvin and LeMahieu or traded them for something else. There was much truth in the LeMahieu.
