They go hand in hand. A guy who was a masher is relying even more on god (or Dr.) given ability than your typical major league hitter. But your question was about a guy who hit homers vs a guy who couldn't even make AAA, so ability is clearly part of the discussion that you raised. Why is a guy who is a masher relying more on his given ability than the guy who hits singles? The singles hitter isn't the only other type of hitter. So are they using the same amount of ability or are you just not answering the question?

He probably shouldn't turn it over so much then. Verdell can't shoot and can't play the point. He's nothing like Talor Battle.

Some fun quotes in those ESPN stories Kinda creepy. Was the clubhouse and coaching staff pissed at Mark Grace for the [expletive] eating grin he had shaking his hand and telling him to go back and touch 1B? The White Sox finished 2nd to the A's once. By 9 games. Maybe if Guillen wasn't such a shitty hitter, they could've made the world series. I bet Ron Kittle is pissed at you Ozzie. You're never gonna make it as a retired ballplayer acting like that Robin.

I think there's a difference between knowing how it should be done, and physically being able to get it done. I always question the ability of star players to coach, with the possible exception of guys who were known as terrific tacticians. I can't imagine Sammy Sosa being able to teach hitting well. I would be similarly skeptical about McGwire. That's a different argument than the one posed by people bashing McGwire as hitting coach. They're framing it as the reason he can't be a good hitting coach is his hitting style, not that he was really good.
  6. SouthSideRyan
Can somebody explain to me the belief that McGwire won't make a good hitting coach because he wasn't a high contact guy, but guys who never even made the majors, or sucked in the majors are capable hitting coaches? If a guy couldn't possibly teach a good hitter how to put the ball in play because he hit a lot of home runs, how in the hell is a guy going to teach a major league caliber hitter how to hit when he couldn't get past AA?

We're talking about high and tight here. NO ONE is going to purposely take one in the dome. If Gibson and the other old [expletive] goons did that as much as people like you claim(I don't believe it), then they're assholes, and don't deserve anyone's respect. And they certainly shouldn't be getting on their high horse about the immoral steroid users

It's not modern pitchers' fault that today's hitters are smart/tough enough to get hit and get a free base.
  9. SouthSideRyan
Why are we assuming Grace is clean again?

Shut the [expletive] up you coke fiend

    No.

Huh? What history do the Knicks have on a handful of other NBA teams? A .498 winning percentage Tied with the Hawks for 5th for most playoff appearances 10th in Division championships with 8. 2 NBA titles, less than the Pistons, Warriors, 76ers, Bulls, Spurs, Celtics, and Lakers
  13. SouthSideRyan
I must've missed what happened with LeBron and the Knicks. Anyone want to clue me in? When you're a fan of a dominant team like I am, the regular season is pretty boring, I have a hard time keeping focus when we blow everyone out. And half the team is resting for the playoffs

    I'm guessing South Carolina?

I wonder how much money Aldrich cost himself coming back this year. Was there a reason for his coming back besides to try and win a title? For UI, MSU wasn't as close as the score shows, though it is nice that we didn't give up down 20+ (again) Purdue we really should've won, but shot like ass from the FT line.

What sucks though is our schedule get really tough from here on out. We gotta start getting some good wins. What sucks is Pomeroy ratings have little if anything to do with how teams are placed in the tourney. We were a "10 seed" according to Pomeroy when we went 16-19 in '08. (This isn't to say I believe we belonged in the tourney in '08, or that we'd deserve it if the season ended today. It's just something nice to look at to talk me off the ledge a bit regarding this team's potential.) Did you see Ken Pom predicts we finish 0-8? That would be beyond awful. That's not how it works. He's predicts us to finish 5-7 from here on out. A good analogy I saw on Scout was that if you flipped a weighted coin 8 times and it was weighted to come up heads 60% of the time, you wouldn't predict the coin to come up heads 8 times. If we finished 0-8, Bruce is going to be in big trouble.

For Shigs and gittles, a straight Pomeroy rating for the tourney puts: BYU as a 1 seed. Wisconsin as a 2. Ohio St. and Mizzou as 3s. Kentucky and Arizona St. as 4s. An 11-7 Marquette team as a 6. Illinois as the last team in.

For a road game, losing by 7 to Tech isn't so bad since I think ISU isn't so much different a team than Tech. Especially for the first game without Staiger. Please give Kansas a battle on Saturday so they're worn down come Monday. I will almost guarantee a close game on Saturday. Ames is a tough place to play, and Brackins just destroyed us last year. Plus, we look like crap, AND we're probably looking ahead to Mizzou. I don't have a win penciled in by any means. I don't care how bad ISU is playing. You kill me, they are easily one of the top three teams in America without even starting to play well yet. Self will get them where they need to be. The game against ISU isn't 3 months from now, it's against the same KU team that hasn't looked anything like a top 3 team all year.

The mods should really step in.

Assuming things go as expected on Saturday, Kentucky will be #1 without a single win over team presently in the top 25.(as of the new polls) I'd imagine it's been awhile since that happened. (St. Joe's team that was undefeated forever maybe?)

This is a quote from an article, or is this one of the goofs over there like Ryan Christie? I believe it is a goof, but I think he took the AD thing from an article. Not 100 percent sure. Either way intresting stuff. His seat has to be getting warmer. I agree his seat is getting a little warm. Missing the tournament this year is going to require some serious leaps forward next year. Obviously the tournament is necessary, but I'm not sure he can survive something like an 8 seed and done next year. I'm not sure he should either. Of course I'm a kool-aid swilling homer and think we're making the tourney this year, and have a Final 4 chance next year.
  23. SouthSideRyan
He already did appear in the majors for us.

The Celtics just retire a lot of #s because they have a [expletive] load of good players in their history. Well, that and Reggie Lewis.
