    I don't think anybody's saying that the Cubs will be World Champions without Lee. They're saying that the Cubs could tread water and remain close without Lee, then make their move after Lee returns. And I think people are saying that it's REALISTIC to think that they could still win this year, not that it's DEFINITELY going to happen.

    I believe it was Dick Ruthven who was the other starter. And an obscure guy by the name of Rich Bordi, who I only remember because I have his autograph. Ruthven actually had more starts than Sutcliffe (of course, the Cubs only had Sutcliffe for about half the year). Rainey (16) and Reuschel (14) also were fairly regular starters. Bordi pitched in 31 games, but only 7 were starts.

    Totally agree. It's ridiculous but let's still go ahead and give everybody extensions! Actually one coach was fired after 2004. They waved goodbye to Wavin' Wendell.

    I believe you can only backdate a player to the last certain number of days of Spring Training, not all the way back to March 1.

    One of the leagues is a Yahoo head-to-head league with daily lineup changes. When setting my lineup today, I somehow overlook the fact that Odalis Perez is starting and leave him on my bench. All he does is pitch 6 innings with a 1.50 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 4 strikeouts, and a probable win (LA is leading 6-2 in the top of the 9th as I write this). And somehow, despite my stupidity, I'm currently winning my matchup this week 10-0 (I'm already 15-5 and in first place going into this week). So basically I'm Dusty Baker, but with enough talent to overcome my Dustiness. :lol:

    I agree with these points; I'm just saying that I think there's a reasonable chance of this happening. Everything seemed to come together in 2003 (until game 6 of the NLCS), snd so far it seems like they have this year as well. So far it seems like everything is coming together? Wood, Prior, Miller, Eyre and Lee are all hurt. Ramirez looks like crap. They're a few over .500 early, but you can't look at this team and say everything looks like it's coming together. My comment wasn't meant from the perspective of the performance of individual players; it was meant from the perspective of the team winning over 60% of the games, including coming from behind to beat the Dodgers after Lee left the game. Everything you said about specific players is true. However, Maddux has been out of the world, Dempster has been lights out, Barrett and Walker have hit very well, and Pierre and even Jones have shown signs of improvement the last couple of games. I'm not saying it's a given that this will continue (hence my use of the words "so far"), but I am saying it isn't much of a stretch to think it could continue, at least enough for the Cubs to tread water for a couple of months.

    I choose to remain optimistic about the situation, but those who don't are pessimistic, not trolls. Your comment suggests that being pessimistic about the situation constitutes trolling; it doesn't.

    He signed a very inexpensive contract with the Dbacks (I believe two years at only $1 million per year). At that price I'd be surprised if they don't keep him even if only as insurance against their own injury problems. They'd know that they could suffer key injuries just like anybody else, and at the cost I'd think they'd keep Clark.

    Change the first good to great, and change the second good to outside. If the first "good" is changed to "great," the second one remains "good." Great pitching would give the Cubs more than an outside shot.

    This ballclub, with Prior and Wood missing PART of the year, could have done very well. Remember, the 2003 team was below .500 in July and still won the division. This Cub team would not have won the division last year with all the injuries, but they could have tread water until July or August, then rallied to win the Wild Card and made big noise during the postseason. Comparing this year's team to last year's Astros is not at all a bad comparison; certainly not insane, as you think it is.

    According to Ron on the broadcast, except for the home opener they've been under 1,000 every game so far.

    According to tonight's radio broadcast, Ron mentioned that Wells is being held back. It sounded like he had a slight injury, but I don't recall specifically what it was. I got the impression he is only being held back a day or two.

    Yep; that makes me a happy camper. :D At least when you go down this week you can take some comfort knowing that it's due to an ageless wonder helping the Cubs win. it's talk like this that inspires my team to jack three homers and a couple of doubles w/in a half an hour span to make your 20+ point lead a distant memory. lesson learned. There may be something to this. Today I keep my mouth shut, and I take back the lead. looks like i'll be up a bit going into my four start day tomorrow. could be up even more, but my team is 0-4 w/ 4 k's w/ the bases loaded tonight. :evil: You are up a bit now, and I didn't even run my big mouth today. So much for that theory. :D

    Despite what some people are saying, the season is NOT over. This is a huge blow, but good teams can overcome huge blows, and the Cubs have shown that they are a good team this year. The other players simply must step up and earn their salaries. The key is to tread water and be within striking distance. The second half of the season could be very good, once Lee and the injured pitchers are back. If the current players can't get it done, Hendry will make a move. He's shown that in the past. Reason for frustration and disappointment? Yes. Reason to mail in the season? No. I simply refuse to accept a third consecutive lost season due to injuries without putting up a fight.

    I doubt he could play every day, so we could also sign Jim Hickman to back him up. :D

    You're right; it wasn't meant seriously. It wasn't meant as a comment on Hoffpaur at all, rather on the fact that some people seem to jump to conclusions any time a player shows a sudden jump in power.

    I think they could have overcome the loss of either Pujols or Rolen but not both. I agree that Lee is our Pujols; Ramirez is our Rolen. We don't even know yet if Lee is going to miss an extended period, but if so Ramirez, Walker, Barrett, and others still give us a fairly good offense.

    I'm just confirming that I did agree to that. We discussed it by PM, and I didn't think he's gaining an unfair advantage (since you don't know in advance which pitcher will ultimately have the better start).

    I think even the division title is still within reach. Lee's injury (if serious) is a disappointing setback, but not a death sentence. Good teams overcome injuries to key players (e.g. the Cardinals last year with Rolen); other players step up. So far this is a good team, and I think they can overcome it. It won't be easy, but it's well within the realm of possibility.

The Cardinals were without one of their top players most of last year (Rolen), and they still ran away with the division. With good teams other players step up when a key player gets hurt, and I think there's a good chance the Cubs can do that. That's if Lee is even out for an extended period, which we don't know yet.

    And now he has broken the club record for consecutive saves. Signing him was a great move by Hendry.

    how on earth does a manager have another stick on the bench after 31 innings of baseball? Now pinch hitting, number 87 - Jose Macias. [note]Dusty was not the manager[/note] Obviously. After all, if Dusty were the manager, Macias would never have still been available after 31 innings. :lol:
