  1. I think if the Cubs can't work a trade for Peavy and fail to resign Dempster they may try to get A.J. Burnett.
  2. Was Roberts with him? Danny Graves and Adam Dunn were with him.
  3. I think that might even be a little optimistic on Dempster. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see his ERA wind up a good bit higher than that. I would. It's not like it was a fluky year where Dempster outperformed his peripherals by a huge margin. It was a fluky year in the sense that he's never pitched that well before. I expect regression for sure, but I'd expect him to be somewhere in the 3s. Am I wrong, or was the biggest difference in Dempster the BB/9? (I may look into this to better participate in Dempster threads- I'm also worried that he'll fall way off, but maybe I shouldn't be)
  4. It was his nickname at Notre Dame, for some reason. He got it from preying upon weak secondaries (like a shark), if I'm not mistaken. I thought it was because with his nose that, from a profile view, he looks like a shark.
  5. Scrambled, over easy, sunny side up or Ostrich? You don't read very well. How do you figure?
  6. Even if we don't get Peavy, I want no part of Dempster if he's going to get that type of contract. No kidding. I think A.J. Burnett could be great the next few years. Give him the money in lieu of Dempster.
  7. By the way, Meph- what do you think of ZIPS compared to Pecota, for instance?
  8. I hope so. I really thought he was on his way to 25-30 this year. I read an article about broken wrists and how power is slow to come back and I figured that was what was wrong with 2007- but now I'm afraid he won't get back to pre-'05 levels even.
  9. http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/oracle/discussion/2009_zips_projections_chicago_cubs/ I didn't see this posted, sorry if I missed it.
  10. I think Giambi is still a very good hitter, but he's lousy in the field and I think he'll play fewer and fewer games from here on out.
  11. Maybe moving Lee allows them to add a lefty 1B? Tex or Dunn?
  12. Man, if Fuku can handle center like he looks like he can and can take a decent step forward offensively he will be much more tolerable there.
  13. I'd be curious to know your reasoning for this. Me too. Ted Lilly has been solid for the Cubs.
  14. Who is your clubhouse leader, and how much of an effect would his departure have on your squad? If he leaves, will you and your mates just pack it in for '09? Or, will you step up and be that guy?
  15. Oh, and I think I'm ready to argue against the notion that Wood is the clear leader of the team, as well. How does he rally the troops during a game? Stroll down from the dugout? I haven't looked real hard, so I may be wrong, but I don't remember hearing much about Wood being a leader in what I have read about the Cubs. It's just that he's been there the longest. Sometimes you hear it about Lee-is he not the 'quiet leader' anymore? I did find an article where Rich Hill said Jon Lieber could be a clubhouse leader back in January. Maybe they should get Lieber back for '09! Look, Manny Ramirez was labled a clubhouse cancer for the Red Sox, and then weeks ago was being hailed as the clubhouse presence the Dodgers needed and the reason they could make the playoffs. This whole leader stuff SEEMS pretty tenuous. I haven't played for any MLB teams (I'll cheerfully accept an invite, though), and I will never say a player leaving will have zero affect on a team because of his off the field leadership/ palling around/ rallying ability. I will also never say it could destroy said team either. And I don't think you have to play on an MLB team to have that opinion. And, I don't remember a bunch of Cubs saying Wood's that leader either.
  16. Tiresome rebuttal questioning a NSBB poster's major league experience and its apparant requirement when arguing against such an absolute statement about the unknown in -5, -6, -7...
  17. I think you may be overstating Wood's (or any player's) affect off the baseball field on the team's performance. What teams did you play for in the majors? I'm assuming you disagree with him and therefore I ask you what teams you played for I've never played in the major leagues. That's why I find it so difficult to judge whether a player's leadership/personality off the field has little to no effect on team performance. To be clear, I argued that a departure by Wood (or any player) may not be devastating, not that it would be non-existant.
  18. I think you may be overstating Wood's (or any player's) affect off the baseball field on the team's performance.
  19. What if choosing not to go multi-year with Wood meant going multi-year with someone like Fuentes from Colorado? Losing Wood doesn't have to mean going with Wuertz instead.
  20. god, that is what I notice. Casual fans love to crow about my team going out, and I couldn't even tell you who 'their' team is. On the other hand, my hardcore Brewer/Sox fan buddy was telling me on the phone yesterday that we (Cub fans) have to realize that we're favored for the NL Central right now for 2009.
  21. "What happened to your Cubs" is what I get.
  22. I'm sure similar things happen all the time, but the fact that its actually being reported by the Trib is interesting. Especially since the Cubs sometimes are good at pointing out flaws in players publicly right before trading them.
  23. There's actually a lot of talent in this free agent class. I wonder if that'll bring the price down a little on guys.
  24. How are they not set up for a short series? Best 1-2-3 punch in baseball as far as starting pitching (pitching wins championships, folks). And the best offense in the NL with arguable the best depth... how are they not set up for a short series? And a good part of the offense was dictated on streaky hitters. Soriano, Ramirez and Edmonds. Heck, even Soto were all susceptible to slumps in a short series. I think every hitter in baseball is susceptible to slumps in a short series. That's just the nature of the game.
  25. Moore and Rodgers (if he starts, of course) Lee Evans or Bobby Engram? I have Evans and I'm looking forward to the Cardinals secondary this week.
