  1. My understanding- it depends on the steroid. Some of the older stuff, maybe Winistrol (sp?)- or Stanozolol (Ben Johnson's drug), takes a while to get out of the system. And, they're pretty toxic, especially in pill form. Newer drugs are supposed to be less toxic and stay in the system shorter amounts of time (or are undetectable with contemporary tests, like the 'clear' that Bonds used). It comes down to the testers- the stuff that Manny got popped for is used when the person cycles off, so the body can start producing its own testosterone again, since the synthetic source is gone and the body was used to relying on it. If the tester is looking for something like that, it tells them a lot more than if they're just checking for certain anabolics, or certain testosterone levels- which users throw off by taking Chlomid and crap like that- the testosterone won't be way out of wack if they balance it with a female fertility drug. Or something like that.
  2. This stuff is almost intolerable.
  3. Could some of his pitch selection early this year be due to usage in the WBC, I wonder? Certainly, the September data is interesting and it will be cool to check out the rest of the way.
  4. No way he can throw a ball from short to first.
  5. Probably just depends on the number of pitches. Verlander threw 6 yesterday for Detroit, but it was only 67 pitches.
  6. What complete nonsense. Why? The steroid era was a joke and make a mockey of the game and it's records. Is that why no one cares about baseball anymore? :D Look, I know the 'era' makes it difficult to compare current players to past players. However, that hasn't ruing the NFL, NBA, etc. Mr. Tiger, in the post above this one, is right per usual.
  7. My print at home tickets are saying check back March 10. Still not printing.
  8. Cyst in the hip. Where do guys inject steroids, anyway? I know, it's the but-cheek, but still, I've read of injections that get infected. So, I figure I can throw wild speculation out there.
  9. They're trying Garko in the outfield in SPring.
  10. http://joeposnanski.com/JoeBlog/2009/02/15/steroid-symphony/ Lengthy, but I found interesting, blog post about steroids in baseball.
  11. Cool. I'd say we'll probably look at something like that and rent a car. You have to rent a car in and around Phoenix. Everything is 45 minutes away, at least. I stayed in scottsdale as well. You should consider seeing them at hohokam as well as a road venue. Good idea- there's several teams working out in driving distance, right?

  13. The key word is "going." Got it. I can handle going potty, I just want to know hotels, etc. people have had luck with. Wiseakers.
  14. Thank you sir. Wait, I don't get it.
  15. My wife is thinking of taking me to spring training next year for my 40th birthday. Do any of you have hotels, etc. to recommend?
  16. Not if it's a safety issue. This isn't about competitive balance. The difference between two 225-lb. athletes running into each other and two 350-lb athletes running into each other is huge. But I don't think any sport's gonna put a cap on that.
  17. But, in this hypothetical, everyone has access (offensive players too), and the hypothetical supplement is legal, so there's no reason to ban in the sport. Weightlifting alone makes a huge difference on the field, and while some coaches in basketball and baseball resisted it, I think we're moving toward all of them doing it (if we're not already there). If there's a legal way of being a better athlete, they all will do it, and I guess should be allowed.
  18. This is where things get murky. We'll soon have some major PEDs that are almost unequivocally good for you. It would be more accurate to say they are banned because they're illegal. True. Kyle's point is interesting though. What happens if a PED is invented that pumps people up and there really aren't any serious side effects? You could have a situation where it is banned in professional sports, but everyone on the street is popping it like candy. If it's legal for everyone, why would it be banned from sports?

  20. I'd like to know too, please.
  21. What does he say about it? The main thing he suggests is that you let these guys in the Hall of Fame. His point is that there was a steroid era as well as a dead ball era, a segregated era, live ball, a higher mound, etc. He thinks they should put something in the Hall that talks about these eras and the dates included and let people make their own judgement about the numbers. Thus, guys like Bonds, Clemens, et al get in, but people that know the history of the game know that many players had an advantage during the time they played (though often alongside and against players using the same advantages).
  22. Another great Joe Sheehan article at BP today, on A-Rod, his presser, and Bud. I think Bob Costas is about the only big name broadcaster that I agree with on the steroid issue.
  23. Everybody's on him because he's vague and talking about a 'cousin'. What if he just doesn't want to rat out who he got the stuff from? That's about as human as you can get (for most people, anyway).
