  1. 2.5 games out in the division and 2 games out of the Wild Card after Friday's action. There's no stopping the Cubs' momentum!
  2. I agree about the bullpen, yet interestingly relief pitching is actually winning the poll on cubs.com (by a wide margin). People who post on NSBB are much more knowledgeable than people who vote on cubs.com. :D
  3. Lee's already on the roster (suspended players are still on the roster), so nobody will need to be sent down when he returns. And Dempster was already activated before Friday's game (Gallagher was sent down).
  4. This is the current cubs.com poll. We'll see how our responses compare.
  5. Good point. Off to Baseball Discussions.
  6. Or because, by the time the Cubs make the third out, they will have already more than batted around and put the game out of reach. :D
  7. Sounds like the Kyle Farnsworth influence stayed behind even after he was traded. :D
  8. Another case of what should have been, similar to Mike Harkey around the same time. :(
  9. Steve "Lake" Trout he was one of my favorites Rainbow I thought. Rainbow. Remember when Steve Lake would catch Steve Trout? That was funny.... Yes; that's when the Lake Trout references were made.
  10. This is actually an age-old debate which will continue as long as baseball is played. It usually is treated as a most outstanding player award, but given that it's called the Most VALUABLE Player, perhaps it shouldn't be. By definition, most VALUABLE means who made the most difference for their team, not who had the most outstanding individual performance. Given how it usually is looked at perhaps it should be re-named Player of the Year instead of Most Valuable Player.
  11. This morning on ESPN 1000, Silvy said that Wood has lost something like 48 pounds??? I wonder if that could have anything to do with his heart condition and needing to carry less weight to make it easier on his body? That's just a complete guess though. One of the articles linked in this thread says hes lost 48 lbs. What heart condition are you talking about? He has that "hole in the heart" condition. It was diagnosed, I believe, around the time he tore is UCL and had Tommy John in 99. I believe you're right about when it was diagnosed. If I remember correctly it was stated that he'd eventually need surgery to correct it, but not for many years.
  12. I think it's coming pretty close to time you can remove the question mark from doable for 90 wins.
  13. The main difference between this year and 2003 was that in 2003 nobody in the NL Central was in Wild Card contention; it was division title or bust. This year the Cubs have a legitimate chance at either the division title or the Wild Card. It's nice to have more than one route to the playoffs. :)
  14. True, but if they go by the true meaning of "most valuable" rather than "most outstanding" (which admittedly they usually don't) then I think Aram might have a case.
  15. That is true, but I think it also might have something to do with more playing time overall. And perhaps, after the almost-trade, Lou had a pep talk with him and helped restore his confidence. Nothing like the old "hey, we were going to trade you for nobody and pay half your remaining salary, but those jerks wanted us to pay 2/3rds so we told them to stick it" pep talk to restore confidence. :D Or maybe it was more like reading him the riot act: "Nobody wants you the way you're playing now, so if you want to be traded you need to start producing and establishing some value."
  16. I think Jackson belongs for the sole reason that his performance in the Series was too good to suggest that he went through with throwing the Series. He was extremely illiterate and lied to by others, and I think he honestly didn't really know all the facts.
  17. That is true, but I think it also might have something to do with more playing time overall. And perhaps, after the almost-trade, Lou had a pep talk with him and helped restore his confidence.
  18. Lou said he would. Len said that Demp would only be used today in an emergency. If necessary, Howry will close today but Dempster will resume his role tomorrow. Good plan (and of course the insurance the Cubs got in the 8th made it a moot point anyway). If Dempster pitched today that would have been two days in a row and three of the last four, which may have made him unavailable tomorrow.
  19. It may be a blessing in disguise that the trade of Jones to Florida fell through. Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make. Jones producing again (at least for now) and Izzy traded. Eyre may be the only real deadweight remaining, and even he's done better lately when used in a mopup role.
  20. Yes, but that's young compared to 250-year old Julio Franco.
  21. I don't know the rules that well but isn't that one of the reasons for ptbnl, so you can trade guys currently on the dl? I believe that actually came into play in 2003. The Cubs were going to include Bobby Hill as one of the players going to Pittsburgh in the Ramirez trade. However, Hill was on the DL at the time (I think it was minor league DL), so it was worded as a PTBNL when the trade was announced. Hill was then sent to Pittsburgh as the PTBNL once he came off the DL.
  22. Three hits for Ronny. Hopefully that's a sign he's getting it going again. I'd like to see him called back up next week when Lee returns.
  23. Depending on which Braun he's talking about. :D
