That's true except for Iowa. Also, I don't think he actually played in the championship for West Tenn; I think that was the year he missed most of the second half due to injury. [/nitpick]

I agree Harvey or Burgess would have been a pick with much more upside, I think that pick had a lot more to do with the price tag then anything else And that's what pisses me off most about it. I agree 100% with you, a team that can spend 136 mil on soriano, 40 mil on lilly, 21 mil on marquis cant dish out a little extra money to a prospect with a high upside? It was very frustrating to watch I think the pending sale has a lot to do with it. All the big contracts were given out before the announcement. But the team was still for sale when they were given out, was it not? No, it wasn't. There was some speculation that the Trib might sell the team if they decided to sell off specific assets, but nothing had been decided back then. -
I also believe Chuck Rainey once had a no-hitter broken up in the 9th when he was with the Cubs, but I don't recall whether it was with 2 out. And Jose Guzman's first start as a Cub (1993) was a no-hitter bid broken up with 2 out in the 9th (Otis Nixon was the villan).

Interesting. I thought the idea was for Soriano to be a good influence on Pie, but it looks like just the opposite.

I'm guessing no, that it was the area between his wrist and elbow. If it were his elbow before I think it would have been stated that way.

Cubs.com is reporting that Guzman will not be able to throw for at least two weeks before rehabbing in Mesa. They don't indicate when he'll return to the Cubs.

You're lucky he made it thru 7. He had a good shot at negative points. His former teammate, Washburn, actually did put up negative points. Fortunately I had strong outings from El Duque and Webb to make up for it.

Soriano's finally starting to come through for me. I'm not doing bad considering my Wild Card pick has been a total washout.

I'm pretty sure the Cubs have, from time to time, held just 39, for one reason or another. They have. I think that's been more common during the off-season (to have room to add players to protect them from the Rule 5 draft), but I think it's happened during the season as well. I think there have been times they've traded a player on the 40-man for a player not on it, and they may leave the spot vacant until needed for a specific player rather than immediately adding somebody just to keep it full.

So it's MLB that is telling the Cubs what they can do? That's an interesting development. MLB doesn't have the authority to insist on that, since there's no clause in the CBA. All they can do is recommend; they have no power to enforce slot money.

He wasn't healthy, they released him early in Spring Training. I believe it was due to a back injury.

Yes and his attitude helps. One indication of his attitude is that, when he was sent back down earlier this season, he hurried back to Iowa to get there in time for the next game. Many players take all or at least much of the 72 hours they're allowed to report, but Pie didn't even want to miss one game. He wants to play, whether it's in the majors or minors.

I don't see Gallagher being sent down that soon, considering the Cubs consider it important enough to have 12 pitchers that they added Gallagher to the 40-man roster to bring him up. Sending Pagan back down seems like the most logical move to me; with Pie looking like he's back up to stay Pagan isn't needed, since Jones could fill in at center if needed. Another possibility, if either of them are still slightly banged up, would be to place Floyd or Murton on the DL. One way or another, if a move is made I'd bet that it is an outfielder that gets replaced. My first choice, of course, would be for Jones to be traded. -

Very true. It's different for me. As disappointed as I was about the ending, I prefer that to not having made the postseason at all (I looked at 1984 the same way). Similarly, as a Bears fan in football, I prefer them making the Super Bowl last season but losing to not making it in the first place. But just because I can look at things this way doesn't mean it's wrong for others who can't.
