  1. I'm a little surprised the Cubs didn't beat that offer on Papelbon - they could have done so pretty easily. You have to assume his salary had a lot to do with it.
  2. Wow, another serious screw job on Storen. He absolutely doesn't deserve to have to give up his job to Papelbon - he's a better pitcher.
  3. How bad would Schwarber's defense have to be to make you better off starting Ross?
  4. I would love to see Castro and a B prospect like Johnson for Gausman, but I assume the O's would want a lot more than that. Hearing some buzz about Mike Leake as a rental target, and that might be realistic. Leake might be the best second-tier starter on the market, and the cost shouldn't be astronomical.
  5. Baez hitting .220 with his usual power would also be a huge upgrade over what we're getting.
  6. Man, Schwarber... He sure looks like real deal.

    Castro

I like that idea, even to take it a step further, since there is a very low chance that the cubs can pick up a bat, why not consider have KB doing some LF Coghlan doing a little CF (against pitchers he crushed in the past only) and look at the splits and have Castro play vs. pitchers he has a fantastic track record against only. On those Days Baez can slide to 3b. I think there's some merit to that idea, but if I were to do so I'd probably play Bryant in CF and Coghlan in left. I think with very little repitition Bryant would actually be a better CF than Coghlan if he isn't already. In fact, you could even play Bryant in CF against RHP if Fowler continues to struggle from the left side, with Baez at 3B on those days.

    Castro

Just bear in mind, Castro over the last three months has had a worse OPS than Baez did last year with his 40% K-rate and .150 BA. It's not as if it's any great risk not having him in the lineup until Baez or LaStella could be ready to play. He's been among the very worst hitters in all of baseball this season. The problem, of course, is that it makes absolutely no sense to trade a guy in that position - you'll get minimum value back. But how can you keep playing him when you're trying to get into the postseason? I think the answer is to promote Baez as soon as gets his timing back, play Russell at SS and Baez at 2B 90% of the time, and keep Castro around as a bench player. Maybe in the offseason the stink of his performance this season will be easier to dismiss as an aberration than it is when we're right in the middle of it, and you can get a bit more in trade.
  9. Man - wherever you play this kid, you gotta play him. He can seriously swing the bat.
  10. It would be a mistake to count on Schwarber to bail out the offense, and not just because he's a rookie. Until the Cubs commit to using him in left, he's likely only going to be play 40% of the time. His catching is not major-league ready. As soon as he's healthy and gets his timing back, Baez needs to get a shot. He almost literally could be no worse than Castro and Russell have been the last month.
  11. Castro finally below 600 OPS. Did they stop the game and give him the ball?
  12. No gun that I can see, but Soriano looks pretty decent. Slider moving big-time.
  13. That felt like a real turning point after all the fluky, ridiculous BS that went against the Cubs in the season series. For once the Cubs were scoring on fluke fair balls and horrendous throwing errors. Maybe the demons will be exorcised a little now. I am a little worried about Motte, though. You saw what the Cardinals did - they were up there hacking from the first pitch because they know the fastball is the only pitch Motte can get over. Even most of their outs were rockets.
  14. God, I love that cutter. Those last 2 swings...
  15. Arrietta has about 6 plus pitches so it's hard to choose, but I think that cutter s my favorite.
  16. Arrieta's last 4 starts: 29 IP, 16H, 2 ER, 2BB, 23K, 0.56 WHIP
  17. Replay that last pitch to Reynolds. How many 92 MPH pitches have movement like that? It's just sick.
  18. Huge AB for Bryant here. Nothing pitcher, lefty, bases jammed.
  19. This is why you pulled Arrietta after 8 last time. He's under 40 pitches and this is a huge game - he doesn't have his best stuff today, but you leave him in there as long as he's effective.
  20. Nothing wrong with Denorfia if he can be utilized properly (platoon and PH) - he's a pro hitter and solid glove.
