  1. Less important, yes. Irrelevant and expendable, definitely not. Chances are somebody will be injured at some point in the season, and the Cubs would certainly want Prior healthy by then even if he isn't by the start of the season.
  2. Nice to know you have magical insights into the future. The fact is that, other than a #16 seed beating a #1 seed, anything can and has happened in the tournament.
  3. Actually he's not a free agent until after 2008. He didn't have enough service time in 2002 to count, so he'll have five years (2003 through 2007) after this year.
  4. I agree. Just keep your eyes off of him in Roadkill. :D
  5. http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/pictures/NC04.jpg Future Cub? :D
  6. he did have perfect mechanics. he altered them. that's what led to the achilles injury, and it's all been downhill from there. It's late, but wasn't it the other way around? heh, i really wish i could explain this. i worded it exactly as i meant it. i guess i shouldn't expect anyone to believe it, but the way i worded it is correct - it's just that the reason was never released to the media/public (it has to do with a minor injury that led to altered mechanics that led to the achilles injury). source is a highly regarded injury expert trusted by many on this board..but i can't say more than that. i know it makes me seem kind of like a prick, sorry :/ In other words, it didn't come from the Cubs' training staff. :D
  7. I believe I read at the time of his signing that it was a straight minor league deal, without an NRI to Spring Training. He may be reporting directly to the minor league camp.
  8. Interesting; I hadn't realized that. I assumed the Cubs knew who they were drafting for the Reds.
  9. He was actually a Cub twice, the end of 2003 and briefly last year.
  10. Interestingly both Super Bowl teams have similar running back situations, the veteran starter leaving (by trade for the Bears and free agency for the Colts), leaving the youngsters (Benson and Addai) with the jobs full-time.
  11. I want him to go to Iowa. To continue developing he needs to play, not sit.
  12. The Pirates released Jody Gerut and the Nationals released Tony Womack.
  13. I too think a trade would be more likely than returning him. The last thing Tampa Bay needs is another outfielder. A few years ago the Cubs drafted Scott Chiasson from the A's, then when he didn't make the team they traded Eric Hinske to the A's for the rights to keep Chiasson (and got Miguel Cairo back from the A's as well). Something similar will likely be worked out between the Reds and D-Rays.
  14. The only reason the Cubs drafted him in the first place was to trade him. If they didn't have that agreement with the Reds they just would have passed. He wouldn't have been a Cub. If the Cubs drafted him, then LATER decided to trade him, it would be different.
  15. I disagree. I'm sure he's his family's favorite player.
  16. If he's called up late enough in the season that he's not in the top 17% of rookies in terms of service time, that keeps the arbitration clock from starting until 2008. If he gets called up late enough that he doesn't have a specified number of days of service time, that keeps the free agency clock from starting until 2008. Same general idea for both, except for arbitration its based on service time relative to other rookies (the "super two" concept), while for free agency its based on a set number of days on the major league roster (somehow 190 sticks in my mind). The Cubs sent Kerry Wood to Iowa at the start of the 1998 season specifically to buy an extra year before free agency; once the required number of days had passed they called him up quickly.
  17. He was around the same time as another highly-touted pitcher named Anderson (I forget his first name, but he was with the Mariners).Ryan Anderson? Yes, that's who I was thinking of.
  18. In the past it's been the same day as the NCAA pairings are announced but later in the evening. I don't know if that will still be the case now that the NCAA has taken over the NIT.
  19. My guess is that he either wins a spot in the rotation or else starts the season on the 15-day DL, perhaps staying behind in extended Spring Training or else going to Iowa for a rehab assignment.
  20. Madlock also asked for a multi-year contract. I'm not sure if Murcer had one as well, but Wrigley may have been willing to pay Murcer a higher annual salary but only on a one-year contract.
  21. He was around the same time as another highly-touted pitcher named Anderson (I forget his first name, but he was with the Mariners).
  22. That's exactly what it was. The Reds were afraid somebody else might take him before their turn, so they worked out the arrangement with the Cubs. The Cubs had no interest in him in the first place.
  23. In other words, he's destined to become a Bengal. :D
