  1. the comma probably has better intangibles though. maybe brings more in terms of team chemistry ? tiny strike zone. Make him a hitter and watch the walks pile up. The second coming of Eddie Gaedel. :D
  2. MLB has entered into an agreement with Sprint/Nextel to make broadcasts of all games' radio broadcasta available over cell phones for $5.99 per month, starting in mid-August. This sounds similar to Gameday Audio except for being over the cell phone rather than the Internet. This is not an exclusive deal, so other cell phone companies could offer this service as well.
  3. I think you meant January; I know he didn't sign during the season. that was weird, yes, Jebruary, or smarch, can't remember. January 6, to be exact (I looked it up on baseball-reference.com). If he signed one day later, it would have been exactly one month after re-signing Grudz.
  4. Hopefully the team can celebrate by getting back on the winning track.

  6. Hendry and Baker obviously did a good job of getting their families and friends to vote in the poll. :D
  7. Right. He was signed for 2004, mainly as insurance in case Grudzielanek didn't re-sign. Wasn't Grudz already signed for 2004 when Walker was signed. It's my recollection that Walker was signed to play some second, first, third, and left. the Grudz got hurt and Walker became the starter. When Grudz returned, Walker was never given any playing time at the other positions. Actually, I think you're right; I got it backwards. I think Grudz was re-signed because the Cubs didn't know at the time if they'd be able to sign Walker, and when they did sign him they'd already promised the starting 2B job to Grudz.
  8. The topic is already being discussed here: Premium Non-Premium
  9. Fortunately they are still six games ahead of the Smokies for the season (11 ahead for the first half, currently five behind for the second). So if they can end the slide and start winning again it may simply come down to whether Chattanooga can overtake Tennessee. Ironically, the Jaxx end the season with a five game home series against Chattanooga, so they may be in the position where losing would help their playoff chances and winning would hurt. :D
  10. I know this has been mentioned before, but I don't recall the answer. If Chattanooga wins both halves of the season (they're currently one game behind Tennessee), does the other playoff spot go to the team with the next best record for the entire season, or just the second half? If it's based on the entire season, the Jaxx are very much alive despite the recent slide (since they had such a big lead over all of the teams except for Chattanooga during the first half).
  11. Woulda been handy in 84. How so? I thought SD got home field due to a stupid rotation. That's right. Back then, home field advantage alternated between the East and West divisions from year to year. It had nothing to do with which team had a better record. yea, but it was the east's turn and the cubs had to give up a game because of the lack of lights. The east had home field advantage the previous year (Los Angeles vs. Philadelphia). I verified that by looking at the box scores on http://www.retrosheet.org.

  14. Of course, the losing streak actually started the game before the Carolina series started, so if my powers to jinx can reach them in another city my powers must really be strong. :D
  15. I didn't think to check every pitch, but I did check quite a few, and I think the fastest I saw for Mathes was in the mid-80s (I didn't actually see your post until I was back). Campusano didn't pitch tonight.
  16. I'm going to tonight's Djaxx game at Carolina. Hopefully I'll bring them more luck than I did Friday. If Patterson has another rough game in the field, then you know I'm a jinx. :D
  17. West Tenn is now in 4th place, closer to last than to first. :(
  18. We wouldn't need a Rusch prototype, since the genuine article is still under contract for one more year. Why settle for an imitation when we have the original? :D
  19. By winning this week, with four weeks remaining I have now exceeded my win total for all of last year.
  20. Jackson injured his forearm last night and is questionable for at least the next couple of days. Accordingly, I moved Gonzalez from Utility to 1B and activated Beltre at Utility.
  21. If the Cubs were 9.5 games out and only one or two teams were ahead of them, I'd think that there would be a chance considering how putrid the league as a whole is. But with 11 teams ahead of them, no way Jose.
  22. He actually had a good year on defense in 2004 as well; there was a lot of talk about how much he improved at the time. Maybe last year was the exception.
  23. You won both rounds of Survival Football, but I don't recall whether you won this as well.
  24. Reporting on one game at the same time you're pitching in another. That's multi-tasking. :D
  25. That would make me upset too. What reason do you have to believe that is what happened? Because Hendry said so himself on an interview on WGN TV during a telecast after the trade. I think we need to send up the Bruce signal for clarification. To paraphrase John Kerry in Jim Hendry's position, "I wanted prospects before I didn't want them." I suspect that's what Hendry meant, but I believe the way he actually said it was that he could have gotten prospects. He seemed to confuse wanting something with actually being able to get it, which of course are two different things. I want several million dollars, but I ain't getting it. :D
