  1. I know and understand that no one here really loves Porcello, but the Tigers aren't going to dump him for someone like DeJesus. Would he sweet though because I do expect him to mature as a pitcher as he gets older.
  2. If Lake hasn't rewarded your optimism so far in his short time back, you're a very hard man to please. Oh he definitely is, but I want one or both to finish the year with good numbers. I'd also like Lake to figure out something with his defense, but right now I'm fine with him just working out the bat. If the bat is there the rest an be figured out later.
  3. Threw out the name Santana...Ervin has an option with the Angels next year, but they're a team with Weaver/Wilson/Haren at the top. If he shakes through, how interested are the Cubs? He does like giving up the HR ball. What about the enigmatic (awesome word) and now 32 year old Carmona?
  4. That's great to see a solid outing from Concepcion. Lake or Vitters...one of these two f'ers need to award my optimism this year...It's my right as an American, dammit.
  5. Whoa thanks for posting the mock. No shock at Appel eventually being the #1 pick. I would accept that...instantly becomes the best OF prospect in the system and maybe even the best bat prospect with Baez. I think Almora could potentially develop into anywhere from a 1-3 hitter in a lineup and lock down CF for a decade+. I really want to jump in on Correa's bandwagon, but I'm wondering if he's actually as good as the names being tossed with him. He does look legit defensively, and since he moves so well I wonder if I underrate his bat in the long term.
  6. I like the Drew idea but where does he play? Also like Liriano if you can get him on a nice buy low type deal, otherwise not a fan. I'd definitely go after Upton and Hamels, the two still young big names, and then look at a bunch of secondary guys like Drew, Jackson, Sanchez, Liriano, Swisher, Shields/Santana/Floyd/Carmona if they somehow hit...see what reliever is cheap and worth a gamble.
  7. What Hamels is seeking is purely speculation right now. The 8 year thing is something I've only seen here tbh, and we kind of made it a fact and let the conversation run.
  8. Kershaw he is not. Well, of course not. Kershaw would have been a slam dunk #1 in this year's draft. I like where BA ranked him. I don't view Fried as a top 10 guy. I don't like HS arms who's curveball is better than their fastball, even if there is the argument for projection. I remember guys like Everts, Gruler, Pawelek to a point...who else...Chaz Roe...IIRC Fried also lacks the cartoon stats you want from a top 10 HS pick.
  9. McDougal gets points for being the only pitcher I ever saw buckle Pujols. Followed up a couple of his 99 MPH fastballs with the best breaking ball of his career in a St. Louis vs KC game way back.
  10. Now he just has to do it 5 more times.
  11. Yeah no ones doing that twice...or whatever number it was left at. Let's all just be grateful that Harper is still mentally and physically capable to handle a baseball after The Incident.
  12. This will catch hell but...I'm glad he's recovered so quickly. Thought he'd be down for weeks if not more.
  13. Of course. Even bad teams can play a good half of baseball. Rember what was it...the '03 Royals? Or even the 2010 2nd half Cubs? The Mets do have some nice arms and IMO the best of the new parks in the sport. Citi Field is fn niiiiice man, definitely going to be a fun place to watch baseball when they don't suck. Awesome FO as well with Alderson and DePodesta headlining. David Wright is back...
  14. Yeah apologies there. Nobody wants that. Younger is the only point not aided by hindsight or rumor. Though I guess it can be said that Darvish was never really rumored to get 8 years.
  15. Then why Darvish? Hell, then why would you push a guy like Sanchez, who despite being cheaper will still get years of commitment, has already been injured many times over, and isn't even phenomenal numbers wise? I'm not sure I get your take on this thing...I find it very inconsistent with no real rhyme or reason. You keep going back to volatile commodity but personally I think people in general are volatile (meanwhile you have pushed signing an extremely volatile pitcher as a headliner AND called him elite). Common sense says find those who are less volatile and invest in them because there's a better chance of things ending well. FA is prospecting but with more money on the line...
  16. Yes, but in his case he's a superstar who used to smoke crack. I do agree that someone will take the leap. Hopefully it's those big bad Dodgers.
  17. It's "old" for any athlete...plenty still produce anyway, and we've seen top tier pitchers pitch well in their very late 30's and even early 40's. I wouldn't even do 4 years for Sanchez, and FA will get him that with ease. You couldn't pay me to pay a multi-surgery arm FA price AND have him be the headliner. Now if he's the AJ Burnett to Hamels' CC? Sure, I guess, but even then you're looking to get out of that sooner rather than later. Sounds like you have FA jitters...don't know how or why (well, I guess I do) but it's something you're going to have to deal with because to be successful the Cubs will have to be players in the FA market. You're pretty much copping out on elite talent because FA forces you to pay to play....I say [expletive] bitches, get [elite, actually elite] talent.
  18. Speaking of Upton he's not having a very strong contract season a month and a half in. BABIP is slightly below his career average (.315, career .327)...slash line is not terrible offensively...260/.333/.397 with a .333 wOBA and a 115 wRC+....fangraphs not liking his fielding or baserunning so far...21 K's in 87 PAs.

Edit: Wrong thread.
  20. 35-36 isn't even that old anymore. It's 2012 for Jah's sake...and again, there are things that make some guys less volatile than other guys and Hamels has alot of those things. I already know I'd rather have Hamels for 8 than Sanchez for 5, easily no contest even then for me. I also don't think the Cubs will be limited to one contract. They could do both, that's the advantage that comes from being the Cubs.
  21. Sucks Hamilton used to do crack because otherwise he's exactly the kind of talent to spend big money on. Unfortunately he did do that, but I'd be more than happy to bring in Upton instead as well.
  22. I'm learning that Mitch Williams is a sensational analyst on the most nonsense events and rumors.
