    I wouldn't be surprised to see Theriot, Fontenot, and Cedeno starting. It just isn't worth the risk of aggrevating injuries for one game. The regulars could always be used as pinch hitters in key situations.

    I'm stuck with the Reds telecast on Extra Innings, and they're currently televising poker during the rain delay. They should know that the people tuned in at this time are baseball fans, so they should have baseball programming during rain delays. Oh well, I can watch the start of the Brewers-Cardinals game (which itself is delayed by rain, although only by about 5 minutes) instead.

    I would think that's likely, and I'd also expect them to keep Floyd out as well. Maybe Murton will start his first game back after all.

    I don't think he could be sent down without clearing waivers and without his permission. The former might happen; I doubt the latter would.

    I hope the White Sox DO get someone good, because that would weaken the Phillies and hurt their Wild Card chances. :D No kidding. People need to put things in perspective. The Phillies are much more of a competitor for the Cubs than the CWS, despite the rivalry. And to me it's really more of a fans' rivalry anyway. As far as the team is concerned usually their biggest rivalry is with the Cardinals and this year it is with the Brewers.

    I think tonight is the most important outing to date for him. If he still feels good tomorrow after going back-to-back I think that will be a true reason for optimism.

    Ultimately that's Lou's decision, though. The GM makes decisions about who's on the roster; the manager is in charge of lineup decisions. Technically the GM can fire the manager for refusing to go along with the GM's wishes, but I doubt that the Trib would allow Jim to fire Lou and commit the new owners to paying the remainder of Lou's contract.

    Pretty soon; classes start in about 3 1/2 weeks. It will be hard getting back into the swing of it after taking the summer off this year.

    Nobody's done so yet, so I started an NSBB football league on Yahoo. League ID 267280, password nsbb. I copied the settings from the NSBB league I was in last year. Head to head, 14 teams maximum (the one change from last year; the league I was in had 12 teams). Regular season runs from weeks 1 through 13, and playoffs (8 teams) are weeks 14 through 16. This way everybody plays everybody else exactly once, and the playoffs end before the last week of the NFL season when many NFL teams rest key players before the NFL playoffs. I have a live draft tentatively set for Saturday, Aug. 25 at 8:00 P.M. Eastern time, but that can be changed if desired. Registration for the NFL and college pick'em contests has also started. I'll establish groups for them within the next several days unless somebody else is interested in doing that before then.

    Agreed. It was one game. The Cubs still won 2 of 3, and I'll always be happy with 2 of 3 in a road series regardless of who the opponent is. 2 of 3 the rest of the way = playoffs.

    I'm not sure he'd quit during the season. I think it's more likely that he'd be shut down for the rest of the season, then retire during the off-season if nobody will sign him for next year.

    The comparison isn't just win-loss record (although that's part of it), but also where the Cubs stand in the divisional and Wild Card races. I think it's completely relevant to compare how close to first we are now as opposed to then.

    We now know that there really are callups, but totally unrelated to Pie and Kroeger being removed from the game (as mentioned in another thread, Murton and Cherry are being called up).

    Sounds like a false alarm. Apparently Pie and Kroeger were both removed with injuries.

    2003: 50-50, 3rd place in NL Central (5.5 games behind Houston), not in Wild Card contention. 2007: 53-47, 2nd place in NL Central (2 games behind Milwaukee), 3rd place in Wild Card (1 game behind Arizona). As the season gets closer to the end I think comparisons with 2003 are interesting. I'm not including 2004 in this comparison because that's not the result we're looking for. :D

    The Hall isn't run by MLB, but they have a rule that players under lifetime bans are ineligible for induction. I don't agree with that rule, but that's what it is.

    I look for them to both make the playoffs, but given how they've been playing lately I think it's more likely the Cubs as division champions and the Brewers as the wildcard. I'll happily take it either way, though.
