  1. I’m sure it’s all in Boras’s 1,000 page handbook. But yeah he has to bring in a good amount of ancillary revenue, like he’s one of the ~5 MLB players that’s actually known nationally to even not that big of baseball fans. He has national commercials with at least T-Mobile (I think?) few MLB guys have that and he definitely brings in more value/revenue than the typical player. Having him on the team probably helps the TV deal valuation as well.
  2. jesus christ it would be great if "sports reporting" was more about the reporting and less about being used to propagate leverage for the stupid front offices. It’s why Mark Gonzales is one of my favorite follows for Cubs stuff. He doesn’t speculate/push things, he just reports stuff as it happens. At least on twitter.
  3. Good, go wrap Machado up Phillies
  4. It is an incredibly deep class of FA RPs. Good thing we have Duensing and Kintzler making like $9 million........ Also it’s the first day of winter meetings and almost every team is rumored to want/need RPs, Buster is being pretty hyperbolic there. Plenty of RPs will be signing contracts soon enough. They’re probably all waiting on Kimbrel/Britton/Miller to set the market.
  5. That’s not the most ridiculous proposition in the world. IF he’s healthy enough to pitch 180+ innings and IF he performs just a bit better than his career averages, he’ll be a top 10 Cy Young candidate. It’s not real likely, but it’s better than a lottery ticket. It’s entirely possible he pitches like a very good pitcher this year but I doubt he touches 180+ innings. He only threw 40 last year, he probably won’t go more than 150. I could see him getting starts skipped early on with the off days or a 6-man rotation/Monty/Mills take a start of his at points through the year to manage innings.
  6. I bet you could get a Monty type guy for him, for what Monty was at the time of the trade. At least. Former highish rated prospect, current team doesn’t have a role for him. Like the Braves have some guys like this, Fried for example. Braves want/need a corner OF and Albies might be a SS with Swanson having surgery and just sucking in general.
  7. [tweet] [/tweet]
  8. The idea of trading Zobrist isn’t that crazy to me in the right sequence of move, those names mentioned as replacements are horsefeathering gross though. Like trading him gets a decent prospect, clears his money and let’s us add a good RP, Lowrie and Brantley I’m in for that sequence of moves.
  9. Even with this HOF that you suggest, Harold Baines should not be in it. Can you remember one memorable moment in his career? If you let Harold Baines in you have to consider people like Tim Wallach, Paul O’Neill, Kent Hrbek, Ray Lankford Agree. He shouldn’t be in but hopefully this is a sign that the backlogged guys who deserve to get in start getting in.
  10. Just like Philly bidding against Philly for Corbin and they “wouldn’t be out bid to get him.”
  11. Altman seems pretty credible, he usually isn’t rumor mongering. I’d say if he says something he at least has heard something and there’s a basis for whatever he says when it comes to something like this. Whether it’s ultimately right or wrong who knows, but him and most of the Cubs Insider guys (outside of Loxas who they just brought on) don’t seem to be in the fake rumors/baseless speculation game and trying to break things.
  12. I’m all for a bigger HOF and making it more of a mueseum of the game instead of letting the voters using arbitrary measurements of worthiness so I like this and hopefully it opens up the flood gates for more guys getting in.
  13. He claimed to have sources earlier in the offseason and he got the leak/report we had no money. Wonder if he’s hearing different now.
  14. We’re interested in Soria. As the 2nd relief pitcher added (if we assume we are adding 2) I’m fine with it. As the main one that would be underwhelming. https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-cubs-joakim-soria-20181206-story.html
  15. Yu appears to be working this trainer (chiropractor? The tweet mentions his spine and the guys twitter has a bunch of stuff on stretching/back/flexibility stuff depending on translation) who’s twitter handle is ElvisPresley624. Lol. I guess Elvis doctors are better than Gryzlo at least. https://twitter.com/elvispresley624/status/1071882691639881728?s=21
  16. If you assume the TV deal not being done/fucked up is the reason for the cash crunch he should be since he’s probably the guy overseeing that.
  17. Man it would be nice if Adbert and Steele could be considered real bullpen options at some point this year and at least look like they could have a Monty type role moving forward. Hopefully/I think Amaya and Hoerner can be solid role players/second division starters and Hoerner could moves fast and give us a real 2B/SS option next year. I also am irrationally high on Roederer, I think he’s going to be a solid player (maybe a Josh Reddick type platoon player with better defense/ability to play CF).
  18. I’m in for this. Or something like Schwarber and Q for an Indians pitcher or those two for Jon Gray
  19. Unfortunately it appears the Cat has been outed https://twitter.com/hotcubstakes/status/1071861432445272066?s=21
  20. Bryce absolutely helps. But they’re still going to have to way over pay him to come to sit around for a few years while everyone develops with no certainty of these prospects and them all like being more 2-3 win guys than anything else and my response was not about Bryce it was just regarding why the White Sox system is good but not great and lacks stars. It seems like most of the projections out there are talking about 2020 for them, with occasional talk of surprising in 2019. They’d have to go nuts in FA to surprise this year. Eloy was the only bat above A ball last year for them, Kopech already died and a bunch of their other prospects are pitchers so who knows with them. 2020 seems like the absolute soonest and that’s with a lot of stuff breaking right.
  21. So where is he ending up? Cleveland as part of a bigger package for Kluber or Bauer? Braves for pitching? Padres for Yates and Hedges? As for Treinen?
