  1. Hendry is not working on a limited budget. He's working with a huge budget. It's his fault that he tied up so much money as to make it tight already while the team is still in need of upgrades. And it doesn't help that part of that budget is being spent to pay people to play elsewhere, peole he foolishly guaranteed contracts to when it was well known that the team was for sale and future payrolls were in doubt. I don't think the Cubs really have any outrageous contracts other than Soriano. And I've always believed Soriano was a desperation publicity move by the Trib in their waning days. Bad contacts given by Hendry are as follows; Zambrano, Soriano, Fukudome, Miles (ta ta), Grabow, Hawkins, Eyre, Howry, Jones, Blanco, Neifi, Burnitz, Remlinger That's all that comes to mind. *current roster* Forgot about Fuku. I don't think Grabow or Zambrano have outrageous deals.

  3. I agree that this move opens the door for Baker to move into the super sub role with the team but I have this funny feeling that this trade isn't going to open the door for Theriot move to 2B, but the opening to close the Castillo to the Cubs, Burrell to the Mets, Bradley to the Rays trade we've heard so much about. I hope I am wrong, tho. Theriot is the opening day SS. I just can't imagine Castro would start in the big leagues. I'd rather have Castillo than Burrell in the Bradley deal, at least Castillo may have some use on the Cubs.
  4. I don't think Hendry can offer Padilla 10 million bucks even if he wanted to.
  5. I like it. Hendry and Beane like to make deals, don't they?
  6. 2008 draft is probably the biggest reason. Throw in what appears to be a great 1st rounder in '09 (Jackson), and smart international signings (Castro, Lee), and trades (Burke, Archer, Gaub) and we have what appears to be a promising system.
  7. They have to trade Bradley before they can do anything. It seems like this happens every year with the Cubs. First it was Sosa, then Marquis, now Bradley. Who will we have to trade next year before we can sign anybody?
  8. A lot of people on here seem to forget 2009 ever happened. Harden was the WORST starter on our team and was shut down with shoulder issues at the end of the season. Given the Cubs financial state they couldn't risk paying him 9 or 10 million if he accepted. I'd love the Cubs to have an unlimited budget but they don't and Harden isn't a an asset at that type of salary.
  9. Harden just isn't an asset at a high salary. He isn't durable enough. I think last year is a pretty good indicator of what Harden will be in the future, assuming his shoulder doesn't implode. I don't think his stuff is quite what it used to be, and it suffers even more when he actually has to pitch every 5 days. I was excited when we got the guy, but Harden is a nice complementary piece if you have a lot of pitching depth. He isn't an ace and doesn't deserve to be paid like one. I hope the Cubs can sign the guy at a reduced salary but for now I think they made the right move.
  10. I'm trying to decide if Vitters, Jackson, Lee, Marshall is better than the package Cleveland got for Lee. I think Toronto would want someone like Soto or Marmol to be the headliner. Maybe Marmol, Vitters, Jackson, Lee?
  11. You gotta give the Cubs scouts a lot of credit for some of these trades in the last few years. Ceda, Burke, Archer, Gaub were all guys with underwhelming numbers when we traded for them. The trades combined with Wilken's drafting have me feeling pretty good about our scouting department.
  12. I don't remember where I saw it, but a baseball scout used the term "Hanley Ramirez" to describe Starlin Castro. I'd be careful about trading "anyone in the organization". I think that's probably wishful thinking. I'm really excited by Castro but the odds that he becomes a top 5 player in baseball like Hanley are incredibly slim. I'd be extremely hesitant to deal him but for a guy like Halladay you have to make that move IMO.
  13. I'd give up anyone in our organization for Roy Halladay. Our rotation would immediately become the best in baseball, especially if Lilly is fully recovered. I just don't think this happens because we'd need to sign Halladay long-term to justify giving up our top prospects and I doubt Ricketts wants to hand out an enormous contract anytime in the near future.
  14. I think that's a little harsh. Would anyone here seriously not deal either one of those guys for Granderson straight up? I honestly wouldn't trade either of them, probably. I'd have hesitations about Castro, but I'd ultimately do it. I'd deal Vitters for Granderson in a heartbeat.
  15. I think that's a little harsh. Would anyone here seriously not deal either one of those guys for Granderson straight up?
  16. Who closes if we deal Marmol? The only cheap closing option I see as a FA is Brandon Lyon.
  17. Would you guys do Bradley and Cashner for Jackson?
  18. Is there a hotter prospect right now than Castro? Seems everywhere I look his name is being mentioned. Let's hope the kid can handle it. Last year's "it" guy was Lars Anderson and he fell flat on his face.
  19. Looks like insurance if Bay leaves. Decent move, but I'm not going to erect a statue of Epstein because of it.
  20. I wouldn't say Getz is worthless. He's still young enough that he could turn into an average or slightly above average 2B. I don't like Teahen as an everyday RF but as a "super-sub" he could be pretty close to what Derosa was to the Cubs for two years. Seems like a pretty fair trade.
  21. Meh, if he's back in April this isn't really a big deal at all. Even before free agency has started the Cubs have options to fill that role for a month. Nothing to worry about at the moment.
  22. plays world's smallest violin for the great fans . Some of us don't want to trade Bradley for pennies on the dollar and have to either hope Sam Fuld/Ty Colvin becomes a adquete baseball player immediately or Jeremy Hermida turns into Jayson Werth redux at roughly 7.5-10 mill per (once you factor in Bradley's salary). But it has to be the fact I play too much Xbox. Is that really much worse than bringing bringing back Bradley? He was a below average fielder, hitter, baserunner, and apparently a pain in the ass as well. Bradley just isn't anywhere near the asset some here are making him out to be.
  23. I think the "Keep Bradley" crowd is underestimating how disliked he was on the Cubs. This is obviously an assumption on my part but I think many of the problems Bradley had were behind the scenes. When Lou suspended him for smashing the gatorade machine he hinted that it was one of numerous transgressions. It appears to be a situation where he absolutely has to be shipped out.
  24. With all the positive press regarding many Cubs prospects I don't see how many seem to believe that we're still a bottom 10 system. I'm really excited about the talent in the minors for the first time in forever. Also, when is Wilken going to get a little more credit? Just in the last few years he's brought in guys like Cashner, Vitters, both Jacksons, Flaherty, Lemahieu, Carpenter. Seems like a pretty nice haul for a guy who has taken a lot of criticism.
  25. i'm assuming that when you say "inferior", you mean "better at baseball" You'd take guys like Wood, Greene, and Crosby over Theriot?
