  1. I was also somewhat hamstrung by Dusty. He gave Guzman one too many starts last year for him to have been minor league eligible, so I had to find a spot for him on my keeper roster or else lose him. I love being able to blame Dusty for things. :D
  2. I would have offered you up a decent package for Jackson during the offseason. I'm probably not the only one. I should have thought about trying to trade him, but I was considerable behind in my planning for this year because of my mother's illness and ultimate death that there just really wasn't time for making more trades when I made my final decisions. Many league members posted their keeper rosters quite awhile back, but I didn't get to it until this month.
  3. Thank you. I have no idea why you released him, but I'm glad you did. It was a tough decision, but since Gonzalez stepped up last year, Garko showed a lot of promise in his late season callup, and we decided against adding the second utility position, it just became a numbers game and Gonzalez strikes me as having more power. Had we decided to add the second utility position I would have kept him. It's not my team, but I would have ranked them: Jackson Gonzalez Loney Garko I'd move Loney up a spot if the Dodgers weren't blocking him. I was really split between Jackson and Gonzalez; I think it could go either way. I was comparing them directly against each other, though, since neither of them are minor league eligible while both Loney and Garko are. That buys me some time to see how things unfold with them.
  4. Best minor league roster that includes the son of an NSBB member: Me, by a mile. :D

  6. I have so many 1Bs (Gonzalez, Garko, and Loney) that I released Conor Jackson (you can thank me any time, Tim). :D
  7. I have Liriano, whom is known to be out for the entire year due to TJS. Looking strictly at the letter of the law, I probably couldn't place him on my DL yet since he isn't officially on the major league DL (I don't think teams can place players on the DL this early). Thinking in terms of the spirit of the rule, however, it doesn't seem to me like I should need to keep a spot for him now on the active or reserve roster, which in effect would give me one less spot than allowed, just because he isn't yet on the major league DL. However, I'll abide by the ruling of the court. :D
  8. I liked my postseason trades better than my draft. I traded for some good keepers in Liriano (for next year and beyond), Webb, Ichiro, and Wells at the expense of sacrificing some early draft picks. Collectively, between my trades and draft I think I improved my team, plus I have some minor leaguers that should be stepping up (Marte, Garko).
  9. We can't trade Marquis yet. I believe we can if he agrees to it. The June 15 (or whatever it is) date is to trade him without his approval.

  11. No he didn't. There's no salary cap in baseball, and there is a luxury tax for high spenders, so it isn't any of $elig's business how much teams spend and on who.
  12. There's also a condensed version on p. 69 (Billy Williams chapter) of Few and Chosen, by Ron Santo with Phil Pepe (a 2005 book where Santo picks the greatest Cubs of all-time). EDIT: The full version is on pp. 38-39 (Rogers Hornsby chapter) of the same book. According to this version, here's what Hornsby actually said: To player before Williams: "Yom may get to Double A." To Williams: "You can play in the big leagues right now." To Santo: "You are going to play in the big leagues."
  13. He'll be going somewhere, namely the Cubs' bullpen. :D
  14. Indiana blew a double-digit lead and lost to Michigan State. :(
  15. I have one stud starter (Webb), one potentially solid starter (Reyes), one of the best closers (Ryan), two very good outfielders (Ichiro and Wells), a decent second baseman (Iguchi), and solid depth at both corner infield positions if a couple of youngsters live up to their promise (Gonzalez and Garko at first, Tracy and Marte at third). If they all have good seasons that will also give me my utility player and possibly some trade bait. I'm mainly looking for a few more starting pitchers, at least one more good closer, a shortstop, one more starting outfielder, and a catcher in case Mathis fizzles again. I have a bit less depth than some other teams because one of my keepers (Liriano) will be on the DL all year and another (Guzman) may be in the minors but doesn't qualify to be carried on my minor league roster during the off-season because damn Dusty gave him one too many starts last year. More needs plus fewer draft picks equals praying for good free agent pickups and promotions from the minors. :D
  16. a young guy, but not Z, who was already starting. I think i was pushing for Juan Cruz at the time. Estes did come up big in that start at the end of the season. It was Cruz that many of us wanted in the rotation, because he did well in 2001 before Baylor messed with him in 2002. He did start 6 games in 2003. IIRC he was tearing up Iowa, but Dusty wanted to keep the lefty in the rotation and Cruz only got his shot when Prior went down. I think I remember back to back Estes and Cruz games against the Astros one weekend where they each went about 6 IP 2 ER. Cruz started the year in the Cubs' bullpen and struggled, then was sent to Iowa and was 4-0 with a 1.95 ERA before being called back up. I do think it was when Prior met Giles that he came back up. You are right about Dusty keeping Estes in the rotation because he gave up tons of runs with his left hand, which apparently was preferable to giving up fewer runs with the right hand. :D
  17. My rookie card, after my 0-13 start my first year, may be worth pennies.

  19. I'm sure that can be done. It could even be done during the regular season if a team wanted to; a team isn't REQUIRED to use a DH instead of the pitcher (and, in fact, I believe there's a rule that if the DH replaces a player in the field the pitcher must bat instead of another player DHing for the rest of the game.
  20. I'd definitely trade either Ramirez or Young; I'm surprised you got two shortstops that close together. I'd keep Lugo because his eligibility at other positions makes him quite valuable as a fill-in on off-days or for injuries.
  21. At first I misread the thread title and thought it said Big Hurt. :D
  22. Im pretty sure that guy in the middle is not Kerry Wood. Definitely not Kerry Wood. That's Wade Miller. Yeah, looks like Miller to me. The error is from the original source, not mine. :D
  23. I sincerely hope you don't have a problem with the presence of foreigners on NSBB.   Maybe it's because you're as cold as ice and willing to sacrifice? Youre as cold as ice, youre willing to sacrifice our loveYou never take advice, someday youll pay the price, I know Ive seen it before, it happens all the time Youre closing the door, you leave the world behind Youre digging for gold, youre throwing away A fortune in feelings, but someday youll pay Youre as cold as ice, youre willing to sacrifice our love You want paradise, but someday youll pay the price, I know Ive seen it before, it happens all the time Youre closing the door, you leave the world behind Youre digging for gold, youre throwing away A fortune in feelings, but someday youll pay (solo) Cold as ice - you know that you are Cold as ice - as cold as ice to me Cold as ice Youre as cold as ice, cold as ice, I know, yes I know Youre as cold as ice, cold as ice, I know, oh yes I know Youre as cold as ice, cold as ice, I know, oh yes I know Youre as cold as ice...
