  1. I don't think 2009 was what Jim Hendry (or anyone else) expected out of Soriano. He sucked severely and didn't earn even 25% of his salary, IMHO. It seems like Soriano has just as much trouble with routine balls hit right at him. This is a good point. I mean, who turns down $20 mil a year? Is Soriano supposed to say, "Actually Jim, I don't think I'll be productive enough to live up to that contract. I don't want to make you look stupid, so why don't we work out a more affordable deal?" I mean [expletive], if Hendry offered me a contract like that I'd accept in a heartbeat. Then I would proceed to put up a .004/.006/.009/.015 line, and everyone in the world would hate me and the GM for giving me such a contract. But, I wouldn't care at all because I would be filthy rich.
  2. Don't hold your breath for that .350 OBP. Considering he could barely get on base that often in his prime, I don't see how he's going to do it as he declines.
  3. Wait.... Aramis is injured? What?
  4. The top 5 hitters in both those lineups are pretty nasty. Except for Upton.
  5. Let's not forget Stevie Eyre. I find Lou's usage/hatred of Marshall to be extremely comical, though. I'm actually very surprised that Marshall is still a Cub considering how his career is basically going to waste. Seems like he'd be much better off going to some shitty small market team where he can make 30 starts and play a prominent role.
  6. Cocaine use and body size really have very little connection. Coke doesn't make you small, it's just that when you're on coke you have no appetite. Thus, if you do coke alot, then you typically won't be eating alot. That's not always true, though. There are plenty of really fat cokeheads out there. And also... I'm not sure how being muscular disqualifies someone (Byrd) from being a cocaine user. Tons of athletes use stimulants for performance-enhancing reasons, including using them when they lift weights. Of course I'm not accusing Byrd of doing coke, I'm just saying the size of a player's biceps would not be something I'd base my suspicion on.
  7. My logic exactly. Wood very nearly had a no-hitter and many people feel that he should have. The other thing is that no-hitters are much more likely to happen as a result of a little luck than a 20k game. Like in Z's no-hitter for example... he didn't even have his best stuff that day, and didn't even dominate as much as you would expect in a no-hit performance. He just got a few calls, got people to chase a few pitches, and hitters hit the ball to the right places. A 20k game will not occur as a result of anything other than complete nastiness on the part of the pitcher. Causing 20 major league hitters to strike out and only allowing 8 balls into play is [expletive] intense.
  8. Too bad we didn't sign Calero for dirt cheap like someone else did.
  9. Hey now, that's not nice. I feel bad for Hunter.
  10. I think I'd bring Ramirez back for awhile longer regardless. I think I'd keep him at least long enough to see if Vitters pans out as a Cub. As far as Lee, I would see how he does this season. But unless he puts up spectacular numbers again, I'd most likely let him go. Either that or sign him to a much cheaper 1 or 2 year deal.
  11. Oh God. But yeah... I am really glad we have Nady around as insurance considering the high probability that at least one of our three outfielders will not produce.
  12. Wasn't it against the Brewers in 2008 when Edmonds got a fastball thrown at his head for homering twice? I think it was at Miller Park when he hit the grand slam and the other homer. And it was Gagne, right? Interesting.
  13. I watched the 8th inning for the first time since 2003. It was still painful. My son who is now 10 watched it with me. He didnt realize how close the Cubs were to making he WS. Man... every time I am reminded of that game I cringe.
  14. Billy Beane strikes again.
  15. $5 million?!? I would have given him a one-year deal for 5 million. He would really make our lineup solid 1-8.
  16. When you think about it... our roster is not much different from 2008, besides the rotation. Our lineup is the same except Edmonds has been swapped out for Marlon Byrd, and DeRosa has been swapped out for a Fontenot/Baker platoon. Our bench and bullpen are both improved over 2008, aren't they? I think in 2008, we played above our ability level, and in 2009, we played below it. I think 2010 will probably be somewhere in between those two years. But, with that said, it's still possible that we get some really good years out of some guys and put up a good season. This team doesn't really suck THAT bad, we just aren't super great either.
  17. We certainly are putting a great deal of emphasis on our bench this off-season. Not that Millar is going to make the team, but making our bench would probably be his ceiling.
  18. Having a "clubhouse cancer" on your team can affect the performance of other players. Not as much as some people think it does (like blaming a failed season on a single player, for example), but you can't say it's not real. The concept of team chemistry DOES exist.
  19. Hahaha yeah like 10 years ago... (actually '03 was his best year but still... long time ago) I rather have Theriot than Cabrera... They're about the same offensively, but Theriot is better defensively and Cabrera is going to decline as well... Cabrera last year defensively fell off the cliff and was HORRIBLE (-13.7 UZR/150) Theriot UZR/150 last year was 8.3 so you can compare the 2... At this point in his career, Cabrera does not hit as well as Theriot. At least as far as average and OBP. And I thought Cabrera was supposed to be good on defense?
  20. I would have no problem giving Prior a minor league deal or a league minimum contract.
  21. Agreed. But, if he could have been had for 3 mill, I would have signed him, traded Theriot and used him as a stopgap until Castro is truly ready. I would rather have Theriot than Cabrera, even if their salary was the same. Trading Theriot also would be pretty pointless. since he's probably worth more to us than whatever we would get in return.
  22. Didn't see this anywhere, forgive me if I missed it: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4874353 I wouldn't have minded Cabrera. We could've moved Theriot to 2B and improved our infield defense considerably. Not to mention, Cabrera has been pretty decent with the bat over the last several years. With that said, I'd still rather sign a starting pitcher if it was one or the other.
  23. I still don't understand what the problem was with Wuertz. We could have an awesome bullpen right now if "Lou's Doghouse" didn't exist.
