I don't think that's really part of their strategy. Just kind of a coincidence. You've also got Travis Wood, Chris Volstad, the aborted Delgado acquisition, Vizcaino, and to a lesser extent; Michael Bowden, Jaye Chapman, and Henry Rodriguez
I feel like that's been standard with these IFA contracts where you get out early. I'm pretty sure Matsui and Kosuke(lol) had it as well. Additionally, I'm not Dave Cameron, it's literally his job to know these things. Those guys weren't FA in the QO era though, there's a lot less semantical difference in non-tender v. free agent without it. Anyway I wasn't asking to criticize, I was just surprised by it and wasn't sure if it was common knowledge I missed. They couldn't offer arb to secure a compensatory pick. It's the same idea, you get early FA and you don't have a draft pick dragging down your FA contract.

Sounds like the Cubs will just be picking for the Red Sox in this case, right? More likely the Red Sox want someone who is Rule 5 eligible, but they don't want to roster.
And much like those Cubs they have only one truly bad contract. ETA: They could place every player on their team making more than 5M on irrevocable waivers and Kyle Kendrick might be the only one not claimed beyond Howard. And I'd still put it better than 50/50 that he would be.
