  1. Ortiz and Ramirez are willing to take the old "intentional, unintentional walk" but the Cubs won't. They insist on swinging at pitches that are completely out of the strike zone. I don't know if they keep track but I'd bet the Cubs are near the league leaders in check swing strikes too.
  2. Personally I don't care which pitch they swing at if it is a good pitch to hit. If a hitter takes a belt high fastball right down the middle on the first pitch there is a good chance he let the best pitch he's going to see that AB go by. Where the Cubs agressiveness kills them is they are agressive outside the strike zone and believe me, every pitcher in baseball knows you don't have to throw the ball over the plate to get the Cubs out. What the Cubs need to do is be agressive IN the strike zone. On the flip side, watch the patience of opposing hitters against our pitchers. By not swinging at balls off the plate it raises the pitch count. Why else do our starters usually hit 100 pitches somewhere between the 5th and 7th innings?
  3. There is no chance Pierre would accept arbitration. There is still a team stupid enough to give him a multiyear deal out there. Yeah and the GM's name is Jim Hendry. He fits the mold for what Jim and Dusty crave.
  4. Awesome. 3 groundball outs. Good time to go to work.
  5. I didn't say it was the right thing to do but he was effective out of the pen. And I don't think he can handle the 90 pitch outings this year. It's just my opinion but if he can't recover maybe he's throwing too many pitches for his surgically repaired shoulder.
  6. If he needs 5 or 6 days to come back from 80-90 pitch outings, don't you think he'll need a lot of time coming back from 20-30 pitch outings in the pen? I don't think a move to the pen is going to help a guy who needs long recovery times. No, I think it's much easier to recover from a 20-30 pitch effort than an 80-90 pitch effort. Remember they moved him to the bullpen last year because the 50-60 pitch mark was what they said was the problem. I just think it's better to build up his strength slowly out of the bullpen. Plus I think it's better for him in the long run.
  7. Did he hurt it on the fall yesterday or is it just a recurring thing that comes and goes? Apparently, it's been bothering him. Don't interrupt my Dusty bashing with facts. (just kidding)
  8. I don't think Wood is washed up as a starter yet but I do think he should be in the bullpen the rest of this year. I think coming off surgery his shoulder just can't take starting every 5th (or 6th ot 7th) day. I know he doesn't want to because he's in his walk year but in the long run he'd be better off to do it, get healthy and sign a low base, high incentive one year deal with a team for next year. (Hopefully the Cubs) Then pitch his way to a big contract next year.
  9. But, you're also taking what is being said out of context. It would have been fine with most if Jones sat last night against a lefty and then played today against the righty. To do it backwards is just plain stupid (assuming that he's just getting a day off and isn't actually hurt). We've been calling for some sort of platoon for him all along. I for one was hoping for a logical L/R platoon, not the backward one he's in yesterday and today. And he gave Barrett the night off against a lefty and is playing him today against a righty.
  10. I like that lineup. It makes sense. Which is why it will never happen with Dusty managing. True. More annoying fun facts...... Cubs lead off hitters have drawn a total of 13 walks. Cubs #2 hitters have drawn a total of 8 walks. That's a total of 21 walks from the guys who are supposed to set up the most productive run producers on the team. No, not for June and not for May. For the entire season. How easily accessible is this information? I had no trouble. How important is this information? I think it's extremely significant. Why doesn't the management team of the Chicago Cubs know or care about this stuff? I have no idea. The one stat I can't seem to find is how many GIDP's the #2 spot in the order has hit into. I'd be real interested to know this. Where's Fred when you need him? Dude, Dusty has stats the rest of us haven't even heard of.
  11. I would rather Dusty would have played Barrett against the LHP last night and gave Jones the night off. Then sit Barrett today against the RHP and play Jones. Just the opposite of what Dusty is actually doing by sitting Jones against the RHP today. Our manager is a moron.
  12. WAIT!!! I forgot about that 9th inning double last night by Mabry. That is good for a weeks worth of 0 for 4's.
  13. I was about to post the exact same thing. It better not be a rest issue, because that's just plain dumb. Did he hurt himself falling down on that error yesterday? It's probably a day game after a night game thing. Too bad Dusty doesn't realize that Jacque isn't a catcher. Unless Jones is in the hospital there is no good reason for this.
  14. Play Jones against the LHP lasty night and sit him against the rookie RHP today? Yeah, makes perfect sense to me. :x

  16. That tells me Hill is forever a AAA pitcher. Everytime he has come up here he has royally sucked. They should have dealt him when "everyone that called mentioned his name". How Hendry ever tagged him as an untouchable defies logic. How can you write anyone off completely after a small amount of scattered starts in the majors? I think it could be in his head and he just needs to get consistency with his control like he has in the minors. I think he could be a good back of the rotation guy if he's given a long-term shot. A two pitch pitcher in which his out pitch, he can't consistently throw for strikes and a fastaball that is medicore at best. Doesn't look like a recipe for success to me. Maybe in AAA but not the big leagues.
  17. Too much positivity in this thread. As well as Jones has been hitting of late, he still can't throw.

  19. Why are there no threads on Jacque Cousteau around here?
  20. There was an article in the either the Sun-Times or the Trib, forget which, during the off season in which Hendry stated that Walker was 3rd on the Cubs depth chart at 2B behind both Neifi and Hairston. That told me all I needed to know about Hendry. How anyone can look at the numbers and come to that conclusion shouldn't be a GM for a major league ball club.
  21. They don't let you steal first base.
  22. Did Neifi die?
  23. Gary Gaetti left a cheeseburger on 3B one day while playing for St. Louis too.
  24. St. Louis won't miss a beat without Pujols. Everything they touch turns to gold while everything the Cubs touch turns to...well, raw sewage. They could sign Jose Macias to replace Pujols and he'd probably win the triple crown. The Cards will win 95 games but about 88 would win it.
