  1. Last year, when I was in playoff position most of the year it was largely because average pitchers were having better than average years. When I fell out at the end of the season it was because some of those pitchers (Washburn in particular) remembered and started pitching down to their true talent levels. And this year my turnaround was when my pitching (especially Vasquez) started coming around.
  2. Along with the obligatory "look."
  3. The only pitcher who there'd really be any justification to send down is Zambrano, since he's responsible for this mess and therefore should bear all of the consequences. It would be a shame for someone else to be in effect punished for Z's antics by being sent down for a fresh arm. But unfortunately that's baseball sometimes. One thought just crossed my mind as I was typing this. Put A on the 15-day DL with a phantom injury. He's in absolutely NO position to contest such a move; his only choice would be to STFU and take it.
  4. If Lou does something to get himself ejected and suspended today (as happened the day after Zambrano vs. Barrett) then comparisons to 2007 might be appropriate.
  5. You'll definitely want to bring your camera for that, eh? Then it will be Vance that Z slugs rather than a teammate. Or maybe it will be both. I wish I could get slugged by someone making 18 mil.... He'd certainly be able to pay the judgment on the lawsuit.
  6. A quick Google search showed an FAQ in the MLBPA portion of mlb.com. Dues are $50 per day during the season. http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/info/faq.jsp#dues
  7. I actually think that would be a good situation to bring him up under. He'd be able to get his feet wet at the major league level in a situation where there's no pressure to win, and the experience he gains this year might put him in a position to succeed from the very beginning next year. I think back to 2006 when the Cubs brought up Marshall and Marmol prematurely because of all the pitching injuries. They took their lumps that year, but then contributed to the 2007 division title. A lot depends on how well Jackson can mentally handle having some initial struggles.

  9. Not really a basketball post specifically but I didn't want to start a new thread for it. NC State has hired Maryland AD Debbie Yow to be its new AD. Yow is the sister of NC State's late women's basketball coach Kay Yow (OK, that's the basketball link that justifies using this thread :D ).
  10. It's the second day in a row he didn't start (although he did come in as a pinch runner and stay in to play SS yesterday).
  11. Unfortunately, at least at first Z will still be taking up a spot on the 25-man roster even when suspended; he can't officially be placed on the suspended list until MLB and the players' union complete their investigation. So in effect the Cubs will be playing with a 24-man roster and an 11-man pitching staff during a long stretch without an off day.
  12. Nothing like having a double-digit negative pitching start that's still better than your opponent's start.
  13. All the more reason to fire Lou NOW and hire Gonzalez before the Braves get to him.
  14. The pierogi got his job back. Supposedly that isn't because of any bad publicity but because they didn't follow proper procedures when firing him in the first place.
  15. The Cubs' offense wants me to win this week. They rolled over and played dead against Vargas last night to help my cause. Or maybe it's just because they suck.
  16. Sidd Finch's 168-MPH fastball.
  17. According to another story I found the play was first ruled an error but the official scorer changed the call to a hit after the game (he probably looked at a replay and concluded that the batter would have been safe anyway). So it all depends on whether CBS catches the change before the week's scores are posted as final. This could be the Roadkill equivalent of Galarraga's should-have-been perfect game. :D
  18. My matchup with Kevin seems bizarre enough I don't know who won. CBS shows Garland with 25 points and no earned runs, but other box scores show 4 ERs. CBS showed an error charged to San Diego but other box scores don't. According to the game story on the Padres' web site, with two outs and bases loaded in the first Padres' 3B Lance Zawadzki (in his first career start) double-clutched and threw late, allowing one run to score. Matt Wieters then hit a 3-run double. If the play was an error (which, from the description, it sounds to me like it should be) all 4 runs are unearned; if it was a hit all the runs were earned. It may be that the official scorer changed the original call and not everybody has corrected the box scores yet; if so I don't know what the direction of change was. And our matchup was close enough that the entire outcome hinges on this one play.
  19. He just made a birdie; maybe it's the start of a turnaround.I stand corrected.
  20. He just made a birdie; maybe it's the start of a turnaround.
  21. OK, enough. Get this thread back on topic. People shouldn't have to wade through this garbage to read the legitimate discussion.
  22. Keep your hands off my prospect. [-X (I realize you were just using that as an example.)
  23. I think you should be able to, as long as the player was in minor league baseball at the time of the last prospect draft. As you said, everybody had a chance and passed. Undrafted major league players become free agents after a waiver period; I think it should be the same for minor leaguers.
  24. The Pirates fired one of their mascots for criticizing the contract extensions for Huntington and Russell on his Facebook page. http://www.centurylink.net/news/read.php?id=17813493&ps=972%2C922&srce=news_class&action=3&lang=en&_LT=HOME_BANWR00L3_UNEWS
  25. I was thinking that Juan said (in the original prospect draft thread) that picking up currently available minor league players after the prospect draft was OK since everybody had a fair shot. I do know what you said was correct for last year (I improperly picked up a minor leaguer and then dropped him for that reason), but that was when we intended to have a prospect draft during the season. Once we decided to have a preseason prospect draft instead I think that changed the policy. Unfortunately, since Adam took the thread off on a tangent that resulted in it being deleted there's no way to look it up to see who remembers correctly. It may be that Brian e-mailing Juan is the best way to clear this up.
