  1. Journalists should still use the two source rule even on Twitter for things like that. Should? Maybe. But in this day and age, that isn't realistic. We're talking about the media here. These guys are trigger happy for big news and make their living off of being the first guy to leak stuff to the internet. I guess sometimes being first takes priority over being accurate.
  2. We better not give Baez away for nothing. A reliever? Really?
  3. i'll probably cry too. not because of 107 years though. [expletive] i teared up on the way to work hearing the radio calls of the last out of game 4 this year. Well, even if it doesn't matter to you, it certainly matters to millions of other people. It is a big deal whether it should be or not. Even if it is just media hype... let's be honest... the media has an extreme amount of control over the way people think. It would be a major news headline all over the world.
  4. Okay, well, I guess we know where my thinking differs: I do care about the 107 year drought. It is a thing. If the Cubs win a World Series, that would have such an enormous impact on the lives of so many people. I mean, we're talking about 107 years of stress and heartache being released, finally. The [expletive] random number generators would stop being random. It will be like a, "when pigs fly" kind of thing. If you guys don't agree with me, so be it. But I am going to absolutely cry my eyes out when the Cubs win.
  5. Because they were a disappointment in 2009 and then flat out stunk until 2015. Not because they didn't win a WS. So you are implying that there is absolutely no correlation between the stigma surrounding the Cubs and our 107 year World Series drought? Come on.
  6. Ehhhhh, yeah. But what does that mean? I'm not sure if you're getting what I'm saying. Yeah, everybody knows the Cubs are good now. But, if this core of players doesn't win a WS, they will go right back to being the laughing stock of the league. Everybody will say, "See, it's never going to happen".
  7. I like Javy a lot, and I just want to see him get a full season under his belt the way Russell did this year. If it's not with us, then with a team like the Rays that will have little impact on us.
  8. I did NOT say that. If you want to disagree with me on something, that's fine, but don't disagree with me on things I didn't say. I merely asked the question, "Does adding Ross or someone like that win us a WS?" Basically I was just asking if you guys would be content if adding a Ross-caliber player was our top move this offseason. Nothing the Cubs do will be considered a success until they win a World Series. You guys know that, right? We will still be the joke of the league until we win. We've had plenty of good years. We won 97 games in 2008, and then went right back to being a joke.
  9. It might be a success comparatively speaking, but in the grand scheme of things, it is not. If winning 4 playoff games is the best this group accomplishes, it will be looked back upon as one of the greatest letdowns in MLB history, and will further solidify that the Cubs will always be doomed. Personally, I would probably hang myself from the marquee. The fact that the Cubs won more than zero playoff games this past season is not news to me. And Tim, I know. I'm not saying it's impossible for us to win with this rotation. I'm basically saying we don't totally know what we have. Lackey could suck, Arrieta could regress, etc. Unless you have a rotation like the Mets, there's no reason to be content.
  10. didn't the Cubs win 4 playoff games this year? Is that what you call success?
  11. I don't understand how some of you can feel so "set" with our current rotation. If Lackey gets hurt or turns out to be washed up, we are screwed. We are gonna be in the same position we were in this year, which is not having enough good pitchers to win playoff games. Hammel and Hendricks aren't terrible or anything, but guys, we are talking about building a dynasty here. We aren't the Oakland A's. We aren't trying to just get through another year. We're trying to take over the world.
  12. Because Lackey is old and Hammel and Hendricks aren't very good. As far as Soler, maybe it's just cuz I have a man crush on him, but I don't see him flopping. Sure, there's a chance he might not reach his absolute ceiling, but I think his worst case scenario is better than most people give him credit for. Just my opinion.
  13. Yeah, I wasn't so much comparing Soler and Gordon as players, just in the sense that Soler would be the odd man out. I would rather just keep Soler. Spending money on a corner outfielder right now doesn't seem wise.
  14. I just realized that Fowler completely blew away his career averages for at bats and games played last year. As far as Gordon, he was pretty good from 2011-2014, but he has also had some pretty mediocre years. I don't think I would take his 2015 over Fowler's, and I certainly wouldn't be in a hurry to give Gordon a big long term deal. I think it's pretty darn realistic for Soler to reach Gordon's level of offensive production in the next 1-2 seasons, and Soler is much better looking.
  15. If we can manage to get Javy 400 AB's as a utility guy, then my previous statement doesn't apply. That's probably enough to not stunt his development.
  16. I can't see Baez being a utility guy for us. Not at this point in his career. I think he is at a point right now where he really needs a full season of MLB at bats, whether it is with us or someone else. He needs that nice big sample size like Russell got this year.
  17. Uh, that is already true by default. All the pitchers that are better than Lackey have already signed besides Cueto, but we aren't signing Cueto. Unless we trade for someone.
  18. My biggest fear is that last year will turn out to be his last decent year. This is gonna look pretty silly if he puts up a 4.40 ERA or ends up on the DL or something. As far as his personality, I would be more worried if he hadn't already played with half of our organization before. If he was that big of a "clubhouse cancer", I'm guessing Theo, Lester, Ross, etc. wouldn't be down with this. On the plus side, he's not a Cardinal anymore. I'm still bummed that Price and Zimmermann turned out to be pipe dreams, though. I spent all year getting my hopes up.
  19. I love Baez, but as someone else said, I feel really nervous about having a Schwarber-Baez-Soler outfield.
  20. I will be pretty disappointed if Shark is our top FA signing. I will be more than disappointed if he shits the bed like he did for the Sox.
  21. My biggest problem with losing out on Price and Zimmerman is that it pretty much ensures in my mind that we are not getting another ace this offseason. Greinke will probably go back to the Dodgers, and Cueto is probably gonna get stupid money from somebody that we aren't willing to pay. If we end up trading Starlin for Tyson Ross or something along those lines, does that win us a WS? Sometimes I wonder why money is even an issue at all. We're talking about the Cubs winning a world series here. THE CUBS. Is that not priceless? Obviously, this is why I don't hold a position in any major league front office.
  22. Unless he's going to be our every day center fielder, I'll pass. I'm still on the Soler and Baez bandwagon. Castro we could trade, but even then, we don't need any more infielders. I don't think it's unrealistic for Baez to have a better year in 2016 than Zobrist, and for less money.
  23. Not just a ball, but two balls simultaneously.
