  1. Texas is 6th in hitting and 14th in pitching. They could use a cf and pierre could use a change of scenery. Cubs could give them Williams or Hill, as a 5th starter. Nevin hits for power, which the Cubs desperately need, and plays 1b and can play rf. Also, he's quite good against lefties and lefties have killed Chicago this year.
  2. i like to be optimistic, but hill vs. schmidt gives me little hope.
  3. giants 6 cubs 2 cubs get 10 singles, 2 walks and a double. 1 ball reaches the warning track, but is caught. hill gives up 714 & 5 runs in 5 innings.
  4. looks like we need larry bowa. he'd light a fire.
  5. For who? RonDL would be a nice addition. He can hit lefties. omg! just looked at his numbers. he's been a lot worse than jones and pierre.
  6. Leyland: We Stunk. Next question. Reporter: What bothered you the most? Leyland: It was lackluster, the whole ball of wax was lackluster. We had a chance to take the series, take 3 out of 4, and we came out like we brought our luggage to the park like we had to play a game before we went on the road. That’s not good enough. Reporter: It seems like this was your worst loss… Leyland: Yeah we stunk period. We stunk and that’s not good enough. This stuff has been going on here before and it’s not going to happen here. We had a chance to take a series. I’m not talking about anyone in particular. I’m talking about the team, myself, the coaches, and everybody else included. It’s my responsiblity to have the team ready to play today, and they weren’t ready to play. They were ready to get on the plane and go to Oakland. If they won it was okay and if they lost it was okay. That’s not good enough The Tigers went 12-3 right after that. Coincidence? Maybe, or maybe not. But I think that Leyland was brutally honest, and it certainly didn't hurt his team. should have hired leyland. of course, he's not a moneyballer, so that wouldn't be sufficient either.
  7. yes, it's remarkable. 2nd in the NL in singles/ab. but, as anyone who knows baseball said, this team would fall apart after they stopped overachieving w/risp... the cubs shouldn't be giving anyone credit. the padres had to do very little to sweep this series. that's a reflection on the cubs terrible approach at the plate and players throwing baseballs all over the diamond... I wouldn't be surprised if they remained 2nd in singles all year long. The one thing this offense can really do well is get singles, and we see the results, which is why I've been saying for a long time that the Cubs need more power, which gets shot down by the calls for more walks.
  8. good post. there's not much that can be done w/ the rotation. like you said, they yanked rusch and williams when they struggled, and brought up the kids many have been waiting for. the area that baker hasn't addressed is the lack of platoon with jones and pierre. i can understand if he gives pierre more time, but they need to platoon jones.
  9. I can't start rooting against my team after 31 games.
  10. also, bynum = macias dusty has to love his versatility. dude's here to stay.
  11. baffling move. would have liked to see the Cubs give Restovich more of a chance instead of giving him only 12 ab's. do these guys pay any attention to the stat sheets? this team needs more power. not a bunch of slap hitters. if they looked at the stat sheet, maybe they'd recognize pierre and jones are good against righties, but awful against lefties. start platooning!
  12. You do realize that he's batting .311/.363/.432 against righties this year. It's lefties he's struggling against at .140/.178/.140 Murton is .246/.325/.348 against righties. boy would have never thought that. just figured he sucked against both. perhaps they need to platoon him w/ hairston. where's grissom nowadays?
  13. too early. wood replacing hill is one helluva upgrade. the offence is starting to show a little life. they can hit plenty of singles, but nothing else. gotta give sd some credit too. they've won 9 in a row, ya know.
  14. That 04 outfield combined for about 100 HRs - I'd be stunned if the 06 outfield combined for 50. I understand that this is a different kind of team, but that's still a lot of offensive production tossed to the winds. no doubt they lost slugging, but everyone wants guys who take walks.
  15. nO. maybe they'll deal him off like they did with lawton.
  16. the big difference between the two teams is that the 04 team had a few more sluggers. the 06 team will probably get a lot more singles.
  17. hmmmm lee 04 v. lee 06. even tho he's hurt, lee 06 is much better now walker/grudz 04 v. walker 06. walker 06 is off to a hot start. gonzo/nomar v. cedeno. considering nomar played 30 games or so. cedeno aram 04 v. aram 06. aram's off to a slow start, but give me aram 06. alou v. murton. alou was a superior slugger, so alou, patterson v. pierre. both suk. sosa v. jones. obviously sosa barrett 04 v. barrett 06. give me barrett 06.
  18. dang schmidt tomorrow! well, got 12 on tonight. need some more timely hits and extra base hits. oh and some pitching would help.
  19. that's not the logic at all. you definitely don't want to dictate to them tho. People are in leadership/management positions for a reason. If the organization allowed Wood to assess and decide for himself last year, I'm concerned for the organization. I'd much rather have a player be mad and sit than a player get worse and waste even more salary. Fires are better off prevented. Well, I think Wood wanted to help his teammates make a run. You have guys like Lee, Walker, Nomar, ARam, Prior, Z, Maddux, and Dempster, who all have made the playoffs recently, and there's only so many chances to make the playoffs. It seems Wood's implying he would have let his teammates down by packing it in. I don't think many of these guys wanted to give up in early August. This has to be taken into consideration as well. Management telling Wood to pack it in in early August could have really ticked off some teammates.
  20. not comparable whatsoever. enlighten me as to the difference. omg. is bochy shutting him down for the year? and young sucks. heck bochy might make as much as him. :) young sucks? He was bad in Texas but who isn't? He's a pretty talented pitcher who is emerging. ahhh my bad. i'm not following the game. am watching the clippers. i thought eric young was taken out. he plays for sd right? :)

  22. now you're trolling. I thought he was using humor to point out the ridiculousness of CubfaninCA assertion that just because a player gets paid more, means he should get to decide what he does, even though the franchise invests the money in him and should call all shots that might affect his future health and well being. I said "depends on the situation." Pretty convienient caveat. Is that when ever you decide the situation applies? Baseball's a situational game. An authoritative approach is unwise, especially when you're dealing with multi-millionaires who can leave you for the Yankees, Red Sox or Dodgers.

I said "depends on the situation." There's truth to that - abusing Beckett to win the world series was probably a good decision for the marlins. Using wood out of the pen was a bad decision. if bartman doesn't screw the cubs, then it's a bad decision. gotta gamble sometimes. the cubs gambled away the first month of april 2006. at least we're seeing marshall, guzman and hill. :)
