They are aware Tucker is only under contract for 1 year, right? Asking for a 3-3.5 fWAR 3B, whom the Cubs have no backup for, and who is under control for 3 more years and a first round pick who has rocketed up prospect boards is a bit absurd.
A lot of ifs, but if the Cubs attain Tucker, while keeping Seiya, and manage to move Cody+ for Castillo, they're 1 back end bp arm away from actually a pretty scary team.
Yeah the guy who drastically overpitched his peripherals when he again could have paid like 1M for David Robertson whose performance was backed by better peripherals
Coming off the only time he has struggled. It's like Jed just can't take talent, he has to find guys who are coming off injury, coming with major question marks, coming off down years. He just refuses to take the talent in front of him.
So here's what I don't get. Why would Jed even make this comment? Now fans hate you more because you didn't even try to get a generational hitter. If you weren't interested in a generational hitter you probably shouldn't be a GM. All I can think is that he's covering for PTR and if he's going to that extent to cover for him, his job is in absolutely no jeopardy.
Who cares? He's a historically great hitter, who at age 26 is extremely likely to be a first ballot HoF player as long as he doesn't start to fall apart physically.
This is going to be another year where they buy a guy with significant questions marks for like 8M when if they had just paid 10 or 11M they could have had Robertson who is solid basically every year isn't it?
I'd argue it actually makes the team worse as Amaya has flashed upside Kelly can't touch. With that said, I'd be shocked if he was dfa'd and as little as I think of Jed, even I think he's not that dumb.
Except that while one guy slightly underperformed his contract only putting up 2.2 fWAR the other was amongst the worst SP in baseball posting 117 innings of 6.23 ERA ball. One was a solid but over paid everyday starter, the other was a disaster on a big contract that actively hurt his team . They are not the same just because they're both overpaid.
It's something i suppose. Still one starter to pencil in ahead of Taillon/Boyd and one 8th/9th inning pen arm and some kind of bench bet away from feeling ok about this offseason.
This. Right now your ML Bench is something like Thaiss/Mastrobuoni/Canario/Vazquez/Mervis. You'd actively have to try and make a worse bench than that.
Yeah, but his bat plays a lot better at 3B. If you move him to 1B full time he becomes like a 2 fWAR player rather than the guy who has averaged almost 3.5 fWAR over the last 3 years.
If Cody+ prospect in maybe the Cristian Hernandez level get it done, sure. If Nico is your lead piece, there had better be something valuable coming back. Harry Ford I'm looking at you.
Not that I am in anyway advocating this, but I wonder given that we've heard about the Cubs supposed interest in Alonso on several occasions over the last two years, Is a Cody dump potentially a cap clearing move to bring in Pete? I don't want him anywhere near the 6-7 years he supposedly wants and I think he gets overpaid because HRs despite being no better than Santander with the bat.
